1 Good Monday Morning to you, November 13 th, This Past Week For those of you who did not have to work here on Saturday, I hope you enjoyed the extended weekend as we observed Veterans Day on Friday. I also hope you had a chance to thank a veteran this past weekend for their service, whether it be a spouse, a family member, a friend, and/or a classmate. Here at LATTC there are more than 600 self-identified student veterans. They have added to the rich culture of this campus, and remind us that this college has always welcomed those who served. In fact, when the Frank Wiggins Trade School first opened, one of the needs was to train veterans who had returned from WWI. And it was the many vocational demands of WWII that caused us to expand from the confines of what is now the Abe Friedman Occupational Center and begin to share space with the John Francis Polytechnic High School where we are currently located. We thank all veterans for their service, including students, faculty and staff. We are grateful for what they have given us. On Tuesday, Nancy Stone, the Program Manager of the California Film Commission, which was honored at our Student Benefit Dinner last month, returned the recognition. She put together a professional skills tour for a few of our Digital Media students. DMA Pathway Chair Joe Guerrieri remarked, We got to visit the set of the show Legion that airs on the FX Network and films on The Lot in Hollywood. The production team went out of their way to answer all of the students questions and tell our students about the opportunities that are available to them if they choose to pursue careers in television. I am certain the students will remember this experience for a long time. We are busy connecting several of our Pathways to the good jobs in the entertainment industry.

2 On Thursday, we reached out to veterans as part of our ongoing effort to make drivers aware of the current air bag recall. Many older model vehicles, including a surprising number of cars in our parking lots, contain dangerously defective air bags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission is in the midst of a campaign encouraging drivers of these older cars to have their bags changed out for free. All students and employees should check to see if their vehicle falls under the recall by clicking on the link below. We hosted a news conference right here at LATTC earlier this year to draw attention to this issue. More than 800 folks were already lined up at 8am yesterday (Sunday) as the Care Harbor wristband giveaway took place on campus. For the past few years, Care Harbor, in conjunction with LA County, holds a weekend event where free medical, vision and dental care are given to anyone seeking services. That event will take place this upcoming weekend at the Reef. But in order to gain access to the free care event, people had to secure a wristband this past weekend and we were one of the two locations for the wristband giveaway. Hundreds will be able to access the free care next week.

3 Also this past weekend, the Health Net Youth Summit took place on campus encouraging young people to stay healthy in mind and in body. There were about 600 people on campus engaging with speakers, including NFL Hall of Fame representatives.

4 The Commencement Committee held its initial meeting this past week to begin planning for graduation day Among the discussion topics was the changing of the commencement from Saturday, June 2 nd, in the morning to Tuesday, June 5 th, in the early evening, to avoid the heat and make sure that it no longer conflicts with any final exams. I accepted their recommendation so I would like you to please mark your calendars for Commencement Tuesday, June 5 th. The Committee also came up with possible keynote speakers for this year s event and some suggestions to keep the event under two hours. More information will be distributed as planning continues. The LATTC students Inter-Club Council really needs your help for its Thanksgiving celebration on Tuesday November 21 st. The students are working to collect canned goods, gently used clothes and other donations so they can create some Thanksgiving boxes for student families in need. The ICC leadership has gone around campus and asked departments for help securing donations. If you have anything to give, please place it in the boxes around campus or bring it to the ASO office in Redwood Hall or to the Public Relations office in Juniper Hall ST533. We encourage you to be generous.

5 The giveaway will be part of the Thanksgiving feast for students next Tuesday November 21 st A huge thanks to the LATTC Bookstore for sponsoring the meal.

6 The Week Ahead Today we are hosting more than 100 regional high school principals and staff in Aspen Hall, Room 101. The work is connecting our Pathways deeper into the high schools and middle schools in L.A., thru dual enrollment and alignment. VP of Innovation and Institutional Effectiveness, Leticia Barajas and Dean Michelle Cheang and many of our Pathway faculty and staff will be engaging some of the critical K-12 gatekeepers.

7 We were fortunate to be selected as the host college for the state chancellor s latest video commercial promoting community colleges across California. The film crew will be on campus from Monday through Wednesday with the actual filming taking place this Wednesday, November 15 th. We will be able to use this video to promote our campus, and it shows we are the face of the community colleges state-wide. If you have any questions, please contact David Ysais or Roxanne Romo who are helping to coordinate the shoot. This Thursday we are holding our monthly Day of Dialogue at 1:15pm in TE 107. We will be conducting an Active Shooter Emergency Preparedness drill in the morning, followed by a panel discussion with individuals who have been

8 through an actual experience of an active shooter, from Santa Monica College to San Bernardino. On Friday, November 17 th, our State Senator Holly Mitchell has taken out a Civic Center Permit to hold a constituents roundtable at LATTC about issues with youth services throughout her district. One of the key topics will be access to education and our Trade Tech programs will be a part of the discussion. And for our student showcase for the week, if you take your family to see the movie Thor: Ragnarok, there is an LATTC connection. Most of the intricate costumes in the movie were designed by Mayes Rubeo, who was trained right here at Trade Tech in our fashion program. Below are two articles about her talents in costuming. She dressed divinities such as Thor, Odin, Loki and Hela, and helped give life to places like Asgard and the planet Sakaar. She made, according to a telephone interview, between 2500 and 2700 pieces, including new armor for the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) and an amazing costume for the great villain of the film, Hela (Cate Blanchett), Goddess of Death. Born in 1962, Mayes is one of the most respected designers in the Guild in Hollywood. "Filmmakers such as Zhang Yimou, James Cameron, Mel Gibson and Duncan Jones have been captivated by Rubeo's work, for whom extras' costumes are made with the same passion as that of the stars. Remember that, when you work with students this week. Let s make the next superstars. Note: I haven t taken a vacation other than a couple of long weekends since I have been back from my treatment. But I plan to be away leaving this coming Thursday and returning to work on Wednesday, November 22nd.
