Management (MGMT) A program of study in the Department of Management leads to a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a major in Management. This major is designed to teach students to plan, organize, lead, and control business activities in both the public and private sectors. Students develop skills in decision-making, leadership, motivation, problem solving, and teamwork. Course Description UNC Charlotte Undergraduate Catalog MGMT Acquiring and Maintaining Talent. (3) Prerequisite: MGMT 3140 with grade of C or above. Concepts, methods, and issues used in effectively managing human resources in contemporary organizations with a focus on workforce planning, recruitment and selection, organizational entry, socialization, diversity, and the legal environment. Experience in developing and utilizing behavioral science research methods to assess effectiveness. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS For this course you will be required to purchase McGraw-Hill Education Connect access for Human Resource Management 10 th edition by Noe. You are not required to have a print text and please be aware if you purchase a used textbook you will still need to purchase Connect access. Connect access can be purchased during registration for the program, or Connect codes are available in the bookstore. If you would like a print version of the text to accompany the Connect program a print-upgrade option is available via Connect. This will be a full color binder-ready version of the text and can be purchased from the Connect homepage once you ve registered.

3 MGMT 3241 Smith p. 3 COURSE GRADING OVERVIEW Course grade breakdown: Exams = 50%; Class participation = 15%, Exercising Strategy Application Questions = 15%, and Harvard Business School Case Analysis = 20% EXAMS 50% There will be three (3) in-class exams each worth approximately 16% of your total grade (3 x 16.7% = 50%). Exams will cover course readings, class discussions and Exercising Strategy Application Questions. Format for Exams: Multiple Choice, True/False and Short Answer There are no Make-Up exams unless you have a documented excused absence from the Dean of Students. CLASS PARTICIPATION 15% Students should come to class prepared and ready to discuss the assigned reading and topic at hand. Completion of the assigned reading will factor into your class participation grade. During the first class, we will review the grading criteria. This will clarify my expectations of you with behavioral examples. Twice during the semester, I will ask you to self-assess your participation against the criteria and I will also assess your participation. This gives you visibility into your performance and provides opportunity for changes, if necessary. Students are expected to attend all classes, arriving ON TIME. Students should notify the instructor, via , if they plan to be absent from class. EXECUTING STRATEGY APPLICATION QUESTIONS 15% Complete a one- page response to questions accompanying the Chapter Executing Strategy sections. One case for each assigned Chapter (with the exception of Chapter 7). Grading criteria will be reviewed in class. HBS IN-DEPTH CASE ANALYSIS 20% The three to four page in-depth, critical analysis of a Harvard Business School Case on Acquiring and Managing Human Resources topics. Students will select their case topic from a number of options. A detailed assignment summary and grading criteria will be provided during the first class

In addition, during our first class, we will discuss my expectations of you and likewise, your expectations of how I can provide you will the highest quality instruction. In a nutshell, I view students as business professionals. My expectations simulate real world expectations found in business organizations students will join upon their graduation. Arrive to class on time respecting both the class and myself. Prepare for each class. Read (not skimming) what is assigned PRIOR to class. Participate in class demonstrating critical thinking, original thought, connecting comments, referencing course reading, etc. Be present in class meetings. This means no use of cell phones calls, texting, browsing. Laptops/tablets may be used for note taking only or students will be asked to put their laptops/tablets away. Limit side conversations as they distract those around you. Be responsible for your own class performance. Turn all assignments in on timeat the beginning of class. NO LATE projects accepted. Monitor your performance. Seek me out should you have concerns about your progress in the course. Act with integrity. No plagiarism, no cheating on exams.
