Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: Understand the role of managerial accounting in organizations. Understand and distinguish the characteristics and behavior of different types of costs including variable, fixed, sunk, controllable, opportunity, etc. Understand how these costs are presented on financial statements. Distinguish between different costing systems. Understand the role of budgeting in organization management. Understand the role that costs and benefits play in decision-making processes within an organization. The midterm and final examinations will be the primary evaluators of these objectives. Required Materials Managerial Accounting, 8th Ed. by Ronald W. Hilton is the required text. The textbook is the foundation for the course. The overall course schedule follows the layout of the chapters in the textbook and each class lecture will follow the relevant chapter s layout. Also, all homework problems assigned will be from this text. In class we may occasionally work through problems from the textbook so please be sure to bring your textbook to class every day. Course Format This will be a very fast-paced class. We will be covering fourteen chapters in five weeks. As such, it is extremely important that you keep up with required readings and homework problems. Your best chance for success in this course is to read the relevant chapter and attempt the assigned homework problems prior to coming to class. By familiarizing yourself with the material before class, you will be better positioned to understand the information presented during lecture. You will also be more able to ask questions and seek clarification on things you did not completely understand in the chapter. Because the class will move quickly, you will be primarily responsible for learning the material. In class I will highlight main learning points from the chapters, work through examples,

3 and answer your questions. It is up to you to ensure that you understand the material and are able to apply the concepts learned in class to other situations with different fact patterns. Grading Tasks will be weighted as follows: Two Exams 50% Final Exam 35% Quizzes 15% Total 100% The overall class average for this course has historically been in the range and I expect the grade distribution for this section to be similar. You may assess your performance based on the following guidelines: 93% - A 77% - C+ 90% - A- 73% - C 87% - B+ 70% - C- 83% - B 60% - D 80% - B- <60% - F I may curve the final grades if necessary, based on the class average and the academic standards for the course. A grade of Incomplete will be given only in the rarest of circumstances and according to university policy. You will not have the opportunity to raise your course grade by doing "extra credit" work either before or after the end of the semester. Exams: There will be two exams consisting of short answer, multiple choice and computational problems. These exams will not be cumulative. The final examination will cover all material presented during the semester. All exams are closed-book, closed-notes and are to be completed by you individually. If you are not able to take an exam due to an illness or other emergency reason, you should notify me before the exam, if possible, and provide me with written documentation (i.e., a note from the attending physician). I have final authority to determine if your absence is excused. Students with an excused absence from a midterm exam will be required to add the weight of that exam to the weight of the final exam. (I.e. the final exam would be worth 60% of the total grade of a student missing one of the midterm exams.) No make-up exams will be given and unexcused absences will result in an exam grade of 0. All students must take the final exam. The dates for the exams are listed on the Syllabus Quick Reference as well as the Class Schedule (last page of this handout). The first two exams will be taken during class time on the dates listed. The cumulative final exam will be administered on the date to be determined by the registrar. Quizzes: There will be five in-class quizzes throughout the course. You are expected to complete the quizzes on your own. Quiz due dates are listed on both the Syllabus Quick Reference as well as the Class Schedule. Each quiz will consist of five multiple choice questions and will be worth 15 points. I will drop your lowest quiz grade so that the maximum total quiz grade is 60 points. No make-up quizzes will be offered. You will have 20 minutes to complete each quiz. You will receive a grade of 0 if you take longer than 20 minutes to complete a quiz.

4 Homework: Homework problems from each chapter have been assigned on the Class Schedule. These problems are intended as a starting point for preparing for exams; you should not limit yourself to working on just the assigned problems. I will not collect and grade homework. Requests for regrades: I will post solutions to each exam on Blackboard after all students have taken the exam. If you would like all or part of an exam (excluding the final exam) to be regraded, you must submit a written request to me by the end of the second class after which the exams are returned (e.g. if an exam is returned on Monday, you must submit a written request for regrade by the end of class on Wednesday). In your request, you must identify what question(s) you would like to be regraded and what information you would like me to consider when reviewing your request. Adjustments related to computational errors in totaling your score should also be handled this way. I will notify you of any change in your grade within one week after you submit your request. Seeking Assistance If you have questions about course material, assignments, etc. you are encouraged to work with other students whenever possible. Asking and answering questions of other students is a great way to test and enhance your knowledge of course material. As listed on the Syllabus Quick Reference, the textbook publishers also offer a variety of student support on their website. Of course, I am also more than happy to meet with you during office hours, or by appointment, to discuss any issues related to the course. Feel free to contact me via with questions related to the course administration or to notify me of a scheduling conflict. , however, is not a very effective medium for addressing questions about course material; please present any such matters to me in person if possible. Course Policies To prepare you for professional careers, I expect you to exhibit professional behavior at all times during the course. Specifically, you are expected to: Come to class and be prepared. If you are unable to attend class you are expected to advise me ahead of time, if possible. Participate and make contributions. You can do this by asking and answering questions, and providing input when we work on problems in class together. Keep in mind that excellent participation may help you if I am making a fine distinction between grades. Arrive on time at the beginning of class; minimize class disruptions caused by entering/exiting during class. If you are running late, please enter class as quietly as possible and take a seat. I would rather you arrive late to class (while minimizing disruptions during your entrance) than miss an entire session. You are not required to bring your laptop to class. If you do, keep it closed. Turn off your cell phone, i-phone, i-pad, i-pod, i-etc. Texting is not permitted during class. Important Disclosures Dropping the Course: Students must go through the official procedures to drop the course. Quantitative Reasoning: This course carries the Quantitative Reasoning flag. Quantitative Reasoning courses are designed to equip you with skills that are necessary for understanding the types of quantitative arguments you will regularly encounter in your adult and professional life. You should therefore expect a substantial portion of your grade to come from your use of quantitative skills to analyze real-world problems.
