6 Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Winter 2019: January 7, 2019 April 21, 2019 HYBRID FORMAT ELECTIVE We are offering an elective course this winter in hybrid format. A hybrid format is a course format that combines online learning with a residential session schedule different from the traditional residential courses that meet once a week throughout the trimester. Hybrid formats may include sessions on select weekends or sessions that meet more intensively for one or two weeks. Hybrid formats enable us to offer courses at times that may be more convenient for some students, to bring in visiting professors who may be otherwise occupied during the trimester, and allows some of our distance students to participate in residential classes. Please read the course description and note the dates the class will meet residentially. Attendance at these residential sessions is mandatory. CARM/D 6657 Conflict Coaching Theory and Practice- Dr. McKay This course examines the growing use of conflict coaching as a conflict intervention process and introduces different models and related theoretical foundations. The integration of theory and practice will emphasize the various stages including identity framework, narrative, needs assessment, goal setting, and feedback, utilizing a relational and systems orientation. The course develops coaching skills, strategies, and knowledge, and uses a practice-based approach, including role-plays and case studies. This class will meet residentially (NSU main campus) on the following dates: January 18 6 PM to 9 PM January 19 9 AM to 4 PM February 9 9 AM to 5 PM January dates may be done virtually; check with instructor regarding RI dates Please wait for confirmation on specific times and days before making travel arrangements. CARM/D 6660 Conflict Management in Groups: Overt and Covert Dynamics Dr. Neil Katz The purpose of this course is to provide participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes to be effective in groups with an emphasis on analyzing and managing overt and covert conflict. The course also examines issues of communication, leadership, power and authority in relation to group and interpersonal effectiveness. This course enables participants to cope with complex issues as they emerge in the natural life of small groups, large groups and organizations. Learning about group life is gained through direct experience in a temporary learning organization created in the course. The course is designed as a living laboratory where members can experience and explore group life as it occurs. Mandatory attendance at the Davie campus is required February 10, February 11, and February 12, from 9:00am -5:30pm for the residential part of the hybrid course. Please wait for confirmation on specific times and days before making travel arrangements.
