4 GCSE grade changes New GCSE grading system has been introduced, using numbers 9-1 instead of A*-G. How does this affect students? New grades, currently tie in with old grades as follows. 7+ is an A or A* 4+ is inline with old A* - C 9 is there for exceptional performance (about 2%)

5 GCSE grade changes What happens to the C or above measure? 4 or above is currently considered a PASS. 4 is a Standard Pass 5 is a Good Pass Over time the Pass may simply become 5 and above.

6 Future methods How is success likely to be measured in 2020? All GCSEs will be certified using grades 9 to 1. For schools: The percentage of students achieving a grade 9-5 in both English and Maths. The percentage of students achieving a grade 9 4 in both English and Maths EBacc The average grade students achieve across 5 core subjects (English, Maths, Science, MFL and a Humanity) Attainment 8 Progress 8 For PHGS 54% 78% (Above average)

7 Future methods ATTAINMENT 8 Measure based on attainment across 8 subjects: English Maths 3 from Science, Geography, History, MFL 3 other subjects

8 Future methods PROGRESS 8 Uses same 8 subjects but measures PROGRESS from end of Key Stage 2 to end of Key Stage 4. Project what a student with xxx KS2 SATs scores should attain by end of KS4. Difference between the projection and the actual score is the Progress 8 score.

9 A few reminders All subjects are now linear (meaning their exams take place at the end of year 11). Some subjects have an element of NEA Non-Examined Assessment (similar to coursework BUT different due to restrictions on assistance allowed). Often completed in year 11 under exam conditions (details will follow later in KS4). Currently any student not achieving a 4 or above in English and/ or Maths is required to attend lessons and resit their exams during post 16 study or apprenticeships.

12 On Track indicates whether or not your son is on track to achieve their target by the end of Y11. Attitude is a judgement about whether or not your son shows the right attitude to their learning in order to achieve their MEA (1-4 scale as in KS3). Minimum Estimated Attainment: Represents the minimum level that we would expect your child to reach by the end of Year 11. Predicted Grade is a prediction of the grade that he is likely to achieve in June of year 11 OP,GP,XP,BP represent measures of progress in Core PE: Outstanding Progress, Good Progress, Expected Progress, Below Expected Progress.

15 Use a large piece of paper turned landscape In the centre write a name of the topic that you are going to revise and add a simple illustration if you wish Now draw lines like branches (coming out from the centre) to represent the main areas of the topic. Each of these can be illustrated or could be in different colour or a different type face In turn, each of these could sub-divide into several more sections. Continue adding more branches until all the main information is on the mind map Finish your mind map could contain diagrams, names (and pictures) of important people, dates, places, etc. If it gets to crowed, you could create a separate mind map for that particular section Mind maps start with a theme, have main ideas and are held together with details To make mind maps more memorable: Use doodle, pictures and diagrams Use different colours Use different type fonts Use humour (cartoons), etc. Design your own (don t just copy other peoples) Condense

20 New GCSE first awarded August 2017 The GCSE exam board that we will be using is AQA. There will be 3 exams, 1 non calculator and 2 calculator. Each exam will be 1hr 30mins and have 80 marks. There is no coursework. 2 tiers of exams Foundation Tier (1-5) and Higher tier (4-9) The higher/foundation split has changed a lot in content from the previous specifications.

21 Assessment objectives from new GCSE (first awarded 2017) AO1 Use and apply standard techniques 40% Higher, 50% Foundation AO2 Reason, interpret and communicate mathematically 30% H, 25% F AO3 Problem solving 30% H, 25% F The new specification places a far greater emphasis on students problem solving and reasoning skills- new assessments throughout KS3 and KS4, dedicated numeracy lessons fortnightly to help improve students tackle these multi-staged, challenging questions. 21

22 What we are doing to help your child. End of unit assessments, more mock exams that students can use to help them prepare for the exams and set themselves revision targets from. Maths Work in years 10 & 11 during registration that help them with real life maths situations & revision work before the exams. Thursday lunch & after school KS4 SOS sessions for help with any homework or classwork Thursday evenings will be revision sessions starting January, these will be taught sessions on key topics that we know students struggle with. We are also helping your children with a lot more problem solving in lessons so that they will be prepared to answer the more complex questions that involve bringing a few topics together. 36 Similarities Study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The vast majority of the syllabus is exactly the same. Both give results as grades 1-9. (Biology, Chemistry and Physics will each have a separate 1-9 grade whilst Combined Science will have a double grade 8-8,8-7,7-7 e.t.c). Teaching time per fortnight will be the same. controlled assessments i.e. 100% exam.

37 Differences Triple Science gives you 3 GCSEs; Combined Science gives you 2 GCSEs. Triple Science-6 x 1hour 45 minute exams; Combined Science 6 x 1hour 15 minute exams 3 hours more. Triple Science has extra content for the students to cover in order to complete the whole program of study for each subject.

38 What happens now? The students have been put into sets for year 10 using the data from year 9 and their teachers professional judgement. Following increased academic and mathematical demand to the science GCSE: *students in set 1 and 2 will follow the triple pathway. *students in set 3 will follow higher trilogy pathway. *students in set 4-6 will follow either higher or foundation trilogy which will be personalised for individuals in each group. All students will be assessed regularly throughout year 10 to ensure students are on the correct pathway. Where we feel students have made exceptional progress or are struggling with their course we will make appropriate movements throughout year 10.
