Emphasis on word processing applications, work measurement, and comparative product evaluation. Program learning outcomes define the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to demonstrate upon completion of an academic program. 2 With today s technology, the processing of words takes place in a variety of ways. In this course you will be learning about various technologies used for this processing as well as become familiar with the advanced features of Microsoft Word By the end of this course, you should be able to: Identify and utilize features of the current Windows operating system program. Demonstrate ability to use key concepts in document technology involving tasks such as: editing, creating tables, performing calculations, inserting graphics, and merging documents. Efficiently create and reproduce business documents by selecting, integrating, and using appropriate Microsoft Office Suite software. Utilize wizards and templates as a basis for business documents such as business cards, memos, and forms. Proofread and use correct word choice, spelling, and grammar in composing and designing documents. Identify the characteristics and communication implications of Web 2.0 applications. Define Social Networking, Social Media, and Social Bookmarking. Define RSS feeds and explain their use in business communication. Define and give an example of the use of Cloud Computing. Differentiate between public, hybrid, and private clouds Demonstrate the ability to effectively use Outlook and PowerPoint for business communication Use Google Docs to create, store and share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in the Cloud Use Blogger to create and maintain a class blog. 4 Communication This is an online course -- therefore, the primary contact method will be electronic communication through. You should check your for this class at least once every day. I make every attempt to respond to students in a reasonable amount of time. Just as I tell you that you should check your at least once a day -- I will do likewise.. When you send an , if you would like a reply, please ask a specific question. If you send me as message that does not ask a question, I will not be responding. All s need to occur in the program in order to maintain a record of all messages. You can expect me to answer s during my office hours. This does not mean I will not answer at other times. My policy is to answer s within 48 hours. You can usually expect to receive a response within 24 hours; however, please remember that I am not on 24-hr call. I hold regular office hours and those are listed on this syllabus. You should attempt to see that your messages that concern questions pertaining to this course are available at that time for me to answer. This is not to say I will not answer at other times, but you should not expect it or count on it. If you wait until shortly before assignments are due to address questions to me on the assignment, you may or may not get an answer before the deadline arrives. Late Work Policy In order to move quickly and successfully, specific deadlines for all assignments are clearly stated in the course syllabus. No late work is accepted - No Exceptions. For weekly assignments, the due dates for both Web 2.0, SAMS and Textbook Assignments are on Thursday at 10 AM -- That is 10 in the morning. If you work and can t upload on Thursday, you had better get your work uploaded ahead of time. No Makeup Exams will be given and No Late Work is accepted. All documents uploaded and submitted, whether by assignment section or , must be submitted in the.docx format. Example: JenningsProject1.docx IMPORTANT: DO NOT make the mistake of submitting a file with the file extension.lnk or a file with the document name beginning with a $ replacing the first letter of the file name. LOOK at the file name you have uploaded. If it has either of these problems you need to delete the file you have uploaded to and upload again. The.lnk usually occurs when you have placed a link to a file on your desktop and uploaded from there. The $ in front of the file name usually means you have the file open and instead of choosing the file, you have chosen the temporary file. In either case, the file will not open when submitted meaning I will have nothing to grade, and you will receive a ZERO. In the past, students have purposely turned in these incorrect file formats to buy themselves more time by indicating it was simply a mistake. I have later found out from other students that they did it intentionally. Therefore, I now have the policy that NO EXTENSION will be given because of incorrect file formats or incorrect submission. Hands-on Assignments: These assignments are designed to assist you in performing well on the tests. These assignments are listed in the assignment section of. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED. THERE IS NO ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE FOR LATE WORK, AS ALL DEADLINES ARE POSTED IN THIS SYLLABUS ON THE GBU 310 Spring 2011 Page 4

5 FIRST DAY OF CLASS. YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT YOU COMPLETE THE WORK EARLY ENOUGH THAT SHOULD AN EMERGENCY OCCUR, YOU WILL ALREADY HAVE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED. All assignments are due at 10 am on Thursdays (NOTE: 10 am that is in the morning. If you work on Thursday mornings you should be sure to upload the day before). Assignment Submission SAMS Exams will be recorded automatically to the SAMS program but not the grade book. These require that I put the scores into the grade book in manually. I will usually only record grades once a week. When you have questions, be sure to check the FAQ section on the homepage of the course when a question comes up new entries are made. Exams Exams MAY NOT BE COMPLETED at times other than the scheduled times. General Student Policies Plagiarism and Cheating Cheating is the easiest way to fail this class. Plagiarism and cheating are not acceptable and will not be tolerated! No points will be given to any assignment where plagiarism or copying exists. Plagiarism includes copying information from another source (fellow student, magazine article, published text, Internet, etc.) without properly citing the source of the information. This class will follow the university s revised policy (April 30, 2001) on Cheating and Plagiarism. See the further information below as well as the web site for this policy -- NOTE!!!!!! If two people turn in papers with sufficient similarities to indicate that they were typed by only one person, even if a few changes were made, BOTH people will receive a ZERO on that assignment and for all homework assignments for the entire semester. The daily assignments are designed to prepare you for the exams. They are worth minimal points and are not worth being caught cheating on! Academic Integrity (A-9.1) Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Withheld Semester Grades Policy (A-54) Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms, the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. Students with Disabilities To obtain disability related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, Room 325, / (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations. For additional information, go to Stephen F. Austin State University Policies Online Attendance/Tardiness The following changes to Stephen F. Austin State University s Attendance/Tardiness policy are effective March 15, 2006: Stephen F. Austin State University online courses have both synchronous and asynchronous requirements. Synchronous (or real-time) learning experiences called seminars happen at the same time for all students in a section. Asynchronous learning experiences happen throughout the course and do not require student participation at a scheduled time. The specific requirements for attendance are the following: Any first-term student, or any student seeking reentry, who does not log into classes within the first seven days of the term will be withdrawn from their classes and their enrollment will be cancelled. Students who have not participated in class by failing to log in for 21 consecutive calendar days (excluding scheduled breaks) will be administratively withdrawn from their program. Students who fail to log into any class within the first 21 days of the term will be dropped from the class or classes. Students dismissed due to nonattendance must apply for readmission by following reentry procedures. There are, however, specific deadlines. Students are expected to log into the course on a regular basis. Acceptable Student Behavior Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program (see the Student Conduct Code, policy D-34.1). Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be asked to leave class and may be subject to judicial, academic, or other penalties.
