1 Hello Pirate Parents! I think we are looking forward to a lot of May flowers resulting from these April showers! Next week we celebrate our Exceptional Teachers and Amazing Staff during Teacher Appreciation Week! We cannot be more fortunate to have incredibly dedicated, compassionate and creative teachers and staff here at North Dover! Congratulations to our 5 th grade students for successfully completing 2017 NJ PARCC testing! We are so proud of your efforts! Many kudos to our 4 th graders, who have been confidently completing the PARCC assessment since Tuesday and will conclude testing on Friday! Wishing the best of luck to our 3 rd grade who will be taking the PARCC Math from Monday, May 1-Thursday May 4 th! We are very proud of our students in Mrs. Grausso s and Mrs. Cascio s classes for their work in completing the DLM assessment! You are all rocking it! In the classrooms Mrs. Bowes's 2 nd grade art classes are finishing up their Claude Monet waterlily ponds. Students were inspired by his Impressionism style and created lily ponds that emphasized "dabbing" brush strokes, color blending, light, and texture. 4th grades will be learning about the American glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly. Each student will create their own "macchia" and all works will be added into a small school 3D installation! Mrs. Cooper's class, Ms. Doyle's class, and Mrs. Fenchel's class have been working hard to prepare for their "Candy Land"

2 themed Mother's Day Breakfast. Goody Goody Gumdrops...our moms are in for a real sweet treat! The kids have their lines and songs memorized with a very special surprise. Our breakfast will be held on Thursday, May 4th at 10:00 a.m. All moms will be able to enter through Door 14, Church Road entrance no earlier than 9:45 a.m. Please have your ID ready to be checked at the door! Mrs. Gottlieb's class is so excited about the arrival of 10 caterpillars this week. They are learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly, new vocabulary words, and are keeping a journal of what they observe weekly at centers. Students cannot wait to name them next week and watch them grow! Mrs. Gottlieb's class is all ready to perform the Q and U wedding on May 4th at 2:15! All of the students are doing a great job learning their speaking parts and songs. They cannot wait to show their parents the show! Please remember that the girls are to dress like queens and the boys are to dress like quarterbacks for the wedding. Have your cameras ready for this very cute show! "Plant a Seed and Watch Us Grow" has been the theme in Mrs. Pizzuto's classroom! Students have been busy learning about the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to grow. The classroom garden now contains pea plants, tomato plants and petunias! What are students most excited about? The pumpkin garden! In October, students carved a jack-o-lantern and planted the seeds. Now, there is a plant with many flowers on it! Hopefully there will be some pumpkins for next year's Halloween! This past month in Mrs. Grausso's class, the students have been learning about Earth Day and how to take care of our precious planet. The class has read stories and created books on how to be kind to our Earth. Our 3rd and 4th graders are continuing to do a great job with the DLM testing for English Language Arts and

3 Mathematics. We also just earned another "warm & fuzzy" party for the students acts of kindness and compliments towards one another. The class is also looking forward to a field trip to Cattus Island in May, where they will explore and study insects/animals in their natural habitats and other exciting activities! The students have been doing an excellent job working on various IEP goals and objectives while we review different topics in Reading, Language Arts, Math and Science. They have been able to respect their peers as they complete DLM testing 1:1 with Mrs. Cascio and remain quiet throughout the day. As a reward, the students have been earning some extra time outside at the end of the day. The students made beautiful projects for Earth Day. The projects included an arts and craft of planet Earth and a writing prompt about how they can heal the world and make it a better place. The students continue to excel at different vocational skill activities in the cafeteria each week as they help prepare the cafeteria for lunch service by cleaning tables, stocking the juices and snacks, bagging cookies, taking the stickers off of the fruit, etc. Lastly, the students made delicious peanut butter and brownie bites with Mrs. DeRiggi for cooking class and did an excellent job following the recipe and maintaining safety procedures in the kitchen. We're all so proud of their hard work! This week the 5th graders have been working extremely hard. All the 5th graders displayed a hardworking attitude while completing the Mathematics section of the PARCC and their teachers are very proud! In science, our students just culminated a unit on Earth Systems and are excited to explore chemistry concepts in our Matter unit. In Language Arts, many of the 5th grade students are working in book clubs and discussing many different literary elements such as; making inferences, drawing conclusions, and analyzing characters.

4 There have been great discussions taking place in these classrooms during book club meetings. In social studies, students will begin learning about The Revolutionary War and circumstances that contributed to this event. In writing, students continue to explore various writing genres in order to express creativity and demonstrate content knowledge. From our PTO: Congratulations to our very own Beth Berruti who will be working with Chef Mike at ABG to create a fabulous dish. The gift that keeps on giving...come out and support North Dover. Atlantic Bar and Grill Seaside Park Wed., May 17, pm - 9pm Ezio's Zuppa de Pesce (Featuring clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, and calamari, served over linguine) $30 a dish 100% of the proceeds for the dish will go to North Dover. Dine in or take out! Our North Dover Musicians and 5th grade Artists are hard at work preparing for the upcoming showcase on Wednesday, May 10th at 6:30pm! 5 th grade art work, under the guidance of Mrs. Bowes, will include Mandalas, Landscapes, Self Portraits, Illuminations, and more! Musical selections from North Dover s Orchestra, under the direction of Miss Kovacofsky, and Band, conducted by Mr. Mackey, will feature everything from Blues to Classical & from Rock to Pop. The students are all getting very excited to "show off" everything they have been working so hard at year round in both Music & Art. We hope to see you there!
