1 Research/Statistics Workshops for Spring 2013 By Hui Bian, Ph.D., Statistics/Research Consultant, OFE Date Workshops Description Time Location Instructor Thursday, 24/Jan Basic statistics The purpose of this course is to teach basic statistics for people who do not know much about statistics. The workshop will focus on scale of measurement, type of data, descriptive statistics (central tendency and variability), and inferential statistics (t test and estimation of confidence interval). SPSS is the software used for demonstration. Monday, 28/Jan Qualitative Research We will talk about in-depth interviews in qualitative research. Thursday, 31/Jan SPSS introduction I (East campus) Friday, 1/Feb SAS series day 1: Introduction to SAS Tuesday, 5/Feb JMP introduction (East campus) The workshop will teach you how to use SPSS from the very beginning including (1) Understand SPSS interface; (2) how to enter data in SPSS and import external data into SPSS; (3) how to edit data; (4) how to clean data; (5) how to conduct variable transformations: compute or create new variables; (6) how to sort cases and select cases; and (7) how to merge files. Discuss the layout and basic use of SAS software. Input data manually via DATA step. Merging, appending, sorting, and other manipulations will be discussed. JMP is a point and click based software for statistical analysis developed by SAS. JMP has a very flexible, user friendly interface with a wide range of capabilities easily accessible to both experienced and new Dr. Jason Brinkley 1

2 Thursday, 7/Feb SPSS introduction II (East campus) Friday, 8/Feb SAS series day 2: Importing Data into SAS Monday, 11/Feb Friday, 15/Feb Qualitative Research SAS series day 3: Messy Data in SAS statistical users. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a hands on demonstration of the software; and while a wide variety of topics will be discussed, the emphasis will be on simple descriptive statistics, graphics, and elementary inference such as t-tests and tables. This workshop is the continuation of the SPSS Introduction 1. You are going to learn (1) how to screen or explore data, focusing on distribution diagnosis, outliers, and univariate statistical assumptions; (2) how to run some basic statistical analyses: frequency, descriptive, crosstabs, bivariate correlations, and partial correlations using SPSS. Discussion of SAS Libraries, manual importing of data from SAS and non-sas sources, formatting and reporting data, quality control for big data. Topic is TBA Transitions between character and numeric data, working with dates and time, summarizing large data into smaller datasets by counts or groupings. Thursday, 21/Feb Using Excel in research This workshop will focus on using Excel to do data entry, Excel tables including regular table and pivot table, how to use tables to do some data analyses, and graphs to summarize data. Friday, 22/Feb SAS series day 4: Univariate and Bivariate Summarizing and describing data in SAS. One variable statistics, visuals, and tables. 2502G Laupus 2

Monday, 25/Feb Wednesday, 27/Feb Qualitative research design book reading Writing for publication: paper sharing I Friday, 1/Mar SAS series day 5: Bivariate Statistical Inference in SAS Before this meeting, please read Chapter 1 and 3. The book we are going to use is: Qualitative inquiry & research design: Choosing among five approaches by John W. Creswell, second or third edition. This session is about how to write a good qualitative research paper. Dr. Sharon Knight, from department of Health Education and Promotion, College of Health and Human Performance, will share her work, perspective, and experience in writing a good qualitative research paper with you. Correlation, Regression, t-tests, and oneway ANOVA. Thursday, 7/Mar NVivo introduction I The workshop will focus on basics of NVivo 9. They include: introduction of NVivo9 interface; importing document, video, dataset, and pictures into NVivo; creating nodes and relationships between nodes; creating and assigning classifications for sources and nodes; and exporting items. Friday, 8/Mar SAS series day 6: Advanced Coding Monday, 18/Mar Wednesday, 20/Mar Qualitative Research Writing for publication: paper sharing II Introduction to macros and automated processes. Using ODS for reports and visualizations. 1:00-2:00pm Topic is TBA This session is about how to write a good qualitative research paper. Thursday, 21/Mar NVivo introduction II The workshop will focus on how to work with demographic data and classification sheets, create models and graphs to visualize results, and create reports and extracts. Monday, 25/Mar Thursday, 28/Mar Qualitative research design book reading Nvivo demo (webinar) from QSR company Please read Chapter 4 and 5 before this meeting. We will focus on phenomenological research in the discussion. The book used is: Qualitative inquiry & research design: Choosing among five approaches by John W. Creswell, second or third edition. An overview of the key features of NVivo software How NVivo supports qualitative and mixed methods research Using NVivo for writing robust literature reviews NVivo for grant writing and research proposal development, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation How NVivo provides a platform to collaborate with colleagues or your research team in real time Using real data from a Duke University study of the impact of coastal environmental change on residents lives. We will demonstrate how NVivo software works with different types of data such as interviews, focus groups, video, surveys, and social media. We are going to use AMOS to construct and analyze SEM models including regression model, path model and confirmatory factor model. In addition, the SEM applications will be illustrated, such as Multiple Indictors and Multiple Multiple- Group Models if time permits.
