2 Labor Day Garbage Schedule Republic Services will be picking up garbage, yard waste, and recycling on Monday, September 3rd for Oviedo residents whose regularly scheduled service day is Monday. There will be no service interruption due to the Labor Day holiday. Holiday Closure of City Offices City offices will be closed Monday, September 3rd in observance of the Labor Day holiday. 3 The Chief s Corner What Do I Mean By Together We Make a Difference? In every newsletter article I end the article with Together we make a difference. I will talk about this statement in this newsletter article. Did you every wonder how to measure the success of a police department? One can look at the quality of life in the city as the major measure of success. How safe do we feel, low crime rates, low incidents of accidents, traffic safety, and a how much we fear being a victim all come to mind as measures. How a Chief of Police and officers deliver on these measures to a large extent depends on how much community support a police department gets from its citizens. With 71 authorized police officers and over 37,000 citizens living in the city, the most pairs of police eyes that can be looking for criminal and traffic violations at any one time is 71. Where citizens become involved in watching out for each other and reporting suspicious activity, traffic violations, and other safety concerns, it is possible to have more than 37,000 pairs of eyes working together to make a difference. In Oviedo, many times a day the police department receives calls from, or personal contact with, citizens who report criminal activity, suspicious activity, speeders, aggressive drivers, and a many other behaviors that impact the quality of life in the city. When a crime occurs, witnesses readily come forward to work with the police in investigating and prosecuting the crime. Without this high level of citizen support, the police department would not be able to give the high level of service to its citizens it does. Everyday, officers are approached by citizens who thank them for their service and this motivates them even more to continue to deliver quality service. So there you have it in its most simple form. You, the people who live and work in the city, are the ones who deserve most of the credit for the quality of life in the city and the success of the police department. The police department could not be as effective as it is without your involvement in watching out for each other and interacting with the police department to make a difference. 5 Recreation Programs Indoor Cycling - (ages 16 and up) Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6-7pm). Daily rates apply. The first trial class is free! Packages of 20 visits or an unlimited annual option are available for purchase. Pickle Ball - (all ages) This paddle sport combines features of tennis and table tennis and is played indoors at the Gymnasium on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 11am. Call for more information. Adult Flag Football - Registration is underway through August 30th or until full. The season begins September 9th. Call for more information. Adult Basketball - Registration is underway through September 7th or until full. The season begins September 16th. Call for more information. Rock Climbing League - Registration is underway through September 7th or until full. The season begins September 13th. Call for more information. Start Smart Soccer - (ages 3-5) Registration is underway through September 21st or until full. Classes begin October 2nd. Call for more information. SNAP Club - Wednesday, September 5th at Riverside Park from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This program is designed specifically for those with special needs, teenage and up. Participants must be accompanied by a companion. Activities include games, craft time, potlucks, bingo, and more! Call for more information. Homeschool Activity Program - Thursday, September 6th at Riverside Park. This program is a structured exercise program with a monthly theme for children ages 6 to 13 who are home schooled. Preregistration and pre-payment required. Call for more information. American Red Cross Babysitter Course - Friday, October 12th at Riverside Park. Youth ages 11 to 15 will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care to children and infants. This is a oneday class and space is limited to 10 participants. Call for more information. Family Bingo - Friday, October 5th at Riverside Park. Games start at 6:30pm. Cards are $4 each with a 5 card maximum. Space is limited and all players are admitted on a first come, first served basis. Concession stand will be open for snacks and beverages. Call for additional information. Line Dancing - (ages 18 and up) Tuesday, August 28th at Riverside Park. Learn the basics of line dancing steps and footwork. Call for more information. Training Cudas - (ages 6-13) Registration begins September 4th. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from either 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Swimmers must be a past Barracuda swimmer, have passed a swim test, or have passed Level 5 swim lessons. Call for more information. Splash Zone Birthday Party - Registration is now underway. These fill up quickly, so do not delay until summer. Schedule your party today! Register at the Gymnasium and Aquatic Facility. Call for more information. Aqua Zumba - (all ages) Make a splash with Aqua Zumba! This low-impact, high-energy class happens at the Oviedo Aquatic Facility on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Drop-ins are welcome. Call for more information. 5
