London, KY (606) Fax: (606) Over 255,000 youth are involved in Kentucky s 4-H program. Kentucky ranks in top 10 in several 4-H enrollment categories nationwide. All 120 counties in Kentucky have 4-H programs, and all counties will receive a portion of the support from the Ag Tag Donation program. These funds are split between the county where the funds originated and the Kentucky 4-H Foundation for state level programs. That means half of the Ag Tag donation stays in Laurel County funding programs and activities that teach children and teens about leadership, citizenship, science and technology, communications, public speaking, agriculture, and more. Laurel County 4-H s share for 2017 was $ Laurel County has a TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY to increase participation in this program and financial support for our local 4-H Councils, and benefit programs such as; livestock club, horse club, shooting sports, rabbit and poultry clubs, and even summer camp. We are asking and encouraging farmers when they go to pay their farmers tag license fees to please ASK IF YOU CAN MAKE A $10 DO- NATION TO THE AG TAG FUND. CLUB MEETING/EVENT CANCELLATION POLICY: If school is cancelled in Laurel County the day of a 4-H club meeting and/or event, then the 4-H meeting will be cancelled as well. Making the $10 donation on each farm license plate at renewal is an excellent opportunity for our agricultural community to support the youth of our community and help fund the programs that can make a lasting difference in their lives. 2 School Club Highlights Here are some pics from Mrs. Hoskins 4th grade class at Hazel Green Elementary. This month s club lesson was speeches and demonstrations. The students had five minutes to write a minute speech about a topic that they drew out of a box. They got points depending on the amount of time they talked. The team with the most points won the game. Many students said it helped them see that the process of writing a speech wasn t as bad as they thought and writing with a team made them feel more confident. We ve had some great speeches this month! Students at Hazel Green Elementary worked on a STEM challenge during their February club meeting that consisted of building a sled from pipe cleaners, tape and straws. Students tested their sled designs at the end of the challenge to see how well they did. They also had the chance to adjust their designs and race their sleds at the end of the challenge. We re focusing on cooking and crafts this year in the Spark Club (youth ages 8-18) and we still have room for new members. We meet every third Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be Thursday March 13th at 5:30 pm at the extension office. Join us as we create some great artwork using beads. Youth in the Mini 4-H Club (ages 5-7) made melting snowman slime as their activity while learning about science and chemical reactions. The next club meeting will be Thursday, March 15th at 5:30 pm at the extension office. We ll be making birdhouses in order to get ready for spring.

3 The IMPAKT club had a SWEET month by making chocolate covered strawberries. They then delivered them to the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter hoping to brighten someone else's day! Call and sign up to join our Teen IMPAKT Club. This club meets monthly and is always accepting new members. The 24 Carrots 4-H horse club met with farrier Dave Steele and veterinarian Phillip Bundy to discuss proper foot care, Coggins, and vaccines this month. This club typically meets the 4th Thursday of the month at 6pm. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions and check us out on Laurel County 4H Horse Club.

11 KENTUCKY VOLUNTEER FORUM Laurel County had 9 volunteers attend the 2018 KY Volunteer Forum. Without the dedication of these local volunteers students would miss out on so many wonderful opportunities. A big thank you goes out to There s nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. James Doolittle (Not pictured is Tara Hall Poultry Club Leader) Healthy Recipes for Kids: Pizza Pockets 2 teaspoons cornmeal ounce package refrigerated pizza dough 2 hotdogs, preferably nitrate free, quartered lengthwise and chopped into small cubes 1/4 cup jarred tomato or spaghetti sauce 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Directions 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Sprinkle the cornmeal on a large cutting board and roll out the pizza dough to a 10x14 rectangle. Using a pizza wheel or large knife, cut into 4-5x7 rectangles. 2. Working with 1 sheet at a time, place a rectangle so the long side is facing you. Spoon one-quarter of the chopped hot dogs onto the center of the rectangle, leaving a 1 inch border around the filling. Top the hot dogs with 1 tablespoon tomato sauce and 4 tablespoons shredded mozzarella. Moisten the edge of the dough all around and fold the rectangle in half lengthwise over the filling. Pinch the edges together to secure. Set on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough rectangles, hot dogs, sauce and cheese. Cut 2 or 3 small vents in the top o each pocket. Bake until browned and bubbling, about 15 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
