4010 King Springs Road Smyrna, GA August 17, 2018 Volume 2, Issue 7 Wildcat Weekly MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL GILLIHAN Good Friday Afternoon Wildcats! What a great 2 nd full week of school. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and passionate teachers at our school. I marvel at what they do for our students each day and how much time and energy they put into their classes. There is rarely a time when there are not teachers on our campus. Just this weekend teachers were wanting to come in and prep for the next week and of course we opened the building so they could. This week I was able to go into several of our classrooms and after each I left energized and excited wanting to go back in and participate in the engaging lessons that were unfolding in front of our students. I love seeing students actively learning and being inspired to dream of their future. Last Friday, I forgot how old I am!! My 8 th grade intramural students invited me to participate in their basketball game. I thought since I used to play it would be fun! Well, it was fun! However, when they suggested we play full court, I should have taken my time with my answer and stated, Nah, I m fine with half. But no, I quickly said, Sure, Let s go! OMG. I so had to stay back on defense several times just to get my breath. It was a great experience, and I have decided I will be back!! I think I will visit 6 th /7 th intramurals next time and work my way back to the 8 th. I wanted to thank all of our Car-rider parents for being patient as we have been working to get the afternoon dismissal ironed out. You all have been great, and I do appreciate it. This past week we have been getting everyone off campus by 4:35 each day which is outstanding. I want to suggest that you purchase a small umbrella for your child to have in their book bag just in case a shower comes up in the afternoons. Rain always slows Atlanta down! I also wanted to make sure you are aware of our Give to Griffin campaign that is going on at this time. I sat down with the Foundation and expressed to them what I feel is a major need for Griffin and that is technology. We are blessed to have several laptop carts as well as ipads and computer labs. However, it would be so beneficial for our students if every time they went into their English Language Arts (ELA) class they would be able to use a laptop to research, write, edit, proof, as well as assess. With state assessments going on line, it would be advantageous for our students to be familiar with taking assessments as well as typing on computers. So please consider giving to this great effort. Every dollar matters and every child deserves a chance to have technology in the classroom. Thank you all for coming out to Open Houses. Remember that you are always welcome to stop by and see me even if there is no open house. 3 August 24, We are back to school in the swing of things! It s time for our Back to School dance sponsored by the Griffin Middle School PTSA. PTSA is looking for volunteers! If you are interested in helping to make a wonderfully fun event for our students, please contact PTSA President: awbunkley@comcast.net. If you sign up your child to become a member of the PTSA, along with signing up themselves, at the upcoming Open Houses the $10 membership fee covers the $10 to go to the dance. Parents and teachers are welcome to volunteer! Fall School Picture Day August 24 Wildcat Students! If you are interested in joining a school club, many are beginning to meet. Visit the Griffin Middle School club webpage for a current list of clubs being sponsored by Griffin staff. There is quite a variety that cover many student interests. Be sure to complete and turn in required forms by the deadlines. Thank you for making a Greater Griffin by being involved with your school!

Mrs. Wilson s 8th grade social studies classes are working on a mini-project that aligns with the Georgia Standard for describing Georgia s geography and climate. Students took a learning styles assessment during the first week of school, and they had a choice of five projects for their mini-project. Every learning style had at least one option. Students chose the project that best fit their learning style. Many chose to do something art-related, but one group has done a commercial.

Friendly Reminder As our school has grown since last year, and we were lucky enough to recently earn three additional teachers, who will start on Monday, August 20. Yay! As a result, some student schedules will be adjusted to balance classes and decrease the student-to-teacher ratio. These students will receive revised schedules on Monday, August 20th. 7 #GriffinReads30 The Workshop Model At the beginning of the school year, Griffin implemented a new reading literacy program called, Griffin Reads 30, for our 6/7 grade students. The program came about to support our school-wide strategic plan to increase student reading & writing achievement by 5% and to create a reading culture that produces life-long independent readers. Additionally, reading literacy will improve student vocabulary to increase academic achievement in their content area classes (ELA, science, SS, math). Griffin Reads 30 takes place for 30 minutes during 6/7 homeroom at the end of the school day. Using the Workshop Model (see graphic to the left), students are introduced to a vocabulary or reading strategy, the strategy is modeled by the teacher, students practice the model with their choice reading, and the teacher confers with students to reinforce strategies. Thank you for supporting Griffin Reads 30! Griffin Reads 30 has been successful the first two week of school in getting students into the library to check-out books. Many of the students have visited the library with a teacher, but have continued to visit on their own afterwards.

Reminder: Competitive Reading Club starts Monday, August 20th in the Learning Commons from 4:30-5:30 This is how we read at Griffin...

A BIG thank you to Bay Equity Home Loans for hosting a cook-out for our teachers and staff today! We were able to enjoy burgers and hot dogs, along with a duty-free lunch, thanks to our awesome administrators. What an awesome surprise and treat after a week of very successful Open House nights. So appreciated! Fabulous Friday!! Thursday October 4, PM We will once again host a Hispanic Heritage Night at Griffin Middle School! This event has been extremely successful and wellattended in the past. It is a celebration enjoyed by the entire Griffin community. The Hispanic Heritage Night will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 6 PM. Our planning committee is seeking food donations representing Hispanic cultures. An informational flyer will be sent home soon with your student that will outline the night s festivities. There will be cultural entertainment, speakers, and student artwork on display. Our annual piñata raffle is always a favorite with parents, teachers, and students! Please place this date on your calendar and plan on attending!

Are you interested in traveling the world? If so, come join us on August 27th at 6:00 in the Griffin Theater to learn about exciting travel opportunities through 2020 Spring Break. We have trips planned to the Galapagos Islands/Ecuador, Spain and South Africa! Students interested in the Yearbook Club, please stop in the library learning commons for a club form. This year s club is sponsored by: Lori Quintana lori.quintana@cobbk12.org Selinda Proctor selinda.proctor@cobbk12.org Our first meeting is Friday, August 24, 2018 in the library learning commons lab at 8:15 am. All students must have their club forms turned in by Monday, August 20th due to publishing and yearbook ordering deadlines. Come join this exciting club that is a journey in learning a new language American Sign Language.
