1 BADMINTON TOURNAMENTS Davison School hosted their annual badminton tournament on Saturday, April 1 beginning at 9:00 a.m. They competed against teams from Neudorf, Grayson and Wolseley in both singles and doubles competitions. It was great to see our gym filled with spectators cheering on our players and we extend a big thank you to all of our Davison athletes for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie! A special thank you to all of the volunteers for making our tournament the success it was. Thank you to Mr. Dohms for helping to make the trophies, and to the SCC and parent volunteers for organizing and working the canteen. Thank you also to staff member Mrs. Krieger who came to supervise during the tournament. Without the help of our volunteers, our badminton tournament would not be the success it always is! We know the students appreciate the efforts of their coaches Mrs. Lechner, Mrs. Kirschman, Miss Lang and Mr. Koval for taking the time to teach them the skills of badminton. Our badminton teams are on the go! Team members had the opportunity to attend the annual North Valley Badminton Tournament held in Neudorf on April 11 and will wrap up the season at the Wolseley tournament on Friday, April 28. All players should be proud of themselves as they played well and put on an excellent display of sportsmanship at Neudorf, and we expect nothing but the best from them on Friday at Wolseley. Following are the results from the Neudorf tournament watch for results of the Wolseley tournament in the next newsletter: Neudorf Tournament Girls Singles; B Side Gold Madison C. Girls Singles B side Bronze Annabell P. Girls Doubles A Side Bronze Emily Y. & Madison C.

2 Pink Shirt Day, sponsored by the Red Cross, to take a stand against bullying was celebrated on April 12 at Davison School. Thank you to the SRC for recognizing this as an important day and encouraging students and staff to do so as well. Today I have an obligation. No longer will I be silent if you need help. Silence is participation. I refuse to participate in the problem. We re all different, but we all deserve respect. If you need help, come to me. If I think you need help, I will get involved. PLANETS.STARS...OUR UNIVERSE On April 3 and 5, Mr. James Edgar visited the classrooms to share his passion and knowledge about our solar system. By using a roll of paper, he demonstrated the distance of the planets from the sun on a scale the students could relate to. He talked about the phases of the moon and the constellations and how they change in the night sky. Students received a star finder and moon chart to take home. Who knows, he may have planted a seed and we could have budding astronomers in our midst. Thank you Mr. Edgar!

3 Approximately once every 2 months our students get together in their family groups to celebrate one of the 5 values adopted by the GSSD. On April 13 the value of Respect was celebrated. Students gathered in their family groups and the family group committee talked to the students about showing the value of respect towards our Earth. Some of the family groups then proceeded outside with garbage bags to clean our school yard while the remaining groups completed the carbon footprint activity. Half way through the period, they exchanged places, giving all the opportunity to take part in both activities. What an opportunity to be respectful towards our planet! AUTHOR VISIT Author Trina Markussan will share her book Good Morning, Sunshine with students in Kn. 3 on May 5. This book highlights six mindfulness tools that can be used both at home and school and students will be given the opportunity to purchase a copy of her book for $ FORMAL DAY Thank you for answering our call for muffins for our breakfast program. We know we can always count on our Davison families to see us through, no matter the situation! Throughout the year, we receive a number of donations from Davison families. Whether it be books for the library, skates/helmets for our skating program, food for our breakfast program or items for the art room, we thank you for your continued thoughtfulness and for thinking of us! Our students were decked out in their finest attire. Formal Day proved to be very popular with our students and staff members. The boys were handsome and the girls were beautiful!! Thank you to the SRC for sponsoring this spirit day. Mighty Girls Club members have been discussing and researching women who have made important contributions to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. They participated in STEM challenges such as building the tallest cup tower and constructing a boat that can hold the most rocks. In the next few weeks, check out their posters hung around the school to learn about some smart, hard-working women in STEM.

4 Your attendance at student conferences is always appreciated! We value this time to celebrate your child s learning and growth not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. If at any time throughout the school year you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to call your child s teacher. Jump Rope for Heart kicked off on Monday, April 10 with an assembly in the gym. The students were given their permission sheets and pertinent information. This year s Jump Rope for Heart will be held on May 5. Although the organization and paper work for Jump Rope takes a lot of time and effort, it is well worth it. Thank you to the staff organizing committee for making sure everything will run without a hitch! The months are flying by way too quickly! Before we know it the end of the school year will be upon us! To help you plan your home and work schedules, please mark the following important dates on your calendar: May 5 Jump Rope for Heart May 5 Author visit (Kn.-Gr. 3) May 22 Victoria Day May 23 P.D. 5 Our monthly awards are based on the five values adopted by all schools in the Good Spirit School Division. The five values are: We Learn, We Nurture, We Are Responsible, We Belong and We Respect. Both students and staff strive to adhere to these values. Students receiving awards in April are: Kindergarten Jazer S. for showing the value of Learning. Jazer has grown in big ways so far in kindergarten. He has reached our goal of knowing all of his letters and letter sounds. He is also doing a fantastic job of learning and recognizing sight words in the classroom and in books. He is always willing to take risks when printing and spelling and is becoming a great author. Keep up the hard work, Jazer. Your literacy skills will continue to grow! Gr. 1/2 Addison B. for showing all five values. Addison sets a great example for her fellow classmates by always being ready for class and being the best listener she can be. She does neat work and always works hard to do her best. She is a great friend to others by helping them and including them in what she is doing. She treats her teachers and classmates with respect and caring. Way to go, Addison! Gr. 2 Mason L. for showing all five values. Mason consistently demonstrates all 5 school values. He is a kind, caring and considerate classmate and student. He is eager to learn new things and always gives his very best effort to his work. Mason is always organized and ready to learn. He sets an excellent example for his classmates to follow. Keep up the excellent work, Mason! Gr. 3/4 Conner Z. for showing all five values. Conner s demonstration of all five values has grown a lot over the course of this year. He is a kind and thoughtful classmate, he is responsible for hi actions, he is honest and trustworthy. He cares about doing his very best work in all subjects and works hard to make sure he is thinking, understanding, and learning. He does extra practice at home too! On the playground, he makes the choice to stay out of conflict situations. I'm very proud of the student and person you are, Conner! Keep up the awesome work and attitude! Gr. 4/5 Zachren R. for showing all five values. Congratulations to this fine, young gentleman! All five values is a great undertaking but Zachren has done a great job from the very beginning of the year. He is always on task and tries very hard at everything he does at school. He is diligent with trying his best and is very respectful. He is a very important part of our classroom! Bravo, and keep up the good work. Gr. 501 Colton L. for showing the values of Responsibility & Learning. Colton always comes into the classroom with a positive attitude and readiness to learn. He takes his time on his school work and makes sure it is always neat. He makes sure his homework is completed on time. Keep up the great job, Colton! Gr. 600 Tiffany K. for showing the value of Responsibility. Tiffany is the type of student that if you don t actively look for her in the classroom, you man not realize she is there. This is because she is always on task working quietly. She ensures that her assignments are always finished and strives to meet classroom and school expectations. Keep up the dedicated effort, Tiffany! Gr. 601 Annabell P. for showing all five values. Annabell does a great job of always having her supplies ready and waiting to learn. She always has her work done and ensures that it is done to the best of her ability. She is an unbelievable story writer and hopefully will use these talents in her future endeavors. Thank you to Quiznos proprietors, Steven Holowaty and Morgan Rieger, for donating coupons each month to our award winners.
