1 MATH 0308 Intermediate Algebra Departmental Syllabus Catalog Description Math 0308, Intermediate Algebra. (3,3,0) Institutional credit only. After a brief review of topics from Beginning Algebra, this course will cover rational expressions; functions, and graphing; solving inequalities; exponents and radicals; solving quadratic equations; and applications. Prerequisite: One year of high school algebra and appropriate placement test score or Math F, Sp, Su ( ) Textbook Elementary & Intermediate Algebra, 5 th web site access is also required. Addison Wesley, My Math Lab Scope of the Course Unit 1 Slope of a line, graphing linear equations, writing equations of lines Unit 2 Operations with rational expressions, solving equations, applications Unit 3 Functions and Variation Unit 4 Solving inequalities, graphing linear inequalities in two variables Unit 5 Exponents and Radicals, solving equations, complex numbers Unit 6 Solving quadratic equations and applications Course Intent This course is the final course in the developmental mathematics sequence and is intended to prepare students for college-level mathematics. Students must earn a C or better in Math 0308 to be able to take a college-level mathematics course. Once in the developmental mathematics sequence, students are not permitted to retest to try to improve their placement. Learning Outcomes and SCANS* Competencies The successful student in this course will be able to: 1. perform operations on rational expressions; solve equations that contain rational expressions with applications (1,2,3,5,7) 2. sketch the graph of a linear equation; write the equation of a line (1,3,5,7) 3. conceptualize a function in various forms; evaluate functions using appropriate notation (1,2,3,5,7) 4. solve absolute value equations (1,2,3,5,7) 5. solve simple, compound, and absolute-value inequalities; graph inequalities. (1,3,5,7) 6. simplify expressions involving rational exponents; simplify radical expressions; solve equations that contain radicals. (1,3,5,7) 7. perform operations with radical expressions. (1,3,5,7) 8. perform operations with complex numbers. (1,3,5,7) 9. solve quadratic equations by the square root principle, complete the square, and quadratic formula; solve applications that lead to quadratic equations. (1,2,3,5,7) 10. solve equations that are reducible to quadratics. (1,3,5,7) Learning Activities and Assessment Students will attend and participate in lectures and group work, do homework on paper, and do on-line activities (homework and/or quizzes). After a brief review of topics from Beginning Algebra, this course will cover rational expressions; functions and graphing; solving inequalities; exponents and radicals; solving quadratic equations; and applications. Prerequisites: High School Algebra I and an appropriate placement test score or MATH Note about Developmental Sequence: Kilgore College offers 3 levels of developmental mathematics courses: Math PreAlgebra, Math Beginning Algebra, and this course, Math Intermediate Algebra. This course uses the same textbook as is used for the Math 0306 course, but will cover material from Chapters 6 through 11, omitting Chapter 8. The material from the first 5 chapters is covered in Math Students entering this course, Math 0308, who have not taken Math 0306, should be aware that material in the first 5 chapters is prerequisite knowledge for this course. However, please see that the course assignments begin with reviewing sections from Chapter 5 before beginning Chapter 6. Also, we will review material from Chapter 3 before beginning Chapter 7.

3 Note about Online Format: Because this is an online course, much of your coursework will be completed on your own schedule while meeting due dates. This will require you to be disciplined enough to do the work without an instructor standing over you. You should spend at least as much time working through these materials per week as you do in other college courses. Getting behind in this course can significantly hinder your ability to succeed. My role as your instructor will be one primarily of facilitator. In other words, I ll be here to answer your questions, provide your learning and testing materials, and monitor your progress. Otherwise, your learning is up to you. Required Texts and Other Materials: - Bittinger, Ellenbogen, Johnson. Elementary & Intermediate Algebra, 5th ed. - MyMathlab software with student access code. The course ID is: Verheyden _ The 5 digits will fill in the blanks and will change each semester. User needs a variety of plug-ins installed from - Videos of all the lectures are available to students either as streaming media or a DVD ROM. If you have access to a fast internet connection, then you can view each lecture video from the streaming media link on my faculty website. This website address is: If you do NOT have access to a fast internet connection, then you need to purchase a DVD ROM of lecture videos which correspond to the lecture notes for the course, but also include the voice explanation. These are available at the Kilgore College bookstore next to the textbooks in the distance learning section. If you purchase please note that the DVD will NOT play in a DVD player. It is a DVD ROM and will only play in a DVD ROM drive of your computer. - PC or Apple computer that is fairly new with a relatively high speed internet connection preferred. - Web browser Internet Explorer or Firefox (preferred). ANY POPUP BLOCKERS MUST BE DISABLED IN ORDER TO VIEW MATERIAL THAT WILL BE DOWNLOADED. - A large, self-addressed, stamped, envelope must be sent to the instructor for each item you want returned to you. You may mail the envelopes with your assignments if you wish, or you may send several at once at the beginning of the semester. Supplemental Materials Available - Lecture notes from my class of Intermediate Algebra on Kilgore College campus will be posted on my web site for each section covered in the text. These notes will be saved as pdf files from my lectures on a SMART board in my day class here at Kilgore College. Online students are free to access these notes by downloading them from my website at Note that the set of CDs or DVD that you purchased already has a set of lecture notes for the whole course as well. Also, note that the streaming media can be accessed from this same web site. - Students can purchase a set of CD s provided by the publisher of the digital video tutor. The digital video tutor is also available through mymathlab online, but will be extremely slow to download for those with dial-up. Students may buy directly from the Pearson Education web-site with address: Course Compass License: You are not to use the access information originally owned by someone else. Course Compass/MyMathLab subscriptions are not transferable. This violates the license agreement: 3. Use of the Information and Materials of the Website The license granted herein is nonexclusive, personal to you and nontransferable. The license is determined by the type of subscription being created through a Pre-assigned Activation

4 ID/Password or through online purchase. The type of license and the access authority to which it applies is described in Sections College/University Student/Individual Subscriptions. The license granted herein is for single user access to resources developed for students to use in conjunction with course assignments and for self-study, self-assessment purposes. One User ID and Password with student authority is issued for the subscriber s use/ this User ID/Password man not be shared. Using someone else s information to gain entry into the Course Compass companion course violates the copyright laws. You will be reported for FTCC Honor Code disciplinary action. Daily Assignments: Assignments are listed under the Course Documents tab of Course Compass. These will include: online homework corresponding to each section of the book online quizzes over one or more sections for each chapter All of the online quizzes will be graded as part of your homework percentage. Although all of the online homework is necessary for learning the material, only some of the online homework will be submitted for a grade as part of the homework percentage. These will be noted in each chapter. (See the due dates for all online quizzes and online homework in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). Submitting Assignments: Online homework can be accessed anytime before the specific due date for that particular section. You will have until midnight of the due date to respond with the answers. Not all of the homework sections will be counted in the homework percentage. Although all the online homework is necessary to master the material, please SUBMIT ONLY the homework sections that are due. (See the due dates for online homework in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). Online quizzes must be taken within a certain time frame and have specific due dates. You will have until midnight of the due date to respond with the answers. Failure to respond in the time allotted will result in a grade of 0. Once you begin the quiz, you must finish it. Each quiz will be available unlimited times, and only the best score will be counted. You can access the answers only after the due date. (See the due dates for all online quizzes in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). Do not miss a due date or wait until too late. If you are working on an online quiz or homework close to midnight of the due date you will be cut off at midnight whether you are finished or not. Even late work caused by technological problems will not be accepted. PLEASE do not procrastinate! If you encounter any computer problems during the semester, you are to contact me immediately by or telephone. Note: I cannot open Works files or WordPerfect files. For , use rtf format. If this attaching option fails, then just copy and paste your work into the message itself; this option always works. Use only gifs and jpgs to send scanner work. Be sure to include your name and course within all documents.

5 Discussion Board: The Discussion Board feature of Course Compass will be used during the course. This can be accessed under the Communications tab. Students are expected to read and respond to items posted on the Discussion Board each week. Some weeks will be open for questions, while other weeks will have specific problems to be worked and discussed. Other assignments might be made through the Discussion Board as the semester progresses. This Discussion Board component of the course will be graded subjectively based on each student s participation and will count as 10% of the final average. Tests: There will be 4 major tests. Each test must be taken on one of two days scheduled. (See test dates in the weekly schedule planner and on the course calendar). You must call the Testing Center ( ) to request a time for your test AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE FOR whichever day you choose. You will be required to show your student ID or some form of picture ID at the Testing Center. If you desire to take your tests at the Testing Center on KC Longview campus, you must notify me at least one week in advance of the test date. I will need to send your test to Longview and this will take extra time. You also must call the Longview Center ( ) to request a time for your test ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE for whichever day you choose. Material covered on each of the 4 tests is listed below: Test 1 Chapter 6 Test 2 some material from Chapters 3, 7, and 9 Test 3 Chapter 10 Test 4 Chapter 11 Arrangement for off campus proctored exams must be made at the beginning of the semester. The proctor and location must be approved by me. The final exam will be administered during final exam week in the Engineering Science Building on the Kilgore College campus.
