14. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE Programme SpecificationBEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering The standards for higher education awards within Furness are set by reference to the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. Both the delivery and design of the programme are consistent with relevant sections of the Code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in Higher Education, published by the QAA. The content, teaching, learning and assessment strategies and the overall ethos of the programme are aligned with the academic infrastructure, consisting of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (QAA FHEQ) (2008, UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence UK-SPEC) 2010 by the Engineering Council, and QAA Benchmark for Engineering (2010). The programme is accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (The IET). Their requirements are controlled by the UK-SPEC (which in turn informs the QAA benchmark statements). The Technical Engineering Curriculum Area has held a number of employer forums which included local and national employers and STEM ambassadors. The purpose of the forums is to seek advice on the programme streams, pathways, modules and module content. Other discussions within these forums related to skills gaps and transferable skills. BEng modules are assessed in various ways depending upon content. 70% by examination and 30% by coursework for the majority of theoretical subjects Where the content requires a substantial element of practical application assessment will be 50% by examination and 50% by coursework Project modules and practical skill based subjects will be assessed 100% by coursework The module descriptor for each module of the scheme will indicate which strategy is to be used for that module. Where modules are assessed in whole or in part by written coursework assignments, these will normally total approximately 300 words per credit value, though this total may be varied in the module descriptor if appropriate. Where assignments contain substantial elements of calculation, designs, drawings or other no-textural elements, no indicative word counts can be given. These assignments are targeted to involve the student in approximately five hours of assessed coursework for every credit earned. 10

Programme SpecificationBEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering 18. QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND ENHANCEMENT Evaluation and Improvement of Quality Standards Design, review and improvement mechanisms Furness College requires all its programmes, courses and support activities to be subject to rigorous quality assurance procedures. The key strategy of the quality system is that course-teams take responsibility for their work. Also, members of the course team should be responsible for their individual contributions. The process of improving quality requires curriculum teams to: Set and realise targets for retention, achievement and attendance for each course Monitor and review team performance through critical self-assessment Produce an annual self-assessment report Produce a development plan to address any weaknesses identified in the selfassessment report Carry out the actions in the development plan within the timescales specified Participate in the college s observation of teaching and learning programme and in inhouse inspections Keep up-to-date and comprehensive course files (electronic) Organise and attend regular course-team meetings, using a standard agenda, and complete any actions proposed in the timescales specified Undertake appropriate staff development and keep up-to-date with vocational and industrial advances Partake in termly curriculum audits The college s quality system is designed to: Ensure continuous enhancement for each aspect of the student experience Raise achievement Inform college planning Fulfil the requirements of external stakeholders All curriculum team improvement targets and action plans are monitored by the Quality and Standards Unit who report progress to the Senior Management s Quality Improvement Group. Curriculum teams self-assessment reports are integrated into the annual college Self- Assessment report. The self-assessment cycle is part of the college planning cycle and links to Senior Management decision-making and strategic planning. An Annual Report for each partner HEI is also prepared using information sources such as the External s comments, MEQ s, Student Liaison meetings and course review meetings. 13

Programme SpecificationBEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Team Meetings Team meetings are held at least three times per term to consider issues relating to the day to day management of the provision. These meetings involve the academic staff involved in the provision and employer representatives. The University s course consultant(s) are entitled to attend these formal team meetings and to receive minutes of meetings. Module Review Each programme carries out an anonymous student survey for each module taught and for each separate instance of delivery. These surveys are processed by the Quality Unit who create a summary of the findings. These are made available on the college intranet whereby the module leader creates an evaluative report for the module taking into account feedback from the external examiner, student liaison meetings and delivery over the year. This is then passed to the review meeting detailed below. Review Meetings At least once in every delivery year a team made up of academics and, where practicable, employers and/or outside academic representatives meet to evaluate the whole of the provision. The review meeting is provided with copies (in summary where appropriate) of the results, student feedback and evaluative module reports. The programme leader will then produce an overall evaluative report and action plan for consideration by the College and partner HEI. Internal review is ensured by scrutiny of annual reviews by the HE Director and the Quality Group and their submission for approval. Course Audit Review (CAR) Each course is reviewed tri-annually by the Director of HE and reported to the Senior Management Team via the Quality Improvement Group. Such reviews involve thorough analysis of the targets and data relating to the course. Good practice is identified as are courses which are raising concerns, so that remedial action can be taken wherever possible to eliminate the concerns. The CARs provide information for other quality systems, such as self-assessment. It is also an important tool to help course teams plan for the future. The Curriculum Audit Review (CAR) Process: The purpose of CARs is to ensure that a robust curriculum is developed and maintained CARs involve a detailed analysis of enrolment, attendance, retention and achievement of all courses. Key documents such as Teaching and Learning observation grades, EV reports, learners surveys and retention and achievement data feed into the process to ensure rigorous analysis and effective development of curriculum areas CARs take place each term Any course or curriculum area causing concern is flagged up and an agreed action plan is produced to address the concerns Any courses or curriculum areas with outstanding performance are flagged up and staff involved are sent a certificate of excellence Any minor issues are incorporated in an immediate actions report which has actions to be addressed within one week 14

Programme SpecificationBEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering The Quality and Standards Unit follows up immediate actions within 2 weeks and the database is updated accordingly Cause for concern actions are monitored by the Quality and Standards Unit and if a cause for concern fails to improve in a specified timescale, that course may be removed from the curriculum and a succession strategy will be deployed External examiner requirements: External Examiners will advise the Assessment Board on matters of standards and fairness of the assessment process and if necessary offer advice on individual student results. External Examiners will report on whether the standards set are appropriate with reference to external reference points including subject benchmarks, FHEQ, QAA Quality Code and the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). The report shall report on the robustness of assessment procedures and standards of student performance, drawing comparison of those standards with similar programmes. The annual report from the External Examiner feeds into the Annual Review process and the Self-Assessment Report and made available to all students on the programme via the VLE.. Indicators of Quality: Module reviews Annual course review Course Consultant and External Examiner feedback Planned review and revalidation Course review for external verifiers, eg QAA IQER, Accreditation Staff appraisal and action plans Peer teaching observation Quality and Improvement Group Recommendations of Lancaster University Annual report meeting Recommendations from accrediting bodies, ie IET, IMechEng Analysis of module mean, std, distribution of degree classifications Student retention rates Student feedback MEQ s, student liaison meetings, Governor Learner Experience Committee NSS Student Feedback Arrangements: Students views of the college are regarded as essential to the quality assurance process, and questionnaires and focus groups are used to ascertain students opinions of their experiences. Views from students are sought formally twice during the yearof a course via: MEQs (Module Evaluation Questionnaires) at middle and/or end of teaching of module Student Liaison Meetings once per semester Discussions in the Student Liaison Meetings and in group or individual tutorials feed into the course team meetings and the Course Audit Review process. In addition, student feedback is given directly to module lecturers during seminars and informally out of class time. The results of the feedback are discussed at course team meetings and a summary is discussed at the 15

Programme SpecificationBEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering course audit review meeting. This is fed into the Annual review process where lecturers review the module delivery, learning, teaching and assessment processes. The outcomes from this process are fed back into further student liaison meetings and summaries posted on the College VLE.
