3 English Language Curriculum time: 9 hours per two week cycle Exam Board: Eduqas GCSE th Century literature reading study and creative prose writing: The source for the reading questions will be a literature fiction text. It will be drawn from the 20th century. Its genre will be prose fiction. As a stimulus for students own writing, there will be a choice of scenario, written prompt or visual image that is related to the topic of the reading text in section A th and 21 st century non-fiction reading study and transactional/persuasive writing: Structured questions will assess the reading of two unseen non-fiction texts, one from the 19 th, the other from the 21 st century. Transactional, persuasive and/or discursive writing will be assess through two tasks. 3. Non-exam assessment: The aim of the assessment is to allow students to demonstrate their speaking and listening skills by: giving a presentation in a formal context responding appropriately to questions and to feedback, asking questions themselves to elicit clarification using spoken Standard English Paper 1: 20 th Century literature reading study and creative prose writing Section A: Reading - One literature fiction text Section B: Writing Writing to narrate/recount Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of GCSE Paper 2: 19 th and 21 st century non-fiction reading study and transactional/persuasive writing Section A: Reading one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text Section B: Writing writing to present a viewpoint Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of GCSE Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language Set by teacher throughout course, marked by teacher, moderated by exam board and receives a separate grade. 2
4 English Literature Curriculum time: taught alongside English Language Exam Board: Eduqas GCSE 1. Shakespeare and Poetry: Students will study one play from the list of six set texts. Students will also study an anthology of poetry. 2. Post 1914 Prose/Drama, 19 th century prose and unseen poetry: students will study one from a choice of 12 set texts, which include post-1914 prose fiction and drama. Students will also study unseen poetry and one novel from the list of seven set texts. Paper 1: Shakespeare and Poetry: Section A: Shakespeare: students will answer one question on the play they have studied. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from the play and then to write about the play as a whole. Section B: Poetry: students will answer one comparative question on one named poem printed on the paper and one other poem from their chosen anthology cluster. Written exam, 2 hours, 64 marks, 40% of GCSE Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry: Section A: Modern texts: students will answer one essay question from a choice of two on their studied modern prose or drama text. Section B: The 19th-century novel: students will answer one question on they have studied. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from the novel and then to write about the novel as a whole Section B: Poetry: students will answer one comparative question on one named poem printed on the paper and one other poem from their chosen anthology cluster. Section C: Unseen poetry: Students will answer one question on one unseen poem and one question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem. Written exam, 2 hours 30 minutes, 96 marks, 60% of GCSE 3
5 Mathematics Curriculum time: 8 taught hours per fortnight Exam Board: Edexcel GCSE The GCSE has two tiers of entry: Higher (9-4) and Foundation (5-1). There are no controlled assessments (coursework). Content includes: Foundation Number 25% Ratio, proportion and rates of change 25% Geometry and measures 15% Statistics and probability 15% Algebra 20% Higher Number 15% Ratio, proportion and rates of change 20% Geometry and measures 20% Statistics and probability 15% Algebra 30% This is a 2 year linear course leading to a single GCSE qualification. For each tier there will be 3 x 1hour 30 minute exams. Paper 1 is non-calculator, paper 2 and 3 are calculator. Each paper is out of 80 marks and is worth 33.3% off the total GCSE. Respect All students will continue to study RESPECT once a cycle throughout year 10. Respect is delivered by the form tutor and will not be examined and does not lead to a qualification. However, RESPECT covers a wide range of topical issues which support students personal development and wellbeing. Statutory themes such as Sex and Relationships Education, Careers and Citizenship are a major part of the Key Stage 4 RESPECT programme. 4
6 GCSE Combined Science Trilogy (2 GCSEs) Curriculum Time: 10 taught hours per fortnight Exam Board: AQA Biology - Cell Biology; Organisation; Infection and response; Bioenergetics; Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; Ecology. Chemistry - Atomic structure and the periodic table; Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter; Quantitative chemistry; Chemical changes; and Energy changes. The rate and extent of chemical change; Organic chemistry; Chemical analysis; Chemistry of the atmosphere; Using resources. Physics - Energy; Electricity; Particle model of matter; Atomic structure. Forces; Waves; Magnetism and electromagnetism Assessment There are six written exam papers each lasting 75 minutes to be taken at the end of Year 11: two biology, two chemistry and two physics. Each of the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas. Core PE Curriculum time: 2 taught hours per fortnight All students will take Core PE and will have two hours of PE over a fortnight. Core PE is not an examined subject and will not lead to a qualification. : You will experience many different activities which will focus on; how to acquire skill, how to evaluate each other, how to prepare for physical activity, and the benefits of physical activity to help lead a healthy lifestyle. 5
7 Art and Design Exam Board: AQA GSCE The course is divided into two units:- Unit 1 Portfolio of coursework, which includes 3 projects, produced over two years of study. This is worth 60% of the GCSE. Unit 2 Externally set task. This ends with 10 hours of supervised focussed study over the course of two weeks. Exam papers are issued prior to the set task with ample time given to prepare. Students will be marked on the following areas: developing ideas, refining ideas through experimentation, recording ideas and presenting a meaningful response to a given brief. Unit 1: Portfolio of coursework 60% Unit 2: Externally set task 40% Business Studies Exam Board: Edexcel GCSE Unit 1 - Introduction to Small Business What makes someone a successful business person, how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business. Unit 2 - Investigating Small Business Controlled assessment task: Independent research in and outside of lessons and write up. Unit 3 - Building a Business How to make a business stand out in a competitive marketplace. Financial decision-making and the complexity of dealing with staff. Environmental, social and ethical issues. The qualification will be assessed in two equally weighted exam papers. There is no coursework. Paper 1 - Theme 1: Investigating small Paper 2 - Theme 2: Building a business business Each written exam: 90 minutes, 90 marks Each exam is 50% of the total GCSE Multiple choice, calculation, short-answer and extended-writing questions There are three sections in the paper. Each section is ramped, starting with multiple choice questions, moving to short answer questions and ending with extended writing. Sections B and C are based on real life, relevant business contexts and examples. 6
8 Construction Exam Board: Edexcel BTEC Why Choose BTEC Construction? Construction is a major employment sector. It offers a diverse range of employment opportunities and a lifetime of job satisfaction and variety The course covers building design, building technologies, carpentry, and bricklaying. Students will learn practical trade based skills, such as bricklaying and carpentry, problem solving and communication skills and technical drawing skills : 25% externally assessed written exam and 75% internally assessed assignments with practical and written elements. The course is 40% practical and 60% theory. Drama Exam Board: OCR GCSE Students will be encouraged to re-examine the world through kinaesthetic learning. Working in groups and using teamwork to show compelling and convincing drama pieces. Students will also work individually on monologues and other individual tasks. The course also introduces students to the basic non-acting skills necessary to produce a convincing performance. Devising Drama. Practical 30% Students will create their own devised performance based on a chosen stimuli from the exam board. Students will also be marked on an accompanying portfolio with evidence of the process and decisions made whilst creating and developing their performance. Presenting and Performing Texts. Practical 30% Students demonstrate their skills in a live performance, performing or designing two performances from one text. Students have to produce a document which explains their intentions for and approach to the performance. Drama: Performance and Response Written 40% Students study text and performance. Section A. One performance text in detail from a set list. Section B. Analyse and evaluate a live theatre performance. 7
9 Hospitality and Catering Exam Board: WJEC The course develops knowledge and understanding of hospitality and catering. Food preparation skills as well as nutrition, team building and organisation skills. Unit 1: The hospitality and catering industry. (40%) Unit 2: Hospitality and catering in action: panning and preparing two dishes in four hours. (60%) Written examination 1 hour 30 minutes 40% Coursework 60% Practical based coursework. Research a topic associated with the brief and cook two dishes to go with the brief. Geography Exam Board: Edexcel GCSE Over the course of the two years you will cover three units including: Component 1: Global Geographical Issues: hazardous earth, development dynamics and challenges of an urbanising world. Component 2: UK Geographical Issues: the UK s evolving human and physical landscapes and two geographical investigations. Component 3: People and Environment Issues: people and the biosphere, forests under threat, consuming energy resources. These are to provide you with a solid foundation in physical geography to enable you to fully appreciate the physical work in which we live. Component 1 and 2-1 hour 30 minute examinations (both 37.5%) Component 3-1 hour 30 minutes examination (25%) 8
10 History Exam Board: OCR GCSE 1. The People s Health A study that mainly focuses on how living conditions, responses to epidemics and the role of government in Public Health have changed over time. 2. The Making of America An in depth study of the history of the USA in the 1800s 3. The Norman Conquest A study of how the Norman period has been represented in various historical sources representations. 4. Living Under Nazi Rule Students learn about how the Nazis were able to establish a dictatorship in Germany. Their use of propaganda and terror The Hitler youth Nazi occupied Europe The Holocaust History around us? 5. History around us There are three written exams at the end of year 11. The exams include essay style answers so a good writing technique is useful. Paper 1 30% 1 hour 45 minutes Paper 2 40% 1 hour 45 minutes Paper 3 30% 1 hour 9
11 ICT Exam Board: OCR Cambridge Nationals Students will learn about tools and techniques for use in different digital hardware and software technologies, and how these can be integrated to manage and communicate data and information. They will also be taught what data and information are and the legal, ethical and moral considerations when using technology to gather, store and present data and information, and how to mitigate the risks of cyber-attacks. Assessment Unit R012 - Understanding tools, techniques, methods and processes for technological solutions Learners will sit an exam to assess their knowledge and understanding of different technologies (hardware and software applications), and tools and techniques used to select, store, manipulate and present data and information Assessment Unit R013 Developing technological solutions This assessment focuses on how effectively learners use their skills when developing a technological solution. They will be given a project to develop a technological solution that processes data and communicates information. How you will assessed There are two units of assessment. Learners must complete both units of assessment to achieve the qualification. 1. Assessment Unit R012 is assessed by an exam and marked by the exam board (1 hour 45 minutes). Exams will be in January and June 2. Assessment Unit R013 is marked by your class teacher and then moderated by the exam board 10
12 Media Studies Exam Board: WJEC/Eduqas GCSE You will complete one controlled assessment which will consist of a statement of intent, planning and the production itself. In addition to this you will sit two examinations where you will think about investigating in the media industry and planning in the industry. What to expect in lessons You will: Study the manner in which the media is controlled and distributed. Develop investigative, critical thinking and decision-making skills through consideration of important issues that are relevant to your everyday life and the world in which you live; Develop your appreciation and understanding of the media and its role in your daily life; Enjoy developing and using your practical and creative skills using IT and digital equipment; Understand how to use media terms and ideas to explore media production in its many forms. Study media theories and apply them to pre-existing media form. Unit 1: Two written exams 1 hour 30 minutes: response to material chosen by the exam board; demonstrating planning and creative skills. This is taken in Year 11 equals 70% of the final grade. Unit 2: One controlled assessment: Practical production and evaluation. This accounts for 30% of the final grade. 11
13 Music Exam Board: Eduqas GCSE The Eduqas specification encourages an integrated approach to the three distinct disciplines of performing, composing and appraising through four areas of study. These are designed to develop knowledge and understanding of music through the study of a variety of genres and styles in a wider context. The Western Classical Tradition forms the basis of Musical Forms and Devices (area of study 1), and learners should take the opportunity to explore these forms and devices further in the other three areas of study. Music for Ensemble (area of study 2) allows learners to look more closely at texture and sonority. Film Music (area of study 3) and Popular Music (area of study 4) provide an opportunity to look at contrasting styles and genres of music. Knowledge and understanding of each area of study is assessed explicitly in the listening exam of Component 3 (see below). Learners may choose the same or different areas of study for Components 1 and 2 (see below), and will also have the opportunity to follow their own musical interests in composition and performance. Component 1: Performing (internally assessed coursework, 30% of qualification). A minimum of two pieces, one of which must be an ensemble performance of at least one minute duration. The other piece(s) may be either solo and/or ensemble. One of the pieces performed must link to an area of study of the learner s choice. These are recorded during Year 11. Component 2: Composing (internally assessed, coursework, 30% of qualification). Two compositions, one of which must be in response to a brief set by Eduqas. Learners will choose one brief from a choice of four, each one linked to a different area of study. The second composition is a free composition for which learners set their own brief. Learners will begin a composition in an appropriate style to each area of study and choose to extend one of them into a full piece of music for the free brief towards the end of Year 10. Component 3: Appraising (listening examination, 40% of qualification) This component is assessed via a listening examination. Eight questions in total, two on each of the four areas of study. Area of study 1: Musical Forms and Devices Area of study 2: Music for Ensemble Area of study 3: Film Music Area of study 4: Popular Music Two of the eight questions are based on extracts set by Eduqas. 12
14 Physical Education Exam Board: Edexcel GCSE You will learn all about exercise and health and the effects of training on the body systems. You will also develop 3 sports or activities. The range of activities which can count towards your GCSE is wide (over 30 activities) and can include activities which you take part in outside of school. You will develop your knowledge of skills and tactics, how to identify faults and make suggestions for improvement. Unit 1: written exam at the end of year 11 focusing on the theory of Physical Education - 60% Unit 2: 30% practical based on 3 sports/ activities, 10% based on analysing performance. 13
15 Design and Technology Product Design.. Exam Board: AQA GCSE GCSE Design and Technology will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Student will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise. Our GCSE allow students to study core technical and designing and making principles, including a broad range of design processes, materials, techniques and equipment. They will also have the opportunity to study specialist technical principles in greater depth. What to expect in lessons Students must be ambitious and open to explore and take design risks in order to stretch the development of design proposals, avoiding clichéd or stereotypical responses. Students will need to demonstrate a reasonable level of literacy, good understanding of design concepts as well as knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques. Students must demonstrate safe working practices in design and technology. How will you be assessed? 50% will be through a two hour written examination at the end of year % will be through completion of controlled assessment. This assessment will take approximately 30 hours and must be carried out under supervision. Students will be given a design task which they must research, design, plan, prototype and manufacture. Separate Science (GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics) Curriculum Time: 5 taught hours per fortnight Exam Board: AQA You will study each science subject in greater depth and will have an extra 5 lessons per fortnight. 14
16 Spanish Exam Board: AQA GCSE What will you study? The course builds on the skills you have learnt and continues to focus on the four skill areas of Listening. Speaking. Reading. Writing. What to expect in lessons The course aims to: Be an enjoyable learning experience. Equip you with communication skills which will allow you to function in everyday situations. Give you language-learning skills which will allow you to apply this knowledge to different contexts and different languages. How will it be assessed? All four skill areas are examined through an exam at the end of the course in year 11 and are worth 25% each of the final marks.
