1 Ms. Christine Thai Room 102 Office Hours: Wednesday & Thursday 3:40-4:30 PM Website: msthai.weebly.com 7 th Grade Language Arts Syllabus WELCOME TO 7 th GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS! Course Details: This year in your English class, you will explore different perspectives pertaining to you, our society, and our world through literature. Please refer to your myperspectives textbook for the specific units we will be covering. Materials: Below is a list of materials that students are highly encouraged to purchase for my class: Paper (we use this every day) A one-inch three ring binder Composition notebook (**this is a key item in my class**) 2 Blue or Black pens 2 pencils Grades: The following is a breakdown of grades: Grading Policy Summative Assessments 40% Unit Exams Benchmarks Formative Assessments 35% Quizzes Writing/rough drafts Exit Slips (with teacher feedback) Summaries (with teacher feedback) Completion 25% Class Work Simple homework assignments Notes Do Nows/Warm-Ups Summaries (without teacher feedback) The grading scale to be used is as follows: : A 80-89: B 70-79: C 60-69: D 0-59: F

2 Expectations: Each student will: Be prepared: come to class on time with necessary materials and ready to learn Be respectful: check your words, your tone, and your body language. Be respectful to yourself and your learning community. Remember to critique the comment, not the person Do your personal best at all times Follow all school-wide policies indicated in the student handbook Food/Drinks Students are not allowed to bring food, drinks or gum in the classroom. Electronic Devices Students are not allowed to use any electronic devices in the classroom. This includes having visible headphones. If an electronic device (cellphone, ipod, DS, headphones, etc.) is seen, it will automatically be taken away. This syllabus is considered your verbal warning. On the first infraction, you can pick up your electronic device at the end of the day from me. On the second infraction, a parent/guardian will have to pick up the device after school from me. Any infraction after that will result in detention with me after school. Homework Homework will be assigned every class period and will be turned in at the door as you enter the classroom (unless the assignment was to be done in your myperspectives workbook), or it is considered late! If a student fails to complete his/her homework, s/he must sign the No Homework log. Excessive failure to complete and turn in homework will result in a parent phone call home and/or mandatory after school tutoring. Late Work LATE WORK will receive no more than 50%* *In general, exceptions to the late work policy will NOT be granted, BUT if there are special circumstances or excessive hardships that you feel require an extension, you must talk to the teacher during their office hours 2 days BEFORE the assignment is due. Attendance and Makeup Work It is crucial that you are in class every day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get any work you missed or turn in work while you were absent. Only excused absences will receive the opportunity of makeup work. If a major assignment or project is due, being absent does not allow you additional time to turn it in. You must contact me before the assignment is due or it will be considered late; NO EXCEPTIONS. You have several options for getting the assignments that you missed or turning assignments in. Additionally, if a student misses a quiz or test due to an excused absence, the student has up to one week to retake it, or s/he will receive a 0. Academic Honesty Plagiarism, cheating, or copying of any kind on any assignment is absolutely unacceptable. If you choose to break this classroom rule, you will receive an automatic 0 on the assignment. A parent-teacher conference will follow. Tardies It is extremely important you are in your seat and ready to learn when the bell rings. If you are tardy, you will sign the tardy binder with your time of arrival and serve double the amount of minutes you were late. The time will be served after school with me in room 102. Failure to serve detention will result in a parent phone call or a parent-teacher conference.

3 Language Sexist, racist, homophobic, or degrading language will NOT BE tolerated in this class. ALL hate speech used in class will result in a parent phone call/conference. Bathroom Use Students will receive two bathroom passes each semester for my class. If you happen to forget or lose your passes once or twice, you will be expected to stay triple time after class for the time you used the bathroom (e.g. spent 3 minutes in the bathroom, spend 9 minutes after class) on the SAME DAY after school. If you do not show up after school, a parent will be called and you will lose bathroom privileges. Backpacks Backpacks are to be kept on the floor or on the back of the chair, not in your lap or on the desk. Classroom Policy for FAILING STUDENTS You are in class to learn and prepare yourself for your future. However, I realize sometimes you need extra help. Thus, the following class policy has been put in place to help you. Mandatory tutoring If you are currently failing the class, you are required to see me during my office hours to bring your grade up. If you fail to attend office hours more than twice, your parent/guardian will be notified. If necessary, a parent-teacher conference will take place to make a plan for the student which may involve having a weekly tutoring log signed by me and a weekly homework log signed by the parent. Consequences of following the guidelines Positive phone calls/notes home Shout Outs Student of the Month! KNOWLEDGE, which equals POWER Respect from your peers and instructor! Consequences of breaking the guidelines Warning Being asked to step outside to talk privately Phone call home/parent conference A waste of your time! A waste of your beautiful brain!
