2:25-3:10 Discussion of Day s Learning by Building Lynch: B103 Mayfield: B108 Murphy: C103 Schickler: C108 Turrill: C112 Break Out Session Details Enhancing Book Clubs: Moving Beyond Role Sheets to Promote Engagement and Deep Comprehension Kasie Allen The Common Core tells us that, in order to build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must have ample opportunities to take part in a variety of rich, structured conversations... Being productive members of these conversations requires that students contribute accurate, relevant information; respond to and develop what others have said; make comparisons and contrasts; and analyze and synthesize a multitude of ideas... Book Clubs can provide a powerful forum in which students can engage in such conversations, think deeply about books, and practice these conversational moves. Participants of this session will learn ways to effectively launch and facilitate book clubs with methods that will keep readers engaged, foster meaningful conversations, and deepen comprehension. A variety of resources will be provided, including sample mini-lessons, helpful anchor charts, a video clip of a book club in action, and strategies beyond the traditional role assignments employed in some book clubs, that encourage increasingly open-ended and thoughtful student responses. Planbook.com Bridgette Chaffin/Shannon Nichols Do you dread doing lesson plans every week? Do they turn out sloppy and hard to follow? If so, you need to attend this session. Planbook is a lesson planning technology tool for all grade levels and content areas. This technology will help you to structure your lesson plans in an organized manner with the ease of inserting the common core standards. During this session, you will learn how to set up a Planbook account, add and manipulate plans, classes, events, and templates. You will also learn how to print or share these plans electronically with colleagues or parents if you wish. Bring your ipad or laptop, your weekly schedule, and we'll get you started! Documentation for interventions and small group instruction: student needs, aligning intervention with need, and documenting progress Kristal White Interventions and targeted, small group instruction have become a regular routine inside the classroom. How do we ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of our students? How do we keep track of growth? Participants of this session will learn how to determine student needs, how to align an intervention based on student needs, and ways to document progress. These strategies will focus on ensuring data driven instruction, making data visual, and sharing growth. Various resources will be provided, such as: intervention and assessment templates, rubrics, and sample graphs. The presentation will correlate with research from Richard Allington and Jan Richardson (Guided Reading Plus).

Putting Math into the Hands of Children, K-2 Kim Gasieski/Jennifer Hayes/Elizabeth Kopchick Until recently, math often has been put on the back burner to Reading and Writing Workshop. This session is based around Dr. Nicki Newton s work in developing math learning with elementary students. Dr. Newton has been an educator for more than 20 years, working in inner city schools on both the East and West Coasts. Most recently, she has been helping districts and schools nationwide to integrate the common core state standards for mathematics. We will focus on the nineteen different types of story problems that students should be exposed to during kindergarten, first, and second grade according to the CCSS. We will highlight several ways to solve word problems as well as give you examples of anchor charts that can be used within your classroom. Participants will leave with new knowledge that will help them to plan and guide their mathematics instruction on a daily basis, so that math can be put back into the hands of their children. In addition, each participant will receive a packet of word problems that can be easily incorporated into their daily math instruction. Using Strategies within Informational Text Melissa Anderson/Jennifer Rondy Educators participating in this session will walk through a demonstration of research-based strategies being implemented in informational text, during multi-tiered guided reading groups. The strategies used align with the common core informational reading standards, including Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity. Resources provided to those attending will include a one-page overview of the strategies being implemented, one of the tools being demonstrated in the session, and a sample lesson from both intervention groups. The presentation will utilize the same strategy focus for both tier groups, using research related to Inferential Questioning, Genre Analysis and Pedagogy (Text Structure), and Scaffolded Questioning. What to say instead of, "Sound it out." Beth Shemanski/Kelly Vangel Teaching our youngest students to read effectively and efficiently is one of the greatest gifts we can give to a child. Teachers are bombarded with an endless supply of tricks that claim to raise reading achievement in students. Often, the tricks we teach children to use when reading simply add to the confusion faced by struggling readers. In fact, did you know that saying, "Sound it out," can be interpreted 50+ different ways? Put the tricks away and join us for a quick shop on Breaking Words! In this session, participants will learn how to teach multiple ways to break words that children will both understand and use on their own, as well as specific teacher talk that will promote student problem solving, instead of confusion. Implementing Math Work Stations within the E5-2nd grade classroom Gina Nichols/Ann Robb Looking for a way to provide your students with additional math instruction? Struggling to find time to work with guided math groups? Math Work Stations is the answer you need! Based upon the work of Debbie Diller, math work stations encourage learners to work with a partner or in small groups to problem solve while they are engaged in intentional hands-on activities. This engagement will allow the teacher time to work with differentiated math groups or to observe students in order to collect math data based upon essential learning. Participants of this session will learn how to get started with math work stations and how to use them effectively in their classroom. Teachers will leave the session with materials to allow them to begin math work stations within the first part of the school year. Twitter for Teachers: Why It's More Powerful Than You Think Amy Duncan and Karen Allmen You've probably heard people talking about Twitter, and maybe you've even wondered about giving it a try. In this session, we'll learn what Twitter is, why it's different from Facebook, and how it can have a dramatic impact on your teaching. Donalyn Miller, a.k.a. "The Book Whisperer," calls Twitter the best FREE professional development there is. We agree! Join us to begin harnessing the power of this fantastic resource. Prizes and fun guaranteed!

How to Tweet: Twitter for Beginners Amy Duncan You're ready to set up a Twitter account, or maybe you want to learn how to send your first tweet! This session will walk you through the basics of setting up an account, creating your profile, and learning about tweets and hashtags. You'll leave with all the tools you need to launch your Twitter journey. Running Records and RtI: How to Better Understand Your Struggling Readers Karen Allmen The better we understand our struggling readers, the more prepared we can be to help them. Running records are a great tool to assist us in closely observing our students as they read. In this session, we'll learn how to take a running record, how to better understand our results, and identify some next teaching steps based on what we see in our records. We'll focus as well on using running records within reading interventions -- how they fit with different tiers of support, and how we can use them to show growth and monitor progress. Practice time and answers to tricky running record questions will be included! Supporting Struggling Readers with Best Practice Activities Grade Levels: K-3 and Special Katherine Ruhlman Are you looking for best practice activities to help your struggling readers? Based on the research from Marie Clay, Richard Allington and Jan Richardson, this session will focus upon activities to support your struggling readers. Participants will receive various resources to use with their students. Using sound and letter boxes to help students write For E-5 thru First Grade Teachers & Special Cheryl Smith/Amber Weidinger Participants of this session will learn research-based strategies for using sound and letter boxes effectively. We will explore when and how to use sound and letter boxes in writing. Strategies for using sound boxes will focus on providing opportunities for students to learn how to phonemically analyze words. Strategies for using letter boxes expand upon students understanding of hearing and recording sounds effectively and move students into attending to what words look like and learning to apply spelling rules in writing. The presentation will examine research-based strategies that hand over ownership of learning to our students as learn to move through using sound boxes to letter boxes as strategies for problem-solving in writing. 30+ Quick Ideas To Get Kids Talking About Math Nicole Shons/Anne Burkhardt After you have them engaged, the next step is to get students talking about math. Total participation in math involves using active engagement as a tool to deepen understanding through discussion. In this session, teachers will be given over thirty quick ideas that can be used every day in the classroom to get kids thinking with their bodies and minds. A few of the topics that will be discussed are: mini-lessons, active engagement, math journals, and math stations. Resource: Total Participation Techniques: Making Every Student An Active Learner by: Persida Himmele and William Himmele

the Function of Behavior and Collecting Meaningful Data: Kyle Rhein and Randye Clarkson As the roles of general education and special education teachers are blending, behavior plans are becoming a common component of collaboration and planning. Before determining how to change a behavior, it is imperative to determine why the behavior is occurring. Participants of this session will learn to identify the four functions of behavior, the four dimensions of measuring behavior and how to collect data that meaningfully reflects the target behavior. The information from the presentation will reflect the research-based principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Participants will also be given an opportunity to test their new skills with real life scenarios and videos and leave with helpful hints on how to choose replacement behaviors. Beyond Just Talk: Taking Student Conversations in Grades 3-5 to the Next Level Cortney Brendel We often wonder why our classroom conversations fall flat. In this session, you will learn techniques for pumping up your talk by bringing meaningful conversation into your classroom from day one. You will take away activities and steps to bring your student conversation to the next level. Learn how to support your students, taking them from simple talk to meaningful conversation that will challenge and change their thinking. The strategies and techniques presented will be applicable to all content areas. Notebooks 2.0: Strategic Use of Notebooks to Teach the Mathematical Practices Lisa Pasek Simple student notebooks can be used as a powerful and strategic tool in the mathematics classroom, not just to catch the work the students do, but to actually ramp up the rigor and complexity of the work being done by both the teacher and the students to promote the teaching and learning of the Mathematical Practices as highlighted by the Common Core. Participants will engage in doing some math together, in order to analyze how the teacher practices around the use of the notebook can increase student engagement and learning through every phase of a lesson. This session is appropriate for teachers in grades K- 5, both those getting started with math notebooks as well as those looking to increase the impact of the notebooks to maximize student achievement. Participants will have an opportunity to share ideas across grade levels and build specific strategies for making the most of this unique learning space for pushing students mathematical reasoning to higher levels. Ipad key features for 3-5 elementary classroom use. Chad Kenny/Tom McEachern Tablets have become the hot tech-need to have- devices that are entering our schools. What are you going to do with them? This session is designed to introduce some basics in using the ipad in the elementary classroom, some applications that will support grade level curriculum, and other resources that are available for the devices. This is a hands-on session where participants will practice the gestures on the ipad, create folders, explore settings, and preview apps. I have ipads-now what? Nancy Abeare/Jennifer Christian This session provides direction in the valuable uses of ipads for K-2 students and teachers. Each participant will receive information on free educational apps and direction on procedures, such as: the safety/security of ipads, operating and creating folders for student independence. In this session we will demonstrate how to implement ipads across curriculum for student-led discussions, student reflection, and insight. Attendees will have the opportunity to play on ipads.

Ramp Up Your Guided Reading (K-3) Lori Dupuis Teachers often ask how do I meet the needs of all the readers in my classroom? This session on Guided Reading will provide the tools to be able to do this. The session will focus on blending the Jan Richardson model and the Guided Reading Plus model to help reach all of the readers in your class. Learn to emphasize problem-solving strategies, comprehension, fluency, word-solving strategies, and reading and writing links during guided reading. Participants will learn how to structure groups, plan for the groups, progress monitor student growth, and determine the next steps in student learning. Participants will also be provided with examples of lesson plans, prompts for contingent teaching and blank templates for planning. Word Study Allison Brown/Nichole Hayden "Word study" is an alternative to traditional spelling instruction. It is based on learning word patterns rather than memorizing unconnected words. How can we use word study to help students become fluent readers? Participants will develop their essential knowledge and skills in the core components of language using Word Study within the workshop model. We will discuss different strategies, management and assessments to use while teaching Word Study. The presentation is based on the book Words Their Way Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction. Exploring the On-Demand Writing Continuums Sara Taylor As the state continues to shift its focus on the 3 modes of writing (narrative, informational/explanatory, opinion) area districts are searching for the most effective writing assessment tool for each genre of writing. The Teacher College Reading Writing Project (TCRWP) have devoted hundreds of hours constructing a tool that will help individual teachers and schools focus on the goal of teaching the writer, not the writing. Participants will have an opportunity to explore and use the writing continuum all K-5 teachers will be implementing for the school year.
