We heard and read with bemused interest this week from the Prime Minister that the Gonski report into education (2.0) in Australia found that a generation of students has been let down with our world position sliding over 15 years in reading, science and mathematics. The report calls for a major rethink of the way students are taught and recommends the following initiatives:- Every student should get a year s worth of learning for every year at school. Teachers should prioritise teaching of basic literacy and numeracy in the early years. Student success should be be measured in terms of the level of achievement and the extent of progress made (growth). An online tool for teachers to regularly and consistently assess where each student is at and how they are progressing. Teaching based on where the student is at irrespective of their age or grade level. Traditional A-F reports cards will be discarded. If Mr Gonski and Mr Turnbull had come to Fyans Park they could have seen all these initiatives already in practice. Early Years emphasis in literacy and numeracy has been standard practice here for over 15 years. 12 months growth for 12 months instruction is a cornerstone of our latest strategic plan as is measuring growth irrespective of grade level and using essential assessment software to monitor what students can do. Our results, certainly since 2010, have been improving in reading, maths and writing. There is no cruising here at Fyans Park as Mr Turnbull puts it and our teachers are working diligently to stretch all students to achieve their best. We are certainly not letting our students down and will continue to develop and hone our efforts for students in order to inspire them to be their best in all areas. Education is an easy political football. It s easy to generalise and highlight the negatives and in doing so ignore the fantastic work that teachers and students do every day in local school communities. Our government system needs help, no doubt, and discussion about ways to improve is always good - but don t just run it down. Maybe there should be a report into how well our political leaders on both sides are doing and how their short sighted policies made to bandaid serious issues like education are helping to cause the long term problems we now face. 2 SCHOOL NEWS Page 2 Teaching and Learning at Fyans Park At Fyans Park we are continuing to further develop and improve our current student progress reports to assist us in delivering you a more individualised learning program focussed on individual growth for your child across the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. Over the coming weeks prior to our week 5 progress reports, we will providing some detailed information on the following areas to assist with this change: Continuum of learning (levels of learning) Individualised learning Learning goals The Continuum of Learning at Fyans Park Primary School The innovative curriculum programs delivered from Prep to Year 6 at Fyans Park are derived from the mandated Victorian Curriculum. The Victorian Curriculum is structured as a continuum of learning, across levels of learning achievement, not years of schooling. This enables the development of targeted learning programs for all students, where the curriculum is used to plan in relation to the actual learning level of each individual student rather than their assumed level of learning based on their age. There is no age expected level of learning, with the focus on the learning and growth of individual students. Individual student learning achievement is reported to parents through our Student Progress Reports and Semester 1 and 2 reports. This supports our Annual Implementation Plan goal of one year s growth for one year s learning in English and Mathematics. The eight learning areas are: The four capabilities are: English Mathematics Science Health and Physical Education The Arts Dance Drama Media Arts Music Visual Arts Languages The Humanities Civics and Citizenship Economics and Business Geography History Technologies Design and Technologies Digital Technologies Personal and Social Intercultural Critical and Creative Thinking Ethical The capabilities represent sets of knowledge and skills that are developed and applied across the curriculum. There are 11 levels of learning in the learning continuum for English and Mathematics, Level Foundation through to Level 10. The other six learning areas and the four capabilities have 5 or 6 levels, referred to as bands, that are taught and assessed over a two year period. His presentation provides a valuable opportunity to hear first hand what the Victorian Police recommend for student use on digital devices and what constitutes legal and illegal behaviours online. He also provides strategies to undertake preventative measures around internet use, as well as recommends responses and resources to help manage primary aged and early teens with the use of technology. As teachers, we are increasingly responding to the consequences of online interactions that occur outside of school hours. These issues often impact student learning as they carry over in to the school day. Robbie gives a range of tips to keep your child safe online and use technology appropriately. The presentation will begin at 6pm and be held in the 5/6 Building. Please RSVP your attendance via bit.ly/2rddkzv GIRLS FOOTBALL Fyans Park participated in the Geelong Girl's Football Competition last week. On the day we played 6 games and won 2 of them. Our highlight was that everyone got to play and we just wanted to have some fun. The tackling was hard at first, but when everyone started to give it a go, we were unstoppable! The best part of the day was the picnic we had. We had a really fun time and really loved wearing the new Fyans Park football tops. Evelyn 5/6 O

Please don t wait until the 11 th hour to make your contribution (or organiser Jules hair will be white by the night!). The earlier donations are received the easier the event is to organise. We are hoping to receive all items by Friday 18 th May. Please drop off items at the office. Nothing is too small! If you need inspiration listed below are some ideas of items that are perfect for the night. A spare bottle of wine lying around in your cellar would be particularly helpful for our bottle lotto.
