8 Listen and read the story. Fabulous stories: The Sword in the Stone Sir Hector was a rich knight. He lived in a castle in England hundreds of years ago. He had a son called Kay. A boy called Arthur also lived in the castle. Sir Hector took care of Arthur he gave him food and clothes but he was kinder to his son. A magician called Merlin came to the castle and offered to become a teacher for Kay and Arthur. At first Sir Hector refused Merlin seemed a very strange person! But in the end he agreed, and Merlin started to teach Arthur and Kay. Merlin s lessons often used magic. He changed Arthur into an ant, a fish and a bird to teach him different things about the world. At that time, the king of England died. He had no children, so nobody knew who the next king would be. As he died, he pushed a magic sword into a large stone. Only the next king of England could pull the sword out of the stone. Strong men from all over England came to London and tried to pull the sword from the stone, but nobody could do it. One day, Kay and his father, Sir Hector, went to London for a tournament. When they arrived, Kay realised that he d forgotten his sword. He told Arthur to go and get it. Arthur couldn t find Kay s sword, but he found one buried in a large stone. He pulled the sword from the stone and took it to Kay. Kay knew that it was the magic sword. At first, Kay said that he had pulled the sword from the stone himself and was now king of England. But in the end, he told the truth and Arthur became the new king of England. Explain why these sentences are false. Arthur was Sir Hector s favourite. Arthur s lessons with Merlin were very boring. Kay wanted Arthur to be king of England. 9
