1 Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course Information: Course Prefix/Number: OCE 1000 Course Title: Introduction to Marine Science CRN: Credit Hours: 3 Semester: Fall 2018 Class Days, Location, Time: fully online, mandatory on campus meetings required for midterm and final exams (see Calendar portion below for those dates). In addition, each student must make an appointment to see the instructor by the due date (see Calendar portion below for that date). This appointment can be in person or online by appointment ( the professor for details on how that will be done). Course Description: An introduction to the physical, chemical, and biological nature of the oceans. Topics include (1) the history of marine science and current and future developments, (2) the history and shape of the oceans, (2) the physical and chemical properties of sea water, including waves, tides, and ocean currents, (3) the biology and ecology of marine life, (4) the need for effective conservation of the ocean s resources. Thurman, Pearson Education Incorporated, ISBN 13: Technology Requirements: Canvas is a required component of this course. Students unfamiliar with Canvas are expected to complete the Student Orientation course located in Canvas within the first week of classes. Major writing assignments need to be created and saved in a file format that is compatible with Microsoft Word. If using a word processing program other than Word, it is the student s responsibility to adhere to all formatting and submission requirements. Please ask for help if you are unsure how to save a file in a Word-compatible format. Please see the LSSC Lakehawk Page for information on how to obtain Microsoft Office 365 as an LSSC student. Student Learning Outcomes: The following outcomes will be assessed in this course. An outcome is defined as something students take with them beyond this course. After successful completion of this course, the student will: Describe and identify components, assess and discuss results, as well as design (and/or implement) scientific experiments. Critically evaluate qualitative and quantitative data, applying inductive reasoning to arrive at scientifically rational conclusions. Demonstrate competency with the principles of the scientific method, as well as an appreciation for its purpose in obtaining results from a collection of carefully recorded objectively based observations representing the current level of knowledge as accepted by the scientific community. Integrate basic concepts of chemical, physical, and biological processes into a cohesive awareness of the interrelationships that exist between them. Course Objectives: Objectives are defined as what the course will do and/or what the students will do as part of the course. To demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of marine science and explain the highlights in the history of the field as well as current and future developments. To understand the basic structure of the Earth and the dynamic forces that shape it. To demonstrate a basic understanding of the chemical and physical properties of seawater and the ocean circulation and tidal patterns. To gain an appreciation for the biodiversity of the world s oceans by examination of major groups of organisms including prokaryotes, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. To understand and describe marine ecosystems including concepts of population dynamics, species interactions, habitat and niche, trophic levels, and nutrient and energy cycling.

3 To understand some of the human impacts on the marine environment and the need for responsible stewardship of the ocean and its resources. ( Privacy Policy (FERPA): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Zero-Tolerance for Violence Statement: Lake-Sumter State College has a policy of zero tolerance for violence as stated in College Board Rule Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with Board Rule Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Institutional Information: Once the Add/Drop period passes, students deciding to discontinue class attendance and/or online participation have the responsibility for formal withdrawal by the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawal Deadline: 29 October 2018 Instructor Policies: You are expected to attend each lecture and laboratory and are responsible for obtaining any materials missed. Other particulars regarding attendance and withdrawal are outlined in the LSSC catalog. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. It is the student s responsibility to have an alternative plan if their main computer system fails or encounters technical issues that prevent the completion of required assignments by the specified due date (i.e., complete work on-site at a campus library or learning center, have a secondary computer

4 available, etc.). Computer hardware, software and/or printer problems are not acceptable excuses for incomplete or late assignments. Late Work/Extensions: No make-up lecture or lab exams except for documented medical or family emergency reasons. Late assignments will not be accepted. Classroom Etiquette: Cell phones must be turned off or on mute if brought to class. Grading Information: Grading Scale: A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and below Methods of Evaluation: All chapter assignments are due as indicated on the course calendar. Examinations may contain information covered on previous tests. Midterm and final exams for this course are given on campus on the date and times indicated. You must take these exams on campus.
