2 Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for the 2008 Haywood County 4-H clubs and programs. We have exciting programs coming up and can use all the help we can get, especially if you love the outdoors and helping kids. Spring Break Programs Call the Extension Office to sign up Keep an eye out for these programs in the Mountaineer Newspaper Fishing Day Monday April 14 th, Haywood County 4-H will be headed out to Daniel Boone Scout Camp for a great day of trout fishing and fun. The cost is $5 and the van will be leaving at 8:30 AM. You must bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Fishing gear and bait will be supplied but your please bring your own if possible. Fly fishing lessons will also be provided for those interested. If you re 16 or older you will need a NC fishing License. Adventure Day Wednesday April 16 th, 4-H will go on an outdoor adventure in the Pisgah National Forest. We will climb a 6,000 ft. mountain, hike to some awesome waterfalls, and see some cool wildlife. It will start off with a talk from the man who helped build the mountains-to-sea trail, the trail we will hike on that will eventually extend from Clingman s Dome to the Outer Banks when it s finished. The cost is $5. You will need to bring a light backpack, sack lunch, water bottle, a whistle, some sturdy hiking shoes, and anything else you need for comfort. Dress for the weather. We will meet at the extension office at 8:30 am. Sports Day Friday April 18 th, will be sports day with Haywood County 4-H. We will meet at 8:30 and start off playing disc golf at the Waynesville Rec. Center followed by a great afternoon playing Soccer and Ultimate Frisbee. It will cost $5 and you will need to bring your own sack lunch, water bottle, tennis shoes or cleats to play in, soccer balls or Frisbees, and sunscreen if needed. Dress for the weather. You will also need a disc golf disc which costs $9 at the recreation center. It will be worth it. Call the Extension Office to volunteer or sign up

3 Adopt-a-Tree Come learn about trees and plant one with 4-H on April 19 th between 10 am and 1 pm. Fruit and deciduous trees will be given to everyone who comes. The cost is $5. Community Garden There is still space in the new community garden that has great bottomland soil and is less than a minute from exit 33 off of I-40. Thanks to the generous donation of the land from Carl Deking and Shannon Hunter who are excited to see the community come together and grow together. A big garden space is free to any 4-her and their family. Call the extension office to get growing WHEP Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program is what it stands for and fun is what you will have if you love learning about wildlife and competition. Come out to Haywood Community College on April 7 th, to study some real wildlife specimens and get ready for our FRIENDLY competition against other counties on Saturday May 3 rd. Then go on a cool hike in the mountains to see what you ve learned about. Call the extension office at for more information. DISTRICT ACTIVITY DAY District Activity Day (DAD) will be held on Thursday, June 26 th in Transylvania County. Youth ages 9 or older who would like to participate or to attend, please call the 4-H Office at before Monday, June 23 rd. Please make sure to bring money or lunch with you. Youth who present at district activity day will get scholarship money to go to state congress! In order to present at District Activity Day you must first participate in a county presentation at the next County Council Meeting on May 5 th at 6:00 pm. Call the extension office and we ll help get you started.

4 NC 4-H Citizenship Focus Interested in politics? Do you like to debate issues? Does learning about, and meeting some state government officials sound exciting? Have you ever attended the Civics Club or been on a debate team? If you answered "YES" to any of these questions and are between the ages of 14-19, you should consider attending the 4th Annual NC 4-H Citizenship Focus being held in Raleigh, NC from June We are looking for at least two 4-Her's and/or appropriate adults to represent Haywood County at the conference. For more information on the 3-day event as well registration details please contact the office at Registration needs to be received in Raleigh by May 1st, so let s get you registered. It s Electric...Congress! Attend Electric Congress in Asheville July 14 th through July 16 th and learn all about the world of electricity from production to delivery. We have electric kits to help you learn and get prepared. Call the Extension office at if you are interested. YOU MUST REGISTER BY APRIL 15 th TO GO SO CALL SOON! STATE 4-H CONGRESS State congress is just around the corner so put the week of July 21 st through 25 th on your calendar so you don t forget. The last day to register is July 3 rd. This is a great way to get to know the state 4H community and have a blast doing so. Youth who do a presentation at state will be given generous financial support. The cost is over $200 but call the extension office for more details. There are opportunities for financial scholarships. WHO CAN ATTEND CONGRESS? Any boy or girl 13 years of age or older as of January 1 who is participating in the 4-H program is eligible to attend NC 4-H Congress and certain talent participants who are invited to appear on the Congress program may attend regardless of age. COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING It is time to get the new County Council ready for a busy and exciting year under our new agent. We will meet May 5 th at 6:00 pm at the extension office to discuss the plans for the

5 rest of the year and the roles each officer will play in making it a success. We will also be conducting and critiquing county presentations in preparation for District Activity Day. CAMP SWANNANOA LIVES ON Camp Swannanoa is back and better than ever. With a new director, staff, and philosophy this camp is ready to be filled with campers having fun with swimming, archery, team building games, hiking, campfires, dances, and all kinds of camp essentials. We will be going as a group the week of July 6 th -12 th so, mark your calendars and register early because spots are limited. The price is $375 for ages 8-12 with opportunities for financial scholarships. There are other camps you can attend at Swannanoa including Trekking comp for the ultra outdoor kids, Cloverbud camp for the young ones, and Forestry camp for the wildlife fans. Camp Swannanoa needs some help getting whipped back into shape before summer so Haywood County is going to help the states oldest 4-H camp get ready for summer camp. Financial Scholarships will be awarded for those who come and help out. The clean up days are April 13 th, 19 th, 26 th, and May 4 th. Call the Extension office if you want to help. This is a great way to help reduce the cost of camp! SUMMER DAY CAMP We will be having our annual Summer Day Camp on Monday, August 4 th - Wednesday, August 6 th. This year s theme will be focused on Traditional Crafts, Outdoor Adventure and Environmental Education. This is open to any youth between the ages of Space is limited; please call the Extension 4-H Office at before Monday, July 25 th to sign up. Club Announcements CloverBuds - This new club is looking for new members between the ages 5-9 who want to have fun, meet new friends their age, learn about citizenship, grow plants, and learn about the natural world we live in. The next meeting will be April 24 th they will be tye dying shirts. Call Dan at the extension office to sign up or to get more information Fishing Club, Adventure Club, and After school Sports Club - If you are interested in joining one of these new clubs please try and make it to our spring break programs but, you can still be in the club if you can t make those programs. Just call the extension office at to get signed up.

6 Club Announcements, continued.. WNC All-Stars Dairy Club - This great club is going to the Dairy Quiz Bowl April 12 th in Statesville. They re having breakfast sale fundraiser at the Farmer s Co-op on June 14 th from 8-12, and they re hosting the National Jersey Sale on June 28 th at the Haywood County Fairgrounds. If you want to join this active club call the extension office at The Sew Cool Club Restarting - Our gracious leader, Cris Ammons, has agreed to restart the sewing club for a limited number of kids so if you are in middle or high school and you want to learn how to sew or get better at sewing call and sign up; but call soon because she only has room for 6 kids in the club. Call the office for more details. A NEW BUT FAMILIAR FACE IN 4-H I would like to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Nick Reynolds and I am the new 4-H Agent for Haywood County. I am a graduate of Tuscola and a proud resident of Haywood County. My wife, Trista, and I live out near the old Fines Creek School. I have a degree from UNC-Wilmington in Conservation Biology and was a teacher at a small private school in Black Mountain prior to joining on with the Cooperative Extension. I am honored and excited to become a part of a great community of 4-Her s and I am ready to jump right in. I have already met a number of Leaders, Volunteers and Members, and look forward to meeting everyone who has made, and will continue to make, Haywood County 4-H the best it can be. We could not do it without YOU! I have a number of ideas for the future and would like to hear all of yours. Please call the office, or better yet come by and say Hey, so I can put a face with a name as I meet each one of you. In the next couple of months, it is my goal to attend the various club meetings and activities that we have coming up so I can see what each program does. Look forward to the new and improved newsletter we hope to have out in the next couple of months as well as exciting clubs and activities. I value each of you and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns and/or new ideas for both classes and clubs. Keep an eye out and an ear open for buzz about a pottery class, soon. My wife is a full-time potter here in the county and is also excited to volunteer with 4-H. Thank you for all you do for 4-H and if I haven t already, I look forward to meeting you soon!
