1 Dear Parents, February is here again! Our students have been doing a great job this year. Keep up the good work! February brings lots of fun with Groundhog s Day, Valentine s Day, and President s Day. Many classes will have Valentine s activities. Your teacher will soon send home information about Valentine s for your class. But don t let all the fun distract you from school work! This February our students will be learning a lot! In math we will continue learning strategies to solve multiplication and division problems, as well as, revisiting subtraction strategies. Students will read informational texts about animals and habitats as they continue to compare and contrast in reading. We will also integrate previous reading skills on topic, main ideas, and details. Grammar this month will focus on adjectives and comparatives. In writing we will be finishing our opinion writings. Some classes may choose to start research reports. We are also getting ready to prepare for the upcoming PSSA s. These tests will be given April It is important that students are in school for these tests. Please plan appointments and absences around these dates. If you have a pressing reason to miss school, please contact the building secretaries or principals to discuss. You can begin preparing for PSSA s at home now. Encourage your children to get into the habit of getting a good night s sleep with an earlier bedtime. Also have your children eat a good breakfast at home. 3 Mrs. Frank We are doing a great job at collecting minutes for our Million Minute Reading Challenge. Though, our class is not reaching complete participation. Please remind your child to get their reading log turned in with any amount of minutes read that week. I hope to see some of our students get recognized for individual awards. The students had a great time at the snowball dance. Thank you for the parental support and promoting your child to read over the winter break. Continue to study the basic multiplication facts, as it makes it easier to complete multiplication extension problems. If you wish to participate in exchanging valentines, send them in with your child on Friday, Feb. 13 th. I hope that you enjoyed the snow with your child! Please continue to work on math facts with your child at home. Please make sure your child is dressed for the cold weather when they come to school. Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child. 4 Mr. Kaltreider Hello everyone! I hope everyone has recovered from the blizzard last month! I am happy to report that our class continues to be a leader in the Million Minutes Reading Challenge. Most of our students are regularly participating and logging a lot of minutes. Students enjoyed the Snow Ball party that was a reward for Million Minutes. I am also running a contest for students who read 225+ minutes per week. The prize drawing will be at the end of this month. In addition to reading, I also encourage students to log on to their XtraMath website at home to help them learn their math facts. This way they can advance through the levels and earn their certificates faster! We will be having a Valentine s exchange and celebration on February 12. I will soon send a list of names home. Due to having peanut/nut allergies in the room, it is preferable not to send in homemade treats. If you would like to send candy treats, we ask that you check the labels for peanut/nut allergens when selecting your items. Donations needed: Clorox wipes, tissues Mrs. Yaukey Hope everyone enjoyed the snowstorm and the surprise long weekend. It's hard to believe that we have reached the 100th day of school mark- the year is just flying by. Please keep encouraging your child to read at home and also make sure that reading materials are age appropriate. Students are always welcome to sign interesting books out of our classroom library. Please also keep encouraging students to practice their multiplication facts. There are many games, videos, and songs on line that can help master those tricky facts. Salute! and Multiplication Top-It are two games that students have learned that are easy to set up and practice at home with a regular deck of cards. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns! School store: Feb 18 Mr. Yingling I'm glad last week is behind us. Hopefully we can make it through February snow-free! As you can tell from the Home Links that your child has been bringing home for Unit 5, we have been learning several strategies to help solve the multiplication facts. Those strategies are helpful, but they do not guarantee the memorization of the facts. The facts must be practiced in order for them to be automatic. Please help your child practice their facts(fact triangles, flash cards, math websites, etc.) as much as possible. Reading Logs should be turned in the first day of each week. My minimum requirement is 100 minutes read each week. If your child wants to benefit from the rewards of the Million Minute Reading Challenge, they should be reading 125 minutes each week.
