3 Did You Know? The Oviedo City Council recognized Edward Grillo for his achievement as the first place winner of the State of Florida High School Tech Speech & Research Contest. The Able Trust Florida High School High Tech Program (HSHT) sponsored a research and speech contest for its student participants for fiscal year The contest had three levels of competition: local, regional, and state. The winner of each local contest competed in a regional competition against other local winners. Following regional competition, the winners advanced to the state finals which was held June 21, 2018, at the Able Trust Board of Directors meeting in Tallahassee. The goals of the HSHT Speech Contest were to: Develop research, public speaking, and communication skills of students which are critical to successful employment and self-advocacy. Introduce students to policy topics relevant to all Floridians. Edward Grillo is a junior at Oviedo High School, but will be graduating early with this year s seniors because of his work ethic, drive, and overachieving. His speech was titled Doing Good Deeds for Others to Make the World a Better Place. 3

4 The Chief s Corner You Are Invited to a Party As Chief of Police, I recognize that for law enforcement to be effective, it must have the support of the community it serves. This is the reason my agency adopts a community policing philosophy in its dealings with the community. Community policing is partly defined as developing community partnerships and working in a proactive partnership with citizens in identifying and solving community problems. I feel that nothing exemplifies this philosophy more that the National Night Out activities sponsored by this agency each year in October. It gives a chance for police and the community to interact, get to know each other, and sets the stage for strengthening the community and working together. National Night Out is a national annual community-building campaign that for 35 years has promoted police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie and has made our neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Each year, millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide. In 2017, 38.6 million people nationwide participated in activities. Last year's activities in Oviedo included participating events in the neighborhoods of Chapman Cove, Bentley Woods, Riverside Estates, Sanctuary, Live Oak Reserve, Alafaya Woods, Lake Charm, Le Parc, and Little Creek. This year the National Night Out event will be held at a centralized location, and it is free as usual. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 2nd, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Center Lake Park (299 Center Lake Lane, Oviedo, FL). Join us for the party! It is a wonderful way to meet and interact with police officers, police employees, and your neighbors. See police equipment, demonstrations, eat and be merry, and enjoy many other activities. During this evening, the police department brings out the Special Response Team Truck, K-9s, School Resource Officers, Traffic Enforcement Vehicles, and many other items of interest for citizens to check out. Remember, as you take time to interact with the many officers and staff that will be in attendance, don t forget to introduce yourself to other citizens who are in attendance. I will see you there. 6 Oviedo Fire Department Purchases new SCOTT Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Equipped with new technology and advanced safety features, the Oviedo Fire Department recently purchased the newest SCOTT X3 SCBA, making them one of the first in Florida to place this life saving equipment in service. Fire Chief Lars White says, The new self-contained breathing apparatus provides our firefighters with the very best equipment, replacing equipment that was at end of life. We remain grateful the funding was allocated to this extremely important firefighting personal protective equipment. The SCBA provides clean air to the firefighter in a toxic environment so that they can breathe. With all the demands that structural firefighting has, making sure the crews have the tools they need to operate safely is important. After in-service training from the manufacturer and conducting training drills with the new SCBA, the air packs were placed in service. The feedback from the crews has been great regarding the comfort, ease of use, and safety features of the new air packs. September is National Preparedness Month September is recognized as National Preparedness Month which serves as a reminder that we all must take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect us where we live, work, and also where we visit. Your family may not be together if a catastrophe should happen. It is essential to consider how you would receive emergency warnings and how you would get to a safe location. What if traditional lines of communication, such as cell phones, internet, and landlines were not operational? How would your family communicate to let each other know you are safe? 8 Recreation Programs Indoor Cycling - (ages 16 and up) Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6-7pm). Daily rates apply. The first trial class is free! Packages of 20 visits or an unlimited annual option are available for purchase. Pickle Ball - (all ages) This paddle sport combines features of tennis and table tennis and is played indoors at the Gymnasium on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 11am. Call for more information. Adult Basketball - Registration is underway through September 7th or until full. The season begins September 16th. Call for more information. Rock Climbing League - Registration is underway through September 7th or until full. The season begins September 13th. Call for more information. Start Smart Soccer - (ages 3-5) Registration is underway through September 21st or until full. Classes begin October 2nd. Call for more information. SNAP Club - Wednesday, September 12th at Riverside Park from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This program is designed specifically for those with special needs, teenage and up. Participants must be accompanied by a companion. Activities include games, craft time, potlucks, bingo, and more! Call for more information. Homeschool Activity Program - Thursday, September 13th at Riverside Park. This program is a structured exercise program with a monthly theme for children ages 6 to 13 who are home schooled. Pre-registration and pre-payment required. Call for more information. American Red Cross Babysitter Course - Friday, October 12th at Riverside Park. Youth ages 11 to 15 will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care to children and infants. This is a one-day class and space is limited to 10 participants. Call for more information. Family Bingo - Friday, October 5th at Riverside Park. Games start at 6:30pm. Cards are $4 each with a 5 card maximum. Space is limited and all players are admitted on a first come, first served basis. Concession stand will be open for snacks and beverages. Call for additional information. Line Dancing - (ages 18 and up) Tuesday, September 11th at Riverside Park. Learn the basics of line dancing steps and footwork. Call for more information. Training Cudas - (ages 6-13) Registration is underway. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from either 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Swimmers must be a past Barracuda swimmer, have passed a swim test, or have passed Level 5 swim lessons.
