2 Section II: Learning objectives Describe, in the spaces below, the specific responsibilities, assignments, and activities that will help the student to achieve each of the stated learning objectives for the social work practicum (these may be achieved by observation of agency staff, attendance at meetings and trainings, direct work with clients, supervision, performance of administrative responsibilities, recording and writing assignments, and attendance at the weekly seminar): Learning goal 1: To apply generalist social work knowledge and skills (i.e., assessment, engagement, cultural competence, advocacy, listening, contracting, treatment planning, problem-solving, limit-setting, intervention, evaluation, working with involuntary clients, working with collaterals, etc.) through supervised practice with diverse populations. Learning goal 2: To demonstrate the professional use of self and an ability to work collaboratively with clients to identify client strengths, examine possible solutions to problems, and contract for, implement, and evaluate interventions. Learning goal 3: To identify, confront, and, whenever possible, work to change environmental conditions, including oppression, discrimination, and oppressive or discriminatory social policies, that negatively impact individuals, families, groups, or communities served by the internship agency. 2

3 Learning goal 4: To use supervision to guide, enhance, and evaluate practice. Learning goal 5: To appropriately and effectively use written and oral communication in a professional setting. Learning goal 6: To critically assess, implement, evaluate, and, if necessary, confront agency policies and practices in a manner consistent with the values and ethics of the social work profession. 3

4 Learning goal 7: To become familiar with the roles that social workers perform in a variety of practice settings. Learning goal 8: To locate, use, and critically evaluate research relevant to practice with specific client populations. Learning goal 9: To understand and work within the values and ethical guidelines of the social work profession. 4

5 Learning goal 10: To recognize the situations and conditions that place many clients of social services and public agencies at risk. Learning goal 11: To demonstrate self awareness and be able to identify the ways that clients may be affected by the student s values, beliefs, experiences, and identities. Other learning goals: 5

6 Section III: Contract I (student) agree to become familiar with the agency s policies and services, to contribute positively to the agency's services to clients/consumers, and to abide by the agency's policies and stated expectations for student interns. I (field instructor) agree to provide the student with at least one hour a week of supervision, opportunities for direct practice with clients, opportunities to interact with and/or observe other staff, inclusion in staff meetings and/or case conferences, and information about agency policies and practices. I (faculty liaison) agree to meet with the student and field instructor at the internship site at least once a semester and to determine, with assistance from the student and the field instructor, an appropriate course grade for the internship experience. 6
