1 The MADISON MESSENGER Newsletter for the Parents and Students of James Madison Elementary School 2302 David Avenue Sheboygan, WI Madison Families, The Madison Messenger is published monthly and can be found on our school s website! M a y It is hard to believe that we have come upon the end of the school year. The year has seemed to fly by. I can t be more proud of how hard our students worked this school year and the growth they made has been outstanding. Student success is a community success. It takes everyone s part, students, teachers, parents, and family for a student to reach their full potential. This school year we asked our students to Strive for Excellence by doing their P.A.R.T. (Perseverance, Acceptance, Responsibility, and Teamwork). The students did their best to meet these core values. Thank you for doing your part. With the start of summer it does not necessarily mean that the educational process for our students is on hold until the fall. For some of our students they will be attending summer school for additional support or further educational enrichments. For other students it is so important that they continue reading at their level and practicing their math. Students that don t continue on their work can slip back and it will take weeks for the student to get back at the same levels as they ended this school year. As parents, please have the students read a book or two this summer, also please take time to read a book to them. As we end the school year we need to wish good luck to our 5 th grade students as they move on to Middle School. We will certainly miss our students but at the same time we are confident we have prepared them for the next step in their lives. For those families that will no longer have children at Madison I would like to thank you for all that you did to help in your child s education and for helping make Madison a great school. Our school district will be offering free breakfast and lunch for any students between the age of 4-18 at Madison. This opportunity will be starting June 20th Monday Thursday until July 28th. Breakfast is offered from 7:45-8:15 and lunch is offered from 11:45-12:15. This is a great opportunity for student to get a free healthy breakfast and lunch. Our Meet and Greet will be August 31st from 5:00-6:00 and the first day of school on September 1st. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our Madison families for making this a great school year, and making our school the best it can possible be. Have a safe a wonderful summer! We would like to thank our James Madison student council members parents for all of your support this year. We appreciate the extra transportation and time you provide your child which allows him or her to be a student council member! Student Council Recognition Our Student Council members will be recognized for their participation and dedication to our school at assembly on Thursday, June 9 th beginning at 9:15a.m. We had a group of hard working members who brought many activities to our school this year including: The School Store, PBIS Family Treasures Night, courtyard and playground clean ups, a Candy Cane Gram sale to benefit the Sheboygan County Humane Society and Children s Hospital, Cool Tool lessons, Spirit Dress Up Days, Ticket Trade Days, a school dance party, May Day baskets for our neighbors, and Hallway Helpers. Our student council also raises funds to support a James Madison scholarship. Thank you to all Student Council members for your commitment to our school and community! PBIS at Madison James Madison Elementary School utilizes the Positive Behavior and Interventions Support framework to maximize academic success and provide a safe learning environment for all students. Our Eagle Expectations encourage students to: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. PBIS Student Learning Objective: Last year the James Madison PBIS team set a goal to increase students safe choices and reduce the number of office discipline referrals involving physically aggressive behaviors. Our goal is: During the school year, students will engage in safe school behaviors so that 85% or more of all K-5 students (not to include self contained classroom population) do not receive an office discipline referral in the areas of: Minor Physical Contact, Major Fighting, and Major Physical Aggression. At this time, 88% of all K-5 students have NOT received an ODR in these areas. Parent Volunteers Are Needed! The end of the school year is quickly approaching which means our 4 th Quarter All School Field Day Incentive will be here soon! Parent volunteers are needed to help us run the Field Games on Wednesday, June 8 th from 9:30-11:00a.m. If you re able to help out, please complete the attached sign up sheet and return it to the office or call Sue or Donna in the office at Our parent volunteers are an important part of this event and very much appreciated. This is always a fun way to wrap up the school year and celebrate James Madison students positive behavior. The back up activity will be BINGO. Volunteers would not be needed for BINGO. Thank you! Monthly Assembly: Our next assembly celebrating Positive Behaviors at Madison is on Thursday, June 2 nd at 2:50 pm. Parents are welcome to join us for our monthly assemblies celebrating positive behaviors at James Madison. 1 st Grade will be presenting a Cool Tool about community and bike safety. Officer Dustin Fickett of the Sheboygan Police Department will be talking with us about bicycle safety. The Traveling Eagle Trophy will be awarded to the classroom that has received the most staff nominations for being respectful of all adults. Classroom teachers will acknowledge 2-3 students who do an exceptional job following expectations with a PBIS Star Student Award. Families are acknowledged for promoting Eagle Expectations at home. We will also be singing our new school song: Striving for Excellence written by Dr. Griffith and our 5 th grade students. Cool Tool Lessons: Cool Tool Lessons are taught each Thursday during assembly or in the classroom. May Cool Tools focused on bus expectations, being respectful in public and community safety. PBIS at Home: If you re looking for ways to encourage positive behaviors at home this summer, check out the PBIS Home Matrix. Try talking with your family about expectations and remember these PBIS behavior tips:
3 Try to give your child 5 positive acknowledgements for every 1 negative redirection. Give clear, specific, positive directions. Instead of saying, stop running, try saying: always walk. Praise expected behavior. Set reasonable limits. Be consistent, yes means yes and no means no. Set the example, actions speak louder than words. Have patience and have fun! Acknowledgements: Congratulations to Mr. Schwalbe s class for earning the April Traveling Trophy for Playground Expectations. The class celebrated with an ice cream party.
