We have dedicated educators who consistently guide our students towards academic excellence. PLE school s intermediate scholars are working extremely hard on Reflex Math and I- Ready to help increase their proficiency levels. With this being said, you can help your child by setting the expectation for them to complete at least 45 minutes of I- Ready each night and play a few math games on Reflex Math as well. Together, we will ensure our teachers dedication and our students determination show great results on the FSA assessments in the spring. This month we have a host of activities scheduled to celebrate our students! Be sure to join us for our 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade honor roll assemblies, Math Night, and our ELL Game Night. Celebrate with us and learn different strategies you can use to increase your ability to help students experience success both at home and in school. 2 KINDERGARTEN Happy October! By now, homework has gone out and is in full swing! Updated homework folders go out the first day of the week (Monday) and are to be returned the last day of the week we are in school (Friday). I-ready and FLKRS testing continues as we reach the end of the month, setting a foundation for the teachers to continue teaching according to each students need. Field trip information will be going home soon, as we have a fun event planned for each quarter! As always, if you have any questions, please contact your child s teacher! THIRD GRADE Happy Thanksgiving!!! Third Grade has so much to be thankful for!!! This month third grade has our first field trip scheduled to Parker Playhouse to see The Little Monster Tales. Please note for future reference if you need help with online payments you are welcome to come out to the school. In other news, over the next few weeks in math students will learn how division is related to subtraction, and how multiplication and division are inverse operations. Please have the students study their multiplication facts on a daily basis to build fluency. In reading they will learn how use text features to locate information relevant to a given topic. You can have them read nonfiction text and explain how specific aspects of text features (title, headings, bold print, charts, maps, etc.) contribute to what is conveyed by the words in the story. Please ensure that you are checking your child s agenda on a daily basis. We are moving Full Stream Ahead and with your continued support we are sure the Destination is: SUCCESS!!! Have a healthy and happy holiday! FIRST GRADE As we are entering into November, we have so many things to be grateful for. First grade is retelling and working on reading comprehension. We are very proud that we have begun LLI in all of our classrooms, a program that we saw a tremendous amount of growth last year, to ensure students are reading on grade level and having the skills they need to be successful. We are also beginning to have a stronger foundation in math. We can now add and subtract within ten. We are building on our skills and will be subtracting within 20 by the end of the month. We are also growing as writers and have published stories to read. Lots of growing and learning continue to happen. We are thankful for all of our great students! FOURTH GRADE Our fourth graders are working hard this year. In Mathematics, our students are practicing strategies to solve division problems. They are also working on multi-step mathematical problems and learning to explain the reasoning behind it. Continue to practice with them nightly. In Reading, students are immersed in mythology as we cover the meaning of unknown words and phrases. We are also reviewing poems, drama and prose. Students should be able to compose thoughtful written responses using evidence from the text. They are learning the RACES (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain and Elaborate, and Sum it up) strategy along the way. In Science, we are getting ready to learn about Rocks and Minerals. Students will enjoy the hands on experience that will take place. In Writing, we are working on Informative writing. Our students are learning to write a proper introduction to an essay and learning how to use evidence for the text to help. SECOND GRADE Wow! It s hard to believe that it s almost December! Thank you for working to ensure that your child is completing their homework neatly and carefully. We have been really encouraged, as have the students, by the progress they are making in learning their math facts. They should be able to add and subtract fluently within 20, without struggling. Please practice by logging on to Reflex Math each night. Students can also use flash cards each night to practice their math facts. Reading We have officially begun Intervention Groups, which involves specific instruction based on the needs of the student. We are monitoring their progress and making adjustments. FIFTH GRADE 5 th grade is continuing working hard ensuring students are proficient in standards starting with ELA where we are moving to informational text and focusing in on analyzing multiple accounts of the same event as well as comparing and contrasting the overall structure of a text. In Math we are finishing up our review of division and then reviewing all the skills that will be covered on our upcoming school city math challenge. In Science our students are showing progress starting with our first school city Science challenge where students demonstrated proficiency in all classes. We will continue on down this path because we know all students can be successful with the right tools. Our first field trip will be on December 8 th, for a low cost of $3. Please make your child s payment online before the due date and return the signed permission slip to your child s teacher. As always thank you for your continued supportj

3 Financial Partner Group & Park Lakes Elementary School are Partners in Education Park Lakes has teamed up with Financial Partner Group to launch the CASH IN A FLASH program, where we donate $1, 000 for every 10 families who process their income tax return with them. They are also extending a contest goal for each class. This means, for every class that reaches 10 or more parents who process their income tax return, will receive a sponsored Pizza Party for the class and an ACE gift card for the Teacher to show our appreciation. Soon you will be able to view the SIP by accessing Park Lakes Elementary s school website. If you have any questions, you may contact Park Lakes Elementary at and ask for Mr. Holligan. Park Lakes is a uniform school. The expectation is that all students wear their uniforms everyday unless they are participating in in Spirit Day (2 nd Friday of each Month). School Uniform Colors Boys: Shirts/Polo Shirts - Navy Blue, Light Blue, or White Pants - Navy Blue or Khaki Girls: Shirts/Polo Shirts - Navy Blue, Light Blue, or White Dresses/Jumpers/Skirts/Pants/Shorts - Navy Blue or Khaki Students may also wear official Park Lakes School T-shirts. Jeans are never apart of the uniform. Parents, please be advised that all visits to the school during the hours of operation require photo identification. Also, for nighttime events please use the back entrance of the school, which you can access via NW 41 st street. Parents of all car riders and walkers are reminded that the bell rings at 8:25a.m; learning begins promptly at 8:35a.m. The parent loop must be used to drop off all students until 8:45a.m. After 8:45a.m, late arrivals must enter through the front entrance and be signed in by a parent. Your cooperation with these procedures is greatly appreciated. The School Advisory Council plays a critical role in shaping and forming the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Please attend and have your voice be heard. PTA Parent/Teacher Advisory The organization's goals may vary from organization to organization, but essentially the goals include volunteerism of parents and teacher encouragement. ***Important Reminders*** Students should not be dropped off prior to 7:45 a.m. Supervision begins at 7:45 a.m. Breakfast is served from 7:45 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. Students should be picked up no later than 4:00 p.m. Any changes in dismissal must be made in writing. Update emergency cards when address and/or phone number changes. ATTENDANCE REMINDER: IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT FROM SCHOOL, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CALL THE ATTENDANCE LINE. 5 Creative Hands The students in this club will work with the art teacher to learn about different art techniques. Their works are presented in county contest, demonstrated in the hallways of the school. Students will be exposed to 3D art, space, technology and engineering. Dance The students in this club will promote school spirit among our Eagles. Dance will include elements of hip-hop, ballet and jazz dancing and lessons. Students will perform at school and community events. Drama/ Little Sprouts Garden Club (1 st 2 nd ) Morning Club Only The students in this club will participate in all aspects of sustainable gardening from planning and planting to harvesting and eat! Students will also participate in all aspects performance. Get Fit Park Lakes Elementary is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to be healthy through physical activity. Students will learn about running, basketball, football and other sports. We are committed to the health and well being of mind, body and spirit. Go Green The students in this club will be provided with an opportunity to be a community contributor as they collect-recycled materials throughout the school, and promote an awareness for the environment. ILEAD The students in this club will focus on the needs of fourth and fifth grade boys. The boys will sharpen their leadership skills and craftsmen ship. The boys will discuss topics that concern issue personal to them as well as the community. There are field trips, which are designed to strengthen their knowledge concerning topic, which gently impact males. PEACE Club Park Lakes Peace Club is open to students who are willing to increase kindness, respect, acceptance and harmony on our school campus and in the community. The students learn peacemaking strategies and positive leadership skills. P.I.N.K. Positive Influence Nurtures Knowledge (4 th and 5 th) The students in this club will be introduced to community mentors, provide opportunity to service in the community as well as on the school campus. This mentoring program enhances their interpersonal skills in the areas of communication, self-esteem and home life success. At the end of each year it is our hope that the students will have developed stronger personal, social and academic skills. Singing Eagles The students in this club will be provided an opportunity for fourth and fifth grade students to develop their singing skills in a friendly and fun performance-oriented group setting. The choir performs a variety of literature including rounds, partner songs, and woo-part songs from a variety of genres and world sculptures. S.T.R.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Reading Engineering, Art and Math) The students in this club will be introduced to science, technology engineering and math through hands-on experiences, real life studies of our environment, calculations to help build the bridges have tomorrow and much more. The students will use and develop stronger reading skills and their art talents will by exposed through projects. Soaring To Extreme Places (STEP Team) The students will promote unity and diversity through stepping and group creativity. This talent demonstrates leadership, creativity and teamwork. Rhythm & Reading (Dance Team) The students will learn dance and rhythm through popular song lyrics. Just for Kicks (Soccer) Park Lakes Elementary is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to be healthy through physical activity. Students will learn about soccer through different skills and techniques. We are committed to the health and well being of mind, body and spirit.
