Further instructions are provided on page five of this syllabus. Required Textbook: N. Gregory Mankiw, Principles of Macroeconomics, 4th Edition. Please read the Aplia handout prior to purchasing the textbook. Supplemental Readings: Readings from sources outside the texts will occasionally be assigned. These will be posted to Aplia. They are required for the course. Prerequisites: None. Course Description and Objective: Economics is the study of how individuals deal with the problems of scarcity and choice. The fundamental assumption of economics is that individuals behave rationally when faced with these problems. This assumption turns out to be extremely helpful in understanding important aspects of the world around us. We will begin the course by introducing a few simple economic models that help us understand rational decision-making. Our focus will be macroeconomics--the study of the economy as a

2 whole. Inflation, unemployment, interest rates, money, economic growth, and fluctuations in economic activity, are some of the macroeconomics concepts that are discussed in this course. We also analyze the effects of the government's fiscal and monetary policies on the overall economy. My primary objective is to introduce students to fundamental macroeconomic models and concepts to help them understand how economists explain aggregate economic activity. and Website: You are responsible for maintaining and checking your University account on a daily basis. Please make sure you check the Aplia site regularly for announcements. Attendance: I have no attendance policy for this course. However, note that excessive absences are often correlated with poor test performance. Assignments and Exams: Aplia Assignments I plan to give you assignments from Aplia. The questions may include any of the following: multiple choice, true/false, problem-solving and short answer. The purpose is to encourage you to follow along as we cover material in the course. It is your responsibility to check the Aplia site and keep up with these assignments. There will be 15 Aplia assignments; only 12 of those will count towards your grade (I will drop the lowest three). No late assignments will be accepted. Exams You will have two midterm exams and a noncumulative final exam. The midterm tests and the final exam may consist of a variety of types of questions, including multiple choice, problemsolving and short answer. Please come to the exams on time. If you arrive late for an exam, you will be allowed to take the exam provided that no student has left the classroom. However, you will not be given any extra time to complete the exam. You are allowed to use a basic nonprogrammable calculator for all exams; you may not use a cellular phone as a calculator. Makeup exams There will be no makeup exams for the midterm exams or the final exam. If you miss a midterm exam, I will add the weight of the missed exam to that of the final exam. Failure to take the final exam at the scheduled time will result in a grade of zero. Two exceptions to this rule apply: (i) If you complete the process outlined by the Office of Curriculum Systems ( verifying that you have another final exam scheduled for the same time or three final exams scheduled for the same day: Or (ii) If you have a family emergency or serious illness. Documentation of the emergency or illness will be required, and you must make arrangements promptly to take the exam at another time.

3 Exam Dates: Exam 1 Thursday, February 12 th Exam 2 Tuesday, March 31 st Final Exam Thursday May 7 th (12:00 pm 3:00 pm) Overall Course Grade: Your course grade will be calculated by multiplying the appropriate weight by your percentage score on each graded component and determining a weighted average. Grades will be determined by the following scale: A 93 & above A B B B C C C D F Your grade will be based on the following: Assignments 20 percent (all equally weighted) Two In-class Exams 20 percent each Final Exam 40 percent There are no opportunities for extra credit; you will receive the grade that you earn. Academic Honesty: You are expected to adhere to the UGA Honor Code, which states, I will be academically honest in all of my academic work and will not tolerate academic dishonesty of others. All academic work must meet the standards contained in A Culture of Honesty. Each student is responsible for knowing those standards before performing academic work. For more information, please consult The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe, and ignorance is not an acceptable defense. Cheating will not be tolerated. Special Needs: I am aware that there are many situations that may arise during the semester that can affect your in-class performance.
