1 Wimberley Lions Club Club President Lonnie Duke Augusta Lane, Wimberley, TX Editor Dan Williams 12 Palmer Lane, Wimberley, TX Katherine Anne Porter School Teacher and Student of the Year Honored Wimberley Lions Club donates $12,050 to Nine Organizations Superintendent Jordan Elliott thanked the Lions Club for all they do for the community and then introduced senior Jackson Demaree who has attended KAPS since his freshman year. Jackson is his class Valedictorian, is President of the Nerds Club, volunteers with the Lions Club as a member of the Leos Club, will be a Lions International Exchange Student this summer and is the recipient of a Lions Scholarship. Ms. Elliott next introduced Carol Harlow who has taught English for 39 years with 13 of those years in Wimberley. Mrs. Harlow, who is a favorite with the students and other faculty members, plans to retire after this year after teaching 3,400 students and grading over 10,000 essays. 2 Page 2 Texas Lions Camp s Director of Development Provides an Update on Camp Former Wimberley Lion writing Spy Novels Many will remember Warren Terry who was a member of the Wimberley Lions Club. He is now working on his third spy novel. I particularly enjoyed The Exchange Student. It takes place in Spain, France, Cuba, Mexico, Wimberley, Austin, and San Antonio. Its fast paced and believable with enough intrigue. His books are available in Kindle format at Amazon for $2.99. Trish Wilson has been with the camp for over four years. She was extremely enthusiastic about the 63-year-old Texas camp for disabled children, that is free of charge for the campers. The 504 acre camp near Kerrville, offers sessions June 3 through August 4 for 200 campers each session that are physically disabled, are blind, deaf, mute, are burn survivors, are Down Syndrome children or are diabetic. The camp receives applications for counselor positions from all over the world, with only the very best being selected. Trish told the Lions about a blind and deaf child, who was able to climb the wall with the help of a counselor and ring the bell from the top. She also told the Lions about a camper with no shoulders, arms or hands that was able to hit a bull s eye with a bow and arrow. Another camper held the bow while he used his foot to pull back and shoot. Trish thanked the Wimberley Lions for having contributed over $82,000 over the past 43 years for the Texas Lions Camp.

4 Page 4 Wimberley Independent School District Support Person of the Year Honored Edible Austin with Leo Fundraiser Jacobs Well Elementary School Principal Linda Land praised Julie Greer for the outstanding job she is doing as an Instructional Aide with the special needs students. Lions President Lonnie Duke presented Julie with a Certificate of Appreciation. Edible Austin gave the Leo's about $400 for showing a movie "Dirt" at the Corral Theatre by soliciting donations from attendees.. The movies tells the story of Earth's most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility. Eight local businesses supported the effort. Tail Twister Entertaining with Poetry Substitute Tail Twister Lion Winston Hudson held a poetry reading contest. Acting judge of the poetry reading contest was Lion Joe Harrison who ruled that Lion Pam Sullivan was the winner.

5 Page 5 Junior High School Academic Challenge place. For the 12 or so years I have been participating, I am always impressed with the depth and breadth of these students knowledge. Road Warriors As the school year comes to an end, Danforth Junior High turns to its Academic Challenge. The Wimberley Lions have proctored this contest and funded the prize money since it was conceived. The students compete to be members of the top five teams of three students. They compete in math, science, English, and government with their whole class watching. Sudden death is used to break ties. As shown below where they are waiting the results. Each months the Lion Road Warriors go clean their designated area and then depending on the number of Lions, they go out and clean other areas. Where to get Information With the Internet becoming a ubiquity, you need to know where you can get info about Lions. Lions Club International is a good source for tutorials, Lion supplies, job descriptions for various Lion positions. The prize money is coveted by the students is $100 to each first place winner, $50 for each second place, and $30 for the third District 2-S3 is our district of over 60 Lions Clubs in and around Austin.
