1 Math 0406 Syllabus Cheryl Cooley Office: G.218 Office Phone: Development of mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities with an emphasis on the concepts of beginning algebra Course Success. Make time to do all your homework between classes, no exceptions. And if you have any difficulties, get help right away. Attend class regularly. Math tutoring is staffed at most times 9a-8p Monday through Thursday, and Friday 9a-noon. The internet is also a useful source of information. Resources including solution manuals, class notes, grades and review videos can be found on the college s virtual campus. Use the link on the bottom of the college s website or type into your browser. Required course materials are available at the Brazosport College bookstore, on campus or online at A student of this institution is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Calculators: Calculators are not allowed on tests or quizzes. ACADEMIC HONESTY Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty. The principle of academic honesty is that all work presented by you is yours alone. Academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and collusion shall be treated appropriately. Please refer to the Brazosport College Student Guide for more information. This is available online at Academic dishonesty violates both the policies of this course and the Student Code of Conduct. In this class, any occurrence of academic dishonesty will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for prompt adjudication, and may, at a minimum, result in a zero for that assignment. Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services.

2 Attendance Policy: You are allowed a total of 4 absences (excused or unexcused). If you miss more than 4 classes you will be withdrawn from this course. If you have a TSI liability, you may be withdrawn from all your classes if dropped from this class. If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact me. It may be possible to makeup your missed class by getting tutoring in the math tutoring center; but you will need to contact me. Partial absences (including arriving late and leaving early from class) will be recorded as well. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what you ve missed and have it ready for the next class meeting. Grading: Grades in this course will be assigned based on your performance on tests, quizzes, and a cumulative final. Homework Homework is an essential part of the course and is listed on your tentative schedule. Although not graded, similar questions to the homework will be on the quizzes and tests. The assignments are meant to make sure that you have mastered all the concepts from a particular section. Most of the assignments will be from the text. The odd answers are given in the back of the book. An instructor copy with all the answers will be available for use in the LAC. It will be your responsibility to check for accuracy. Quizzes Quizzes will be given almost every class time. If you are absent on a particular day then you will receive a zero for that day s quiz. There are no make-ups. I will drop your lowest 2 grades at the end of the semester, the rest will average to count 18% of your grade. Grades will be assigned as follows: % A 80-89% B 70-79% C Below 70% F This is a pass/fail class. Although grades will show on your transcript, it will not count in your GPA. Tests There will be 4 tests given throughout the semester. Each test will count 18% of your grade. A 3 x 5 note card may be used on each test, the card must be hand written. If you are absent on a test day, you will receive a zero on that test. Generally, there are no makeup tests. If you make arrangements with me before the test, it may be possible to take a test at a different time. Otherwise no makeups. Your final exam will count as your missed test. Final There will be a comprehensive final. The final will be 10% of your grade. The final exam may also be used to take the place of your lowest test grade (or a zero for a missed test).

Simplify polynomial expressions. Solve linear equations. Solve linear inequalities. Translate statements into an algebraic representation. Solve application problems using an algebraic equation. Graph an equation by point plotting. Add and subtract polynomial expressions. Multiply polynomial expressions. Simplify expressions using the laws of exponents. Factor by removing the greatest common factor. Factor using the difference of two squares. Factor trinomials. Solve quadratic equations with factoring. Add and subtract rational expressions. Multiply and divide rational expressions. Simplify complex fractions. Simplify radical expressions. Add and subtract radical expressions.
