1 HEAD OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION Job description Summary of the Role: The Physical Education department comprises a number of Physical Education (PE) specialists, a wider Games department and many additional external specialist coaches. Pupils from the First to Fifth Year undertake one period of PE per week as well as a full afternoon of Games. Core PE is taught in the Gymnasium, Astroturf, Netball Court, Hall and Studio. Core Physical Education Within Core Physical Education, all pupils have one PE lesson per week. Kingston Grammar School follows the National Curriculum s guidelines, covering the activity areas of Dance, Gymnastics, and Variety of Invasion Games, Summer Sport Activities and Health Related Fitness. Pupils rotate activities every half term. Swimming is also covered each half term for pupils in the First Year. The successful candidate will have full responsibility for the Kingston Borough Sports Programme. Amongst other responsibilities, the candidate will also drive, build and maintain the entire PE Programme, to include developing Schemes of Work, assessment for learning, attainment descriptors and regular INSETS when necessary. Examination Physical Education A-Level: The AQA Physical Education syllabus is currently followed in the Sixth Form. There is a dedicated, teaching room with IT facilities, a Gymnasium, Netball court and an Astroturf area on the main School site, in addition to the facilities at our Ditton Field playing fields. Games A full contribution to our extensive Games Programme is expected. Games lessons take place every afternoon and include a busy and varied programme for all year groups. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to a number of major and minor sports, collaborating with the various Heads of Sports on a weekly basis. Line Management: The Head of PE will be line managed by a member of the School s leadership team, but will be required to work very closely with the Director of Sport. The full Person Specification is below but in particular the successful candidate should: a) Have an excellent level of subject knowledge and able to teach up to A level b) Be able to inspire and engage pupils throughout their learning. c) Be willing and able to contributed to the Games programme d) Commit to after school practices and Saturday sport over all three terms Created: September 2018 Page 1

2 Main Duties and Responsibilities: As the leading subject professional, combining enthusiasm, expertise and energy with a clear sense of vision and first rate administrative skills, the Head of Department is central to the review and development of learning and teaching throughout the school. He or she inspires and motivates the members of the department to share good practice and to aim for the highest standards so that all pupils receive an excellent educational experience. Ensuring a close relationship between departmental development and whole school development is a key element of the role. Key Responsibilities of the Head of PE Leadership: To lead the Physical Education Department To track and monitor pupil achievement and implement interventions where required To lead and monitor all element/s of the Examination PE courses To lead and contribute to both the performance and participation sections of the Co- Curricular Programme; organising/leading appropriate clubs and activities To ensure all pupils take part in regular exercise and are given every encouragement to live an active lifestyle To promote and implement, as appropriate, national or local schemes that promote exercise and health and fitness To foster and support the School's Code of Conduct, guidelines, aims, values and ethos through the PE Programme Communication: To organise the arrangement of teaching groups in consultation with the department and to liaise with the relevant senior leader in all matters concerning the timetable To manage the day-to-day running and co-ordination of the Physical Education department. This role includes the organisation of staff cover when required within the department To run regular Department meetings (in collaboration with the Director of Sport and Assistant Director of Sport) To attend all Heads of Department meetings and communicate issues via these meetings To monitor the condition of the teaching spaces, arrange repairs and other work through the Facilities Manager Administration: To plan, implement, review and develop the curriculum throughout the School. Planning the future development of the subject within the department, according to changes nationally and/or within the School is also vital. To develop new ideas and the introduction of new material in the interests of improving the effectiveness of the department To be fully conversant with national requirements and to deliver those requirements in a stimulating and lively way to all members of the department Created: September 2018 Page 2

3 To complete an annual Head of Department report for the leadership team To ensure all Schemes of Work are up to date for all areas of the subject, including the examination courses and devise and implement, short-term, medium-term and long-term plans for the activity areas within the Core Physical Education programme To organise the induction and supervision of student teachers, newly qualified teachers, all teachers new to the department and those joining the School on a temporary basis To ensure the department has all the required resources and to update resources as required To be responsible for all Health and Safety aspects relating to the PE Department To ensure annual Risk Assessments for all Physical Education activities are completed and submitted to the Health and Safety Advisor To be responsible for the security and safe use of valuable items held by the department and to report to the Facilities Manager any damage to departmental equipment, furniture or fittings To inform the senior leader line managing the department of the request for annual budget requirements and order equipment as agreed To stay abreast of the latest trends in Physical Education teaching through research, discussion with peers, including CPD and INSET To arrange and recommend INSET requirements for other department members To submit all Examination Physical Education Coursework marks to the exam board within the requirements and deadlines To organise External Moderation with the appointed Moderator/s appointed by the exam board The Head of Department is responsible for the following: To be exemplary in carrying out a Teacher s responsibilities. To contribute to the development of the aims, policies and administrative procedures of the School, to attend Heads of Departments meetings and, in discussion with the department, produce and implement the departmental strategic plan in line with the school strategic plan. To manage the departmental budget, ensuring a close link between this and the departmental strategic plan. To participate in the recruitment of subject staff and to delegate teaching and other responsibilities fairly and aptly throughout the department, encouraging and enhancing professional development through advice and support, both generally and through appraisals. To seek to achieve, through collaborative leadership and monitoring, the highest standards across the department of teaching, learning, formative and summative assessment, report and reference writing. 4 To lead the development and review of stimulating, creative and well-resourced schemes of work which aim to inspire intellectual curiosity and develop academic rigour whilst being in tune with the needs and abilities of the pupils. To pay close critical attention to curriculum developments, especially in the subject, communicating these to the department and to senior leaders; to be aware of developments in learning and teaching strategies, particularly those that help to promote independent learning and the imaginative use of ICT. To promote the sharing of good practice within the department; to hold weekly departmental meetings, circulating agendas and ensuring that key decisions and action points are noted in minutes. To ensure that expert advice about curriculum and Higher Education choices in the subject is available to pupils and parents, and to oversee candidates applying to Oxford and Cambridge colleges. To oversee appropriate promotion of the subject through the school website. To review annually: departmental policies, procedures, handbooks and website pages, amending and updating as required. To liaise with other Heads of Departments where appropriate, and engage in cross curricular activities from time to time. To develop positive relations with pupils, parents, teaching and support staff colleagues and the wider community and to represent the school when reasonably required.
