1 Programme Title: HNC in General Engineering Programme Specification This document provides a summary of the features and facts relating to the above qualification. It sets out the learning outcomes a student can expect to achieve though the completion of the programme along with a summary of teaching, learning and assessment methods. Further information can be found in the Programme and Unit Handbooks. 2 Distinctive Features of the Programme The Edexcel BTEC level HNC in General- Engineering is a qualification with a minimum of 120 credits of which 50 are mandatory core It must contain a minimum of 65 credits at level Developing a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life and thereby enable learners to make an immediate contribution to employment at the appropriate professional level. This course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the engineering sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of the specialist units Progression from this qualification may well be into or within employment in the manufacturing engineering sector where learners may work towards Incorporated Engineering status. Alternatively learners could progress to degree courses in related engineering areas such as manufacturing, mechanical, engineering, electronic or automotive engineering. Accreditation, membership or recognition arrangements by Professional bodies This HNC in General- Engineering has been developed with career progression and recognition by professional bodies in mind. This award can be used to enable students to enter further academic Higher Education Engineering Qualifications which will then lead to registration with The Engineering Council The development of this qualification has been informed by discussions/relevant publications from the Engineering Council, and the Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA) Date of revision: September 20
3 Aims of the Provision This HNC provides a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into higher education. The qualification is mode free but they are primarily undertaken by part-time learners studying over two years. The BTEC Level HNC in General Engineering offers a progression route for learners who are employed in the mechanical, manufacturing or electrical engineering sector The award aims to provide preparation for a range of technical and management careers in mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering Equipping individuals with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering based industry. Providing specialist studies relevant to individual vocations and professions in which learners are working or intend to seek employment in mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering and its related industries enabling progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering or related area Providing a significant educational base for progression to Incorporated Engineer level. 4 Intended Learning Outcomes a. Subject knowledge, understanding, skills and other attributes Practitioners will be able to: i) Analyse, synthesise and summarise information critically ii) Read and use appropriate literature with a full and critical understanding iii) Think independently, solve problems and devise innovative solutions iv) Take responsibility for their own learning and recognise their own learning style b. Subject-specific skills Practitioners will be able to: i) apply subject knowledge and understanding to address familiar and unfamiliar problems ii) use their knowledge, understanding and skills to evaluate and formulate evidence-based arguments critically and identify solutions to clearly defined problems of a general route nature iii) design, plan, conduct and report on investigations c. Generic skills: Practitioners will be able to: i) Identify and address their own major learning needs within well-defined contexts and to undertake guided further learning in new areas ii) Apply their subject-related and transferable skills in contexts where the scope of the task and the criteria for decisions are generally well defined but where some personal responsibility and initiative is required Date of revision: September 20
5 Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategies Teaching and Learning: Students will be taught in a variety of different ways including lectures, group and individual projects, practical activities and self-directed study. A combination of classroom based sessions and on-line resources will also contribute to the learning process. Assessment The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and learners evidence is assessed against the published learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that effective learning of the content of each unit has taken place. Evidence of this learning, or the application of the learning, is required for each unit. The assessment of the evidence relates directly to the assessment criteria for each unit, supported by the generic grade descriptors. All units will be individually graded as pass, merit or distinction. To achieve a pass grade for the unit learners must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specifications. This will give transparency to the assessment processes and provides for the establishment of national standards for each qualification Date of revision: September 20

7 Criteria for Admission BTEC National/Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or successful completion of a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship. Or applicants could be working in the engineering industry and want to enhance their qualifications. There will be an interview with a member of staff to determine the applicant s suitability. Indicators of the course s quality There are a number of different indicators of the quality of the course which include: Results of student surveys, unit feedback at completion of each unit, external examiner reports, the College s internal programme review, the success rates. High retention and achievement rates, above the national average The external verifiers report have been very complimentary and supportive Many of our students have progressed on to Graduate programmes at differing universities Excellent feedback from student on completion of various units Date of revision: September 20
