1 Newsletter 26th May General School News Diary Dates Dear Parents/Carers, I can t believe we are already at the end of the half term and that on our return we will only have 33 actual school days left to the end of the academic year. Time is flying by. Tests It s been an extremely busy few weeks with Year 2 and 6 undertaking their SAT s tests. Year 6 coped extremely well with the test conditions and remained very calm and focussed throughout. Year 2 have taken the tests in their stride and also performed extremely well. In June, Year 1 will sit the phonics tests which are completed 1-1 with their class teacher and we make it as fun as possible; the children don t even know they are undertaking a test at all. Results for the KS1 and 2 SATs and phonics test will be given out with your child s report at the end of the school year. Maternity Leave We want to officially wish Ms Booree (Year 3 teacher- Thamesmead) and her husband all of our best wishes and love as she will be leaving on Friday 9th June to begin her maternity leave. They know they are having a baby girl and we can t wait to meet her before the end of term. We are delighted to welcome Ms Dhillon to Thamesmead who is an experienced teacher who has moved down to Greenwich from Birmingham. She will be taking Year 3 until the end of the year and then staying on to teach in KS2 in September. New Mayor On Wednesday I was delighted to attend the inauguration of the new Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor Peter Brooks, who also happenes to be our Chair of Governors. The ceremony took place at the Royal Naval College and the choir from Charlton sang beautifully at the ceremony. Thamesmead children undertook a local area walk as a whole school every day, led by Mr Alfredo.

A big thank you to Ms Laura Baugh our wonderful music teacher who worked so hard to prepare the choir for their performance. Wednesday 24th May. For those who did, they enjoyed having breakfast in the community room. Windrush Charlton now have a bike rack next to the scooter rails, so please take advantage of the extra space and cycle every day! Thamesmead children undertook a local area walk as a whole school every day, led by Mr Alfredo. This was quite logistical challenge with 210 children, but all children from R to Year 6 coped well and worked together as a school community. One Minute Silence National Clean Air day On June 15th we will be taking part in National Clean Air. Just as with Walk to School Week, we want to encourage as many of our pupils and families to walk to school that day. There will be assemblies across both sites for children to learn more about looking after the environment and reducing pollution. Homework The children have worked so hard on their homework projects particularly the creative tasks! I have enjoyed watching what they have brought into school, demonstrating their hard work and dedication. Please ensure that all tasks that your child chooses to complete, particularly maths or literacy, are of a certain quality. For example, if your child completes a literacy task, please make sure that there is a sufficient amount of writing in their books and that their presentation is of a good quality. Travel Plan As part of our Travel Plan, Charlton children were encouraged to scooter or cycle to school on Following the recent tragic events in Manchester on Monday evening, we held a one minute silence with KS2 pupils on Thursday 25th May in line with the rest of the country. We spoke about how rare these attacks are and that if a child is worried that they can speak to an adult. We focused on all the love and support that Manchester and their victims received. International Day International day was due to take place in June, however we are going to postpone the dates until July. After half-term, you will receive a letter with when the event will take place and what we have planned. Thamesmead News Reception Reception had a fantastic time at Greenwich Peninsula Eco Park. It was a great end to our 'What's at the bottom of the garden?' topic, as we held and learnt about lots of different mini-beasts. We even looked at their different body parts under the microscope!

On Thursday 18th May, Year 4 Thamesmead journeyed to the Natural History Museum.

3 Year 5 Year 1 Year 1 loved visiting Stepney Green Farm. The rainy weather didn't stop them enjoying themselves and taking part in the activities. They found out about the different ways in which farms produce food and were able to meet the animals that lived there. Most children tasted different types of leaves and they were all surprised that there were some flowers that you could also too! Year 5 have received their first letter from friends in Spain. We spent some time reading about their interests and then wrote letters back in both English and Spanish. We really enjoyed writing letters to our new pen pals! Year 6 Year 4 As we write this Year 6 are currently having an amazing adventure in Wales. They all arrived in time to go on a night walk and enjoyed some night swimming. On Thursday 18th May, Year 4 Thamesmead journeyed to the Natural History Museum. We explored the human biology section to look at digestion, memory and different types of hormones and then we enjoyed our main event, which was a workshop, 'Cutting Edge'; this was a about teeth. We consolidated learning on the three main types and investigated facts to match images to the correct animal jaws. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the sun shone to make the long journey more enjoyable. The class were a joy to take across London. Well done!

Maths Workshop Thank you to the TWO parents that attended the Maths workshops, they both found the event helpful and informative.

Charlton News Energy Kidz Celebrations It was lovely to see so many parents at our homework celebration event after school.

Year 3 enjoyed making their robots and some of them really went all out with their creative skills! Well done to everyone!

For parents/carers who use Energy Kidz as their after school provider, please ensure that you book your child s place BEFORE 3pm.

4 Maths Workshop Thank you to the TWO parents that attended the Maths workshops, they both found the event helpful and informative. It is however disappointing that more parents did not attend, as maths information and parents meetings are often requested by parents. The children produced so many lovely pieces of work too many for the newsletter but I have included some of them for you to see! Year 3 enjoyed making their robots and some of them really went all out with their creative skills! Well done to everyone! It has been very positive to witness the children enthused about their homework! For parents/carers who use Energy Kidz as their after school provider, please ensure that you book your child s place BEFORE 3pm. Registers are generated at this time and children are collected from classes. If you book after this time, your child will not be picked up from Energy Kidz and instead will be brought to the school office. Please can you avoid this confusion by booking your child s place BEFORE 3PM. If it is an emergency and you have booked after 3pm, you will need to ring Ms. Picton in the office and forward on your confirmation. Thank you very much for your cooperation. Year 1 Year 1 enjoyed their trip to Stepney farm to find more about where food comes from. At the farm, children were given a task of finding out where some food can be found. For example they had to find where the honey, bread and ham came from. In their topic they have enjoyed finding out that bananas don t just come from Sainsbury s, they actually are shipped from hot countries abroad. Their topic question has been Fruit or a vegetable-who wins? Tell your child which is your favourite! Year 2 Year 2 have been enjoying reading the story What is a Penguin to think when he Wakes up Pink? They all worked hard to write their own setting description, focusing on using ambitious adjectives. Well done to Khadija who wrote a fantastic setting.

Boundary Wall The Reception wall and new fence will be completed in the half term. We look forward to seeing the finished product on our return.
