1 Pirates Spring Term 2 Year 1 and 2
2 Independence The children will be learning how to access resources and activities by themselves. Communication Over the next half term we will continue to develop our communication skills through initiatives such as R-Time, and show and tell. Self-Belief We will promote self belief by celebrating successes in class and as a whole school and will continue with Star Writers, Star of the Day and Golden Book child. Aspiration We will be aspiring to do our best in all our work and will celebrate successes and look at successes of others. We are looking at the achievements of George Frederick Handel this half term. Perseverance We will provide opportunities for the children to build resilience and perseverance and celebrate successes when children find things difficult but try hard. Curiosity Through a creative curriculum approach we will be looking at famous pirates, exploring plants, and learning about algorithms to promote curiosity in the children. In our R.E topics we also be asking different Wonder Questions
3 Literacy During this half term the children will cover several genres including... Writing a letter - Following a mysterious video from a Captain Sparrow, we will be writing a letter to tell him what a great deck hand we would be on his ship. Poetry We will be using rhyming couplets to write our own pirate poems! Explanation - As part of our science topic, we will be explaining how plants grow. Narrative - We will write our own narratives by learning a pirate story and adapting it using the talk for writing initiative.

Choose and use standard units, read scales and measuring accurately Finding ½ and ¼ of shapes and numbers Geometry Recognise and name 2d and 3d shapes Identify and name properties of 2d and 3d shapes Time I can measure and begin to write down time vocabulary, read time to nearest half hour Tell and write the time to nearest five minutes Statistics Record sorting pictorially Read and make/draw simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and tables

6 Plants Children will be learning to identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. Also they will be able to identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees. The lives of significant individuals in the past, looking at the famous pirates Anne Bonny and Blackbeard. We will be developing our research skills, picking out relevant information about the famous pirates. We will be talking about researching from a range of sources e.g. books, leaflets and the internet. We will also talk about the reliability of a source, and why some information might be different as it is passed down by word of mouth. The children will be learning all about algorithms ( a set of instructions that computers follow) the will be writing their own and beginning to de-bug a simple program.
7 Art will be focused on our Pirates topic! The classes will be learning new textiles skills and be creating pirate flags! They will look at pirate flags, choose their favourite ideas and develop these to design new ideas and create their own using felt. The children will be considering how pirates used colour and shapes on their flags to ensure they have a quality design. They will be taught how to use a needle and thread safely. In PE lessons this half term, the children will be developing their throwing and catching skills. They will use a wide range of equipment including tennis and rugby balls to beanbags and cones. Using their hands as a target when catching will be a key skill. These skills will be applied to Piggy in the Middle and other small-team games which will include an element of competition, team work and fair play.
8 We will be learning how to be great pirates by recognising and naming the seven continents and five oceans. We will be learning about using a key on a map and will be creating our own maps using a key to find a suitable place to bury our treasure Over this half term we will be looking at the SEAL topic Good to be me. The theme is about understanding our feelings as well as considering our strengths and weaknesses as learners. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy. We will also have a focus on Drug Education focusing on using medicines safely and other household substances. This term the children will be using their voices expressively and creatively by singing hymns on a weekly basis in class. The children will also be learning to play a tuned instrument the recorder, and will learn to read three notes. Also, the children will be listening to and learning about the great composer, George Frederick Handel.
9 SMSC Spiritual Our R.E curriculum allows children to explore their own and other beliefs and values and develop an awe and wonder. Moral Over the half term we will be looking at fables and traditional tales as our end of day stories. Two members of each class are part of the school council. Social We carry out peer assessment in all subjects. We make opportunities for each child s voice and use democratic systems within our classes. Cultural We will be looking at past events and exploring how they have affected our culture today. We will also be listening to and appraising music from other cultures.
