2 Brazosport College 500 College Dr. Lake Jackson, Texas ELPT 1319 FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRICITY I COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to basic direct current (DC) theory including electron theory and direct current applications. NCCER credit available. (3 SCH, 2 lecture, 2 lab) COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The student will explain atomic structure and basic electrical values such as voltage, current, resistance, and power; calculate electrical values for series, parallel, and combination circuits; calculate voltage drop based on conductor length, type of material, and size; summarize the principles of magnetism; and utilize electrical measuring instruments. 3 ACADEMIC HONESTY Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty. Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services.

4 COURSE GOALS The following list of course goals will be addressed in the course. These goals are directly related to the performance objectives (Addendum A). (* designates a CRUCIAL goal) 1. Demonstrate safe working procedures in a construction environment. 2. Identify the methods of hands bending EMT conduit. 3. Identify the methods of bending ridged conduit. 4. Identify and explain the use of threaded fasteners. 5. Identify and explain the use of non-threaded fasteners. 6. Define the units of measurements that are used to measure the Properties of electricity. 7. Explain how voltage, current, and resistance are related to each other. 8. Explain the basic characteristics of a series-parallel circuit 9. NCCER Module : Orientation to the Electrical Trade. 10. NCCER Module : Electrical Safety. 11. No Longer Used 12. 5 STUDENT CONTRIBUTIONS Each student will spend at least 4 hours per week preparing for class. The student will have an opportunity to evaluate the instructor. COURSE EVALUATION Student grades will be assigned according to the following criteria: DRAWINGS 20% UNIT EXAMS 60% FINAL EXAM 20% Grades of A through F will be assigned according to the chart below: = A = B = C = D 59-0 = F COURSE SCHEDULE The class meets for 2 lecture hours and 2 lab hours per week. SCANS Competencies: The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the area of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the area of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program in which each of these competencies and skills in this course, see Addendum A.

6 ADDENDUM A PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES Module No Performance Module Objective Task 1 1. Perform a visual inspection on various types of ladders Set up a ladder properly to perform a task Properly don a harness. 3,4,5 4. Perform a hazard assessment of a job such as replacing the light in your classroom. Discuss the works to be performed and the hazards involved. Locate the closets phone to the work site and ensure that the local emergency telephone numbers are either posted at the phone or know by you and your partner(s). Plan an escape route from the location in the event of an accident. Module : No Performance Module : No Performance Module Objective Task 3 1. Make 90-degree bends, back-to-back bends, offsets, kicks, and saddle bends using a hand bender Cut, ream, and thread bender. Module Objective Task 1, 2 1. Under instructor supervision, measure the voltage in your classroom from line to neutral and neutral to ground. 1, 2 2. Under instructor supervision, use an ohmmeter to measure the value of various resistors.
