Ohio State University Extension 4-H Youth Development Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center 2201 Fred Taylor Drive Columbus, OH To: 2015 Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp Registrants From: Hannah K. Epley, Director Date: June 15, 2015 Re: Leadership Camp Arrival Information Phone Fax Congratulations for receiving your county s nomination to attend the 2015 Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp, and thank you for successfully completing your registration! Each and every Leadership Camp staff member is excited to deliver another fun, challenging, and educational leadership skill development experience to our participants. Participants of this year s Leadership Camp will meet some of the finest 4-H members we have in Ohio and be introduced to a set of leadership skills that will prepare you to make a positive impact in your home club, county, community, and school. This memo s purpose is to help you prepare for your experience by providing you with guidelines and suggestions about what you should bring and how to be ready for Leadership Camp. Arrival Guidelines Please arrive to the Recreation Hall at 4-H Camp Ohio at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 5, Arriving early poses no advantage, as registration will not be prepared to open until after 2:00 PM. Please do not arrive any later than 2:30 PM. The Rec Hall is an open-air pavilion located next to the basketball court when you drive straight into 4-H Camp Ohio. There will be signs and even possibly people lined up in or near the Hall. The address for 4-H Camp Ohio is Camp Ohio Road, St. Louisville, OH That address works relatively well in Google Maps and other online map applications. GPS units using that address often get you close but not exactly to the camp s main gate. Note that the main gate is on Camp Ohio Road, east of Purity Road and west of Rocky Fork Road. Written driving directions are on the camp s Web site: Once you arrive to camp, please find the end of the registration line. We will process everyone as quickly as possible, but note that personal attention must be given to each participant. Thank you for your patience. Parents dropping off participants should schedule at least an hour for the registration and move-in. Once the participant is assigned their cabin, parents are welcome to depart. Participants will be asked to turn in their car keys and mobile phones during registration (or as soon as move-in is complete). These items will be labeled and stored securely by the Leadership Camp director s staff for the week. Should participants require access to these items they may discuss their needs with Hannah or Becca. Car keys and mobile phones discovered by any staff member during Leadership Camp will be seized and submitted to the director for safekeeping. All keys and mobile phones will be returned to participants on July 9.

Departure Information Leadership Camp will dismiss at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 9, Participants will not be able to leave prior to this time. Parents are encouraged to arrive to 4-H Camp Ohio between 10:30 AM and 10:45 AM, and should note that Leadership Camp participants will not be permitted to depart before 10:30 AM even if a parent has arrived to camp. The closing program of Leadership Camp is a special event, developed and delivered by participants themselves, and should not be missed by any participants. Participants who drove themselves will receive their mobile phones and car keys after the closing program concludes. In addition to prohibiting early departures, Leadership Camp also prohibits mid-camp departures and returns of all participants. Once a participant arrives to Leadership Camp at 2:00 p.m. on July 5, they are expected to remain at 4-H Camp Ohio with Leadership Camp until 10:30 AM on July 9.
Required Form The 4-H Camp Ohio Health and Permission Form Accompanying this document is the 4-H Camp Ohio Health and Permission Form. This form must be completed and physically gripped in the hands of each participant when they arrive to the Leadership Camp registration desk. No participant will be able to attend Leadership Camp without the complete form (four pages, two signatures) being submitted at the time of registration. Yes, you also need to include a picture with the form! This means: The complete form must be surrendered at time of registration make a personal copy for your records prior to arrival. Do not transmit in any way (postal mail, scan and , fax, etc.) to the State 4-H Office or state 4-H staff. (It will be shredded immediately upon receipt.) Do not transmit in any way (postal mail, scan and , fax, etc.) to your county extension office or to your county 4-H professional. Do not send this form to your physician, as there is no need for a physician signature. Medications All medications, prescription and over-the-counter, must be stored and administered by the 4-H Camp Ohio nurse. Very few exceptions to this policy and only in the most grievous of cases would allow any medication to remain with the participant. Both the camp nurse and the Director of Leadership Camp must approve any exception to this policy. A doctor s note attesting to the life threatening nature of the condition that would require immediate access to a medication would aid in the exception granting process. This policy particularly applies to self-injectable epinephrine devices. All medication discovered by any staff member will be seized and submitted to the camp nurse for storage and administration. Once the participant and the nurse agree upon the medication schedule, we kindly request that participants adhere to that schedule. Counselors are willing to assist with reminders about medications. Contacting 4-H Camp Ohio in the Event of a Family Emergency Parents and family members who need to make emergency contact with Leadership Camp participants should call or Leadership Camp offers a busy program, and participants will be dispersed throughout the camp s supervised activity areas throughout the day and evening hours. Contacting the numbers above allow for Camp Ohio and Leadership Camp staff members to work together to connect with the participant as efficiently as possible. In the event of a family emergency please allow us to help you.
About the Leadership Camp Program and What to Look Forward to The 2015 Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp will provide you with the opportunity to meet and learn from 4-H ers like you from across Ohio. You will live with a cabin group (all-female or all-male), and you will participate in Leadership Camp programs and activities with a program group (mixed male and female). By design, your sleeping assignments are randomized, so you will get to know some excellent participants and counselors who you have not met previously. However, we want you to have a say in what activities you will be assisting to plan throughout camp, which is why you completed a survey along with your registration form indicating this information! Leadership Camp has a defined set of objectives for its participants, and learning through group interaction, personal and team challenge, and reflection are at the core of all activities. Leadership Camp takes the familiar camp experiences and turns them into challenging learning exercises. While 4-H is a challenge by choice environment, every Leadership Camp participant will participate in and contribute to every camp activity with her/his program group. For example, every Leadership Camp participant will be encouraged to join her/his program group during the Courage (at the High Ropes Course) and the Initiative (at the Climbing & Zipline Tower) activity sessions. If any participant wholly incapable of joining those activities, s/he will still have an important ground-based role with her/his program group by assisting instructors with the safety operations and supporting the remainder of the program group who are proceeding through the activity. Every participant will be encouraged to confront their personal fears in the safe and supportive spaces provided by these activities, and while each participant s personal choice will be respected, their contribution to their program group during those activities will be expected. Every person always has something to contribute to his/her group; therefore nobody sits on the sidelines. In addition to the activities in the example above, our program also utilizes a variety of personal challenges each with a leadership skill development twist. For example, the Discipline session will allow for Shooting Sports to be seen through a new lens, and the Trust session on the Team Challenge course will provide you with ideas about your own ability to work with others. Our Understanding Self & Others and the Motivation sessions also provide their own unique take on these pivotal leadership skills. When you put everything together Understanding Self & Others, Motivation, Discipline, Initiative, Courage, and Trust each Leadership Camp participant will leave camp with a renewed vision for their role as a leader and a catalyst for positive change within their home 4-H club, county, community, and school. Bring your best attitude, your open mind, and a pure heart, and Leadership Camp will give you an experience that will foster goodness throughout your life, your work, and your play. The staff of 2015 Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp is an enthusiastic and dedicated team of young and young-at-heart adults who strive to bring you the best possible Leadership Camp program and participant experience. We look forward to meeting you when you arrive to 4-H Camp Ohio!
Thanking Leadership Camp Sponsors Nationwide and Farm Credit Mid-America have generously sponsored the 2015 Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp. Their support has enabled Leadership Camp to be offered at a nominal cost to all participants, allowing more family and county funds to remain available for local 4-H activities. We encourage every Leadership Camp participant to write a note (or card or letter) of appreciation to each of our sponsors. Please include your home address within your message or on envelope so that a reply can be sent directly to you. The thank-you messages can be sent to the State 4-H Office for prompt forwarding using this address: Ohio 4-H State Leadership Camp Sponsor Appreciation 2201 Fred Taylor Drive 417 Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center Columbus, OH Publicizing Delegates Success Counties, clubs, and families wishing to publicly share their 4-H ers success as a delegate to Leadership Camp can use the press release template available at under 2015 Leadership Camp Press Release Template.
