1 Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course Information: Course Prefix/Number: STA 2023 Course Title: Elementary Statistics I CRN: 10211, Credit Hours: 3 Semester: Fall 2018 Class Days, Location, Time: Online with required on- testing Course Description: This course introduces the student to topics including measures of central tendency and spread, probability, random variables, binomial and normal probability distributions, confidence interval estimation, small sample inferences, and hypothesis testing. Other topics include correlation, simple linear regression, and an introduction to nonparametric statistics. You will have a choice between a TI 84 (recommended) and TI 30XS MultiView during on- testing, provided by the testing proctor. Your course will be delivered through Canvas and My Stat Lab. You will register in My Stat Lab when you complete the Getting Started activities in Canvas. Student Learning Outcomes: The following outcomes will be assessed in this course. An outcome is defined as something students take with them beyond this course. After successful completion of this course, the student will: 1 Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of designing a study. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of descriptive statistics through performing and interpreting calculations, 3. Organize raw data, and create graphs and tables to display information, with and without the use of appropriate technology. 4. Make sound inferences about a population based on procedures performed on sample data. 5. Use appropriate formulas and/or tables to determine the probability of events occurring using basic probability rules, the binomial probability distribution, and the normal probability distribution. Course Objectives: Development of fundamental statistical methods including applications to business, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering sciences. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Zero-Tolerance for Violence Statement: Lake-Sumter State College has a policy of zero tolerance for violence as stated in College Board Rule Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with Board Rule Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Institutional Information: Once the Add/Drop period passes, students deciding to discontinue class attendance and/or online participation have the responsibility for formal withdrawal by the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawal Deadline: Monday, October 29, 2018 Instructor Policies: If you are caught cheating, you will either fail the assignment/test/quiz or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor. No warning will be given. Late Work/Extensions: All graded discussions, quizzes, and tests/exams must be completed by the specified due dates on the syllabus course calendar; homework stays open and accessible throughout the semester. Due date extensions will not be automatically granted. You must have a valid reason for the extension and be prepared to provide supporting documentation to justify the accommodation. Work not submitted as expected will receive a zero (0) grade. Classroom Etiquette: You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner during any on-site visits, during virtual interactions with the professor and/or your classmates, and when posting to the discussion board. If you post or reply inappropriately to online discussions, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

4 Grading Information: Grading Scale: A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and below Rely only on the course average available in the My Stat Lab Gradebook to reflect your most accurate course grade. Methods of Evaluation: Your grade is based on four components: tests, quizzes and discussions, homework, and a cumulative final exam. Assignment Overview & Grade Breakdown: Category Description Points or % On-site proctored Tests average Quizzes and discussions average Homework average Tests will be taken in a proctored setting at one of LSSC s Learning Centers either on the computer, in paper form, or a mixture of computer and paper. You will need to make an appointment to take your five, equally weighted, on-site tests within the designated week; appointments available most weeks Monday-Saturday. Plan ahead and schedule your test accordingly (more information will be made available in Canvas). Since you are making an appointment to take your test, make-up test requests will not be readily approved. You must have a valid reason for missing your testing appointment and be prepared to provide supporting documentation to justify the accommodation. The two graded discussions (available in Canvas) and nine graded Chapter quizzes (available in My Stat Lab) are equally-weighted, count in the quiz average, and must be completed by the specified due dates on the syllabus course calendar. You will be permitted two attempts per Chapter quiz, with the highest grade counted as a part of your quiz average. Your one lowest grade in this category will be dropped at the end of the semester. Twenty-four (24), equally-weighted, homework assignments will be delivered via My Stat Lab. Homework stays open and accessible throughout the semester. MML homework problems may be completed an unlimited number of times but must be completed correctly at least once for credit. The twenty-four (24) Learn units accompanying the homework assignments contain instructional materials and do not count toward your grade. 65% 10% 10%
