2 Assessment and Curriculum Update Aim: To help inform parents about Year 10 and the transition to GCSEs. There will be a fast pace 5 min presentations. The slides will be available on the website. We will all be available for questions at the end.
3 What we said last time we met.. Advice to students It is a 2 year commitment. Don t just think need to think about and beyond. Future pathways GCSE is to provide a broad and balanced starting point. What are you good at? What do you enjoy? Remember it is about YOU!

7 New Grades GCSE English and maths have changed from Grades A*-G to 9-1 All the other subjects remain as A*-G for this year only. Students in Year 9 will be graded across all subjects 9-1.

11 Pastoral System Changes since last year, now one team per year. Enables better contact with parents and students. School day has also changed Academic Mentoring Year 10 as a year group. Students are able to discuss within their year any issues relating purely to them.
12 Pastoral System In the first instance you will have contact with the Academic Mentor, hopefully they have already made contact to introduce themselves to you. There are times when it is necessary for the Pastoral team to be involved:- Behaviour issues Attendance issues Uniform issues Detention issues
13 Detention system Late checks to ensure students arrive on time for school result in an immediate lunch time detention After school Subject detentions/pastoral detentions IE room Internal exclusion student removed from lessons works in IE External exclusion for continuous behaviour issues
14 Academic Progression As a pastoral team, we endeavour to ensure that students progress throughout their studies. Therefore there will be: Regular audits of progress carried out with Directors of subjects. Intervention carried out where necessary to assist students keep on track. This may involve: Conversations with parents Extra support for students After school sessions
15 Support The pastoral team are also there to support students and parents through any issues that may occur in a students life and also gain the support of both internal and outside agencies to help in that support.
16 Rewards The best part of the job is offering rewards in the form of points, trips, gifts etc. These are for students who: attend regularly receive no detentions and generally do well, not just academically.

25 Introduction to GCSE English Introduction to GCSE English Language and English Literature (9-1)
26 The Basics All students will be studying for two GCSE qualifications: GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature There is no longer any coursework or controlled assessment work for either GCSE course. Each course is 100% exam There is only one tier of entry no more Higher or Foundation Tier. The GCSEs will be assessed using the new 9-1 grading system.
27 9-1 Grading System The Government have announced that the expectation for GCSE on the new 9-1 grading system is that all candidates achieve a Grade 5 (C+/B-)
28 GCSE English Language (9-1) From September 2015
29 GCSE English Language (9-1): Overview The grade that students receive at the end of the WJEC Eduqas GCSE English Language course is entirely based on your performance in two exam papers. Component 1: 20 th Century Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing (1 hour 45 minutes) Component 2: 19 th and 21 st Century Non- Fiction Reading and Transactional/Persuasive Writing (2 hours)
30 What will students be studying and learning? Reading Across two GCSE English Language components (units), students will be studying the following: Critical reading and comprehension Summary and synthesis Evaluation of the writer s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features Comparing texts
31 What will you be studying and learning? Writing Across two GCSE English Language components (units), students will be studying the following: Producing clear and coherent texts Writing for impact Component 1 gives students opportunities for writing to describe and narrate, and imaginative and creative use of language. Responses should be narrative or recount. Component 2, across two tasks, gives students the opportunity to write for a range of audiences and purposes, adapting style to form and to reallife contexts in, for example, letters, articles, reviews, speeches, etc.
32 What will students be studying and learning? Spoken Language As well as preparing for the two GCSE English Language exams, the course also includes Spoken Language assessment. This is not an exam. Instead students will be completing one formal presentation or speech where you will be: Presenting information and ideas Responding to spoken language Expressing ideas using Standard English Spoken Language assesses AO7, AO8 and AO9. Achievement in Spoken Language will be reported, but it will not form part of the final GCSE English Language qualification mark and grade. It will be marked on a Pass, Merit and Distinction basis.

34 GCSE English Literature (9-1): Overview The grade you receive at the end of your WJEC Eduqas GCSE English Literature course is entirely based on your performance in two exam papers. Component 1: Shakespeare and Poetry (1789-present) A Shakespeare play [extract and essay] Eduqas Poetry Anthology [close analysis and comparison] (2 hours) Component 2: Post 1914 prose/drama; 19 th -century prose; unseen poetry (20 th /21 st centuries) Modern novel/drama 19 th -century novel Unseen poetry analysis [close analysis and comparison] (2 hours 30 minutes)

Every student will have key words and quotes test each week, this covers spellings and meaning. A spelling session is offered each week for students who want or require additional support, please encourage your child to make use of these.
