ISBN # SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS: CPM website: COURSE DESCRIPTION: Honors Mathematics II is a fast-paced, rigorous formal extension of all of the math courses that students have taken up to this point, particularly Mathematics I. The concepts begin with Chapter 3 of the Math 2 curriculum and are taught in this course with increasing complexity within the following concepts: Probability and Trigonometry, Quadratic Functions, Proofs and Quadratics, Polygons, Circles and Triangles, Functions, Solids, Domain/Range, Law of Sine and Law of Cosines and Transformation of parent graphs and piecewise defined functions. The
2 standards for Mathematical Practice are implemented, applied and practiced throughout all lessons. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Honors Mathematics II is a continued focus on teaching strategies to help students learn and retain mathematics, at a complex level. Students engage in problem-solving lessons, cooperative learning groups and lessons provide practice and procedures repeatedly over time. Key concepts taught include: Extending the properties of exponents to rational exponents & properties of rational and irrational numbers. Perform arithmetic operations with complex numbers, and complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations. Interpret the structure of expressions, write expressions & perform operations on polynomials. Create equations that describe numbers or relationships. Solve equations and inequalities in one variable, & solve systems of equations. Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of context & analyze functions using different representations. Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities and build new functions between existing functions. Construct and compare linear, quadratics and exponential models and solve problems & interpret expressions for functions in terms of the situations they model. Prove and apply trigonometric identities. Prove geometric theorems and theorems about circles. Understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations, prove theorems involving similarity & define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right angles. Translate between geometric description and equation for a conic section, use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically, explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems. Understand independence and conditional probability and use them to interpret data & use rules of probability to compute probabilities of compound events in a uniform probability model. Use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions. Domain and Range in the field of Statistics Law of Sine and Law of Cosines Transformation of parent graphs and piecewise defined functions Assessments of student learning will include proficiency in mathematical understanding, skill proficiency, problem solving, communication, justification, mastery over time, multiple ways of seeing and teamwork. Checkpoints will be monitored regularly throughout the lessons and chapter assessments will be given using the CPM curriculum via individual tests, Team Tests, Participation Quizzes, student presentations, class
