FOR LEADERS ONLY GRADES K 5 DECEMBER 2017 THE BIG GIVE: THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GENEROSITY AND GOD S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD S BIG STORY GENEROSITY IS A RESPONSE TO THE CHARACTER OF GOD. WEEK 1 We start our look at generosity in 1 John 4:9-11 where we discover that generosity starts with God. Because God loved us so much, He sent Jesus to be our savior and make it possible for us to be with God forever. Bottom Line: Because God gave, I can give. John goes on in this passage and writes, Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we should also love one another, (NIrV). As kids respond to God s generosity in their own life, we pray they will be generous with their family, friends, and neighbors. WEEK 2 In Luke 12:13-21, we find Jesus sharing a parable about a rich young man. This rich man experienced such a harvest that he ended up with more than he needed. Instead of seeing how he could use the extra to help others, he stores it up for himself. He loses his life and doesn t get to enjoy it anyway. Bottom Line: Don t miss your chance to give. When it comes to what we have, we need to think about others and focus on relationships more than getting more stuff. Being generous is difficult when we re consumed with wanting more. We want kids to understand that when we focus on others, we re more likely to see the needs around us and be generous in how we help meet those needs. WEEK 3 We will take a look at important generosity principle Paul wrote to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:18. Command the rich to do good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. They must be willing to share, (NIrV). Paul knows that our wealth isn t based in how much we have but in what we do with it. Bottom Line: Look for creative ways to give. As we have gifts and giving on our minds, Christmas is a natural time to talk to kids about generosity. Often, they feel like they don t have anything to give. Thankfully, all of us can be rich in good deeds. We ll help kids discover how they can look around and discover all sorts of ways they can give to others with their time and talents. WEEK 4 It s Christmas! We head to the familiar story in Luke 2:1-18. While people expected a new king born in a palace, God had other plans in mind. Jesus was born in a place where they kept the animals. No royal robes, not much public fanfare, just Mary and Joseph cuddling Jesus for the first time. God announced His gift to shepherds helping us realize that Jesus was a gift for everyone. Bottom Line: God gave us Jesus. Kids will get the chance to celebrate Jesus, God s most generous gift. They ll discover why God sent Jesus for us, as well as, what that means for how they show generosity to the people in their life The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 1
FOR LEADERS ONLY GRADES K 5 DECEMBER 2017 THE BIG GIVE: THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX WEEK 5 We wrap up Christmas week in Matthew 2:1-12, and find wise men traveling from the East to show generosity to a newborn king. After discovering a unique star in the sky, they followed it and it led them to the home of Jesus. Each one of their gifts for Him were thoughtfully chosen and fit for a king. Bottom Line: Give like you re giving to God. While Christmas is a time to think about giving big, we want kids to realize that they can give big all throughout the year. As we focus on the people God has put in our lives, we ll soon notice how we can be generous towards them. When we show big generosity, we give like we re giving to God The rethink Group. Supervise students This week s story: God gave us Jesus 1 John 4:9-11 SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 30 minutes 1. Veggie Name Game (Relational Activity 5 minutes) Supplies: None Ask students to each choose a vegetable that begins with the first letter in their name. Choose one for yourself as well. The vegetables will now be everyone s new name, so make sure there are no duplicates. Play the Veggie Name Game : o Say your veggie name twice then say the veggie name of another player twice. For example, Zucchini, Zucchini; Broccoli, Broccoli. o Broccoli continues by saying his or her name twice then choosing someone else. For example: Broccoli, Broccoli ; Potato, Potato.
2. Small Group Questions (Discussion Activity 10 minutes) ESTABLISH your GOAL to talk about GENEROSITY. (If your group gets off track, remind them of the goal of the day) Ask a FEW of these questions to check for understanding on the Bible Story and the Bottom Line. When your group becomes restless from the questions, then end in prayer and continue with the other activities. Who is the most generous person you know? Why does that person stand out in your mind? If it s easy to give something away, is it an act of generosity or are you simply getting rid of stuff you don t want? If someone asked you what the secret to generosity is, what would you tell that person? What is the most fun part about giving to others? Why is generosity such a big deal? Why is it important? What s one thing you can do this week to take a step toward being generous the way Jesus is? 3. Take a Snapshot (Application Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Gift Cards Activity Page, pens, tape, permanent marker, hat Give each of the students a pen and a gift card. Ask them to write on the tag one thing they re really hoping to receive for Christmas. Collect the cards that kids filled out and then mix them in with the pre-printed Gift Cards in a hat Let the students take turns picking up a Gift Card from the hat, reading it, and then discussing with the group how easy or hard it would be for them to be give away that item. Remind students there are no right or wrong answers; we all can feel differently about different things. When all the cards have been read and time permits, arrange them from easiest to hardest to give away. When all the cards have been arranged, discuss with students: o Why are some things harder to be generous with than others? o Point to one of the Gift Cards. Who do you know (not yourself!) that would benefit by receiving this gift? o Out of all the things on the Gift Cards, what would you say is the hardest thing for you to share? What s the easiest? Why? AFTER CLASS 2017 Orange. All rights reserved. Adapted with permission by Kyle Dyck, Elementary Program Leader at Cornerstone Fellowship, Livermore, CA. kyled@cornerstoneweb.org

OVERVIEW Don t miss your chance to give Week 2 Generosity December 9 th -10 th, th -5 th Bible Story: Parable of the rich man Luke 12:13-21 Bottom Line: Don t miss your chance to give. Memory Verse: Command the rich to do what is good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. LARGE GROUP Purpose: Large group environment is for learning about God s Word and worshipping God through music minutes. 1. Engage with the story and worship. Supervise students This week s story: Parable of the rich man Luke 12:13-21 SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 30 minutes 1. Toilet Paper Cash (Relational Activity 5 minutes) Supplies: Toilet paper Pass the toilet paper around and ask them to share their name and let each student choose a length to pull off, within reason. Next, ask them to count the sections. Tell them that each section is worth $100 dollars. Let them tally up how rich they are and then take turns sharing what they would do with their money. If time permits, Ask: Define what you think it means to be wealthy. Do you think it s possible for someone to be too rich? If yes, when would that be true? If no, why not? 2. Small Group Questions (Discussion Activity 10 minutes)
ESTABLISH your GOAL to talk about GENEROSITY. (If your group gets off track, remind them of the goal of the day) Ask a FEW of these questions to check for understanding on the Bible Story and the Bottom Line. When your group becomes restless from the questions, then end in prayer and continue with the other activities. In the Parable of the Rich Man, Jesus said, Watch out! Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has. (Luke 12:15 NIrV) o How do we watch out when it comes to money and possessions? If life isn t made up of how much a person has, what is it made up of? Is it wrong to have a lot of stuff? Why or why not? Why is it important to give to others? What are some reasons why we might miss our chance to give? Name some dangers that come with having a lot of money, possessions, or success. Name some benefits that come with being generous not just at Christmas but all the time. 3. Make it Personal with Prayer (Prayer Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Blank Ornament, Pencils Ask your group if they ve made a Wish List of things they wanted for Christmas. If so, let them share some of the gifts they ve asked for and received. Give everyone a pencil and one of the Plain Ornaments. Tell them to imagine that God has a Wish List of ways He d like them to show generosity this week. o What might be on His list? o Let them write it on one side of their ornament then put their names on the back. Use markers to color the ornament if desired/needed. When finished, come together for prayer. o If you think your students would be comfortable enough doing this, pair them up and let them pray for each other to not miss their chance to give this week. AFTER CLASS 1. Set room up for next class (Clean up and set stations) am class, please clean up stations, place in bins and bring supplies to the collection bin at the CF Kids Desk. 3. 10 Look for Creative ways to give Week 3 Generosity December 16 th -17 th, th -5 th OVERVIEW Bible Story: Be rich principle 1 Timothy 6:18 Bottom Line: Look for creative ways to give. Memory Verse: Command the rich to do what is good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. They must be willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18, NIrV Life App: Generosity Making someone s day by giving something away BEFORE CLASS 1. LARGE GROUP Purpose: Large group environment is for learning about God s Word and worshipping God through music minutes. 1. Engage with the story and worship. Supervise students This week s story: Be rich principle 1 Timothy 6:18 SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 30 minutes 1. How would you use it? (Relational Activity 5 minutes) Supplies: None Explain the theoretical situation. They were walking home from school when they randomly looked towards the ground and found a $20 dollar bill with nobody around. They took the time to find the owner of the money but there was no luck in finding them. You were told that you can keep the $20 dollar bill. Explain that your group is going to brainstorm how they can be creative and best use the $20 dollar bill based on the theme of generosity for the month. Either have the students take turns sharing their ideas or spend the 5 minutes trying to build off of each others ideas.
Would you rather be rich or poor? Why? If you don t have money, how can you be generous? What advice would you give someone who doesn t have any money to spend on Christmas gifts but wants to do something special for his or her family and friends? What gets in the way of generosity? Agree or Disagree: It s much easier for a rich person to be generous than it is for someone who is poor. Why? From God s perspective, what makes a person rich? 3. Verse to take with you (Memory Verse Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Bibles, paper, markers, tape Remind your group that generosity is an action; we must DO something for generosity to happen. It starts by seeing a need and then GIVING or DOING something to help meet that need. Pair up your students and give partners a Bible, sheet of paper, tape, and a few markers. Tell them to find and read 1 John 3: Give them a few minutes to discuss with their partners what they think the verses mean in terms of giving and being generous. They can write their thoughts on one side of the paper. Based on what they learned from 1 John 3:17-18, ask them to come up with a creative way to put that verse into action then illustrate their idea by drawing it on the other side of the paper. They must follow these two rules: 1. The act of generosity shown in their picture cannot involve money or possessions. (In other words, it must be in the form of giving time, talents, or energy.) 2. They must draw the picture with something other than their hands. (They can put the markers in their mouths, between their toes, use their elbows, or whatever creative manner they come up with.) When finished, invite each team to share their papers with the others (and decipher the drawings for them!) and explain what they learned from 1 John 3: AFTER CLASS 1. Favorites in a hat (Relational Activity 5 minutes) Supplies: Sticky notes, pencils, timer, hat Hand out one sticky note and pencil to each kid. Explain that they are going to write down their favorite part of Christmas day on the sticky note, fold it up and put it in the hat. They have until the end of the timer to put their sticky note into the hat. (1 minute timer) Once everyone has put their sticky note in the hat, shuffle it up and pull one out. Read it aloud and see if the group can guess who wrote that answer.
What is a gift? What is necessary in order to consider something a gift? Why do we give gifts at all? Imagine Jesus had been born this year. What kind of gifts do you think we would bring Him today? How does being generous show God s love to others? (You could revisit the gifts from the Take A Snapshot Activity and ask how each gift could potentially show God s love.) How can you be more generous in the New Year, not just with giving physical gifts but also with your time and abilities? 3. Bible Story Extension (Bible Story Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Bible, Classic stick note pad, colored sticky note pad, pencils Give each student a bunch of classic sticky notes. Ask students to write down one fact (something true that really happened) from the Bible story they heard in Large Group. (One fact per sticky note.) Challenge the group to collectively come up with 18 distinct facts about the story. Let kids share their fact with the group and work together to place the facts in chronological order, creating a timeline on the floor, on a table, or wherever else makes sense for your environment. Read the story from the Bible, Matthew 2:1-12. o Ask if any facts from the story are missing from the timeline. If necessary, pause the reading and create additional sticky notes to fill in the gaps in the timeline. o Encourage kids to listen to the reading with an inquisitive attitude. (You may need to explain that inquisitive basically just means to be curious.) o Hand out the colored sticky notes for students to write down a question or two if those questions arise while you re reading. Ask: As you listened to the story, is there something you wonder about that wasn t mentioned? AFTER CLASS 1. Set room up for next class (Clean up and set stations) am class, please clean up stations, place in bins and bring supplies to the collection bin at the CF Kids Desk. 3.
