1 Canisteo-Greenwood Middle School Teaching for Learning First Marking Period Newsletter Welcome Welcome to the first newsletter of the school year. It is our goal that through this newsletter you will have a better understanding of what your child is learning and doing in the middle school this year. Our students have made a great transition back to school. Teachers are working hard to ensure all children can be successful. The after school tutoring help is up and running on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays again this year. We are also fortunate enough to have the A3 program back as well. This program provides enrichment opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), they provide an after school snack and homework help. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! 2 CG MS News Mrs. Conklin Middle School Music 7 th Grade ELA Mrs. Thoma The seventh grade has just completed reading A Long Walk to Water. Students were able to contribute their thoughts and ideas to the living bulletin board outside our classroom by adding to a running list of characters, conflicts, settings, interesting words and memorable quotes. This really allowed the students to take ownership of their learning by reflecting on what was truly important throughout the novel and gave way to great discussion amongst students about what should make it to the board. The board also gave the fifth and sixth grades a glimpse of what the seventh grade is working on students were all too willing to share the background of our novel and what was going on with the other grades. A3 After School Program Interested in having your child participate in the after school A3 program? Dave Cook is our A3 coordinator and oversees the program. Nurse s Corner Mrs. Christine Butler, RN Personal Hygiene: Healthy Habits for Life Proper personal hygiene is knowledge most of us take for granted. For kids, learning proper personal hygiene can be a difficult and embarrassing lesson. With a few simple pointers and a little practice, any child can learn the basics of good personal hygiene and save themselves from the dreaded class laughter. Teaching children personal hygiene should cover six areas. These areas are: smelling clean, clean clothing, clean hair, clean teeth, and perfumes and colognes. No child ever wanted to be taunted for smelling stinky. As puberty approaches, a child will not only mature physically in ways others can see, but personally as well. These personal changes include maturation of sweat glands under the arms and personal places. Talking with your child about these changes before they happen will help ease the shock of odor and wetness when puberty occurs. Along with clean skin, children will need to learn about clean clothing. Changing clothing often, especially undergarments, is important, especially during puberty and after. Underclothing often collects dead skin cells, sweat and other personal excretions which increase the need for personal changes.

5 Counseling Corner Mrs. Paula Quanz, Middle School Counselor Ext We celebrated Red Ribbon week in the Middle School October Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. This week is an opportunity to present alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention awareness to our students. Each homeroom was given a drug free theme and decorated their doors accordingly. It was exciting to see the creativity in all of the different designs. Mrs. Robbins homeroom was awarded the prize for the best display. They celebrated with a special treat. Students also heard messages through their Concern for Youth presentations and each day drug facts were read during morning announcements. Parent teacher conferences will be held November 20 th. If you would like a conference with your child s teachers please contact me at Ext Remember the use of the parent portal is also an excellent way to stay up to date on your child s academic progress. A link for the parent portal is on the main page of the school website; Some tips to help make your conference successful: This is time for an information exchange. The more the teacher knows about your child, the better your child s needs will be addressed. Start with a positive attitude; you and the teachers should function as a team. Come prepared with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child s progress. If you are uncomfortable attending alone, bring someone along to support you. Please be prompt to your appointment and stay within the assigned time. Reinforcement of school work at home makes a big difference in your child s understanding, motivation, and school performance. Our goal was to promote Just Say NO to Drugs. Lisa Oliver from the Hornell Area Concern for Youth had red ribbon cards for students to sign to pledge to be drug free.
