12 Home-School Connection 0 Dear Parent (or Guardian), This year, your student will be taking an algebra readiness course designed by UCLA teacherleaders, mathematics educators, and mathematicians. The first semester of the course will emphasize foundational skills and concepts needed for success in pre-algebra, and the second semester will focus on pre-algebra skills needed for success in algebra. We encourage you to join your student s teacher and school as a partner in your young mathematician s progress. Each week your student will receive a colorful packet that contains all the work for the week. Some of this work will be done in class, and some will be assigned for homework. You can take an active role by reviewing the packet each week and asking your student to explain some problems to you. This will allow your student to practice communicating about mathematics, and give you an opportunity to find out what is being taught in the classroom. Your signature will indicate to the teacher that you have reviewed the work together. If you see that your student does not fully understand a concept, please encourage your student to use the Student Handbook that accompanies the program as a reference, and to ask the teacher for additional help.
