2 LEAD 2014 KEYNOTE / WORKSHOPS 9:30a 10:45a KEYNOTE Ancient Future Church As the church faces challenges and opportunities in this 21st century, leaders are agreeing that the 21st century church has more in common with the first century church than the 20th century church. This is causing us to look at the early church with new eyes. In this keynote conversation, we will explore key characteristics of the ancient church and see how these practices are shaping the future church. SESSION A A1 Christian Marriage in the PC(USA) Rev. Chris Joiner The workshop will offer a discussion of the theology and practice of marriage in the Presbyterian Church (USA), interacting with materials produced by the Theology and Worship Office of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Our goal will be to both engage in the discussion together and discuss ways to broaden the discussion into our congregations. Participants will depart with the tools needed to lead healthy conversations on marriage in their local churches. (A) CHRIS JOINER is a Teaching Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Franklin. A2 Leadership Skills 101 Therese Howell Come and learn about leading meetings, being a good committee member (a form of leadership!), basic parliamentary procedure (the seven motions you need to know), and communications (minutes, meeting notices, and actions after the meeting). Lots of information will be provided, whether you are a new elder, or a seasoned professional! (S) THERESE HOWELL is the Stated Clerk for the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee. A3 Care and Feeding of Volunteers Kim Joiner Do you ever feel you are begging people to volunteer? Are you asking people that are already stressed to the max? Expensive trinkets are not the incentive you need to keep your volunteers engaged and feeling appreciated. Come and find ways that will help you recruit and appreciate your volunteers without busting your budget. (A) KIM JOINER is the Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church, Franklin. A4 Laughter, Learning and Letting God into our Lives Sophie Maness Join us for a great time of play and laughter together. All of our activities will be usable in a variety of church settings, Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, committee meetings, and will require little to no equipment. Following our activities will be time for discussion about the value and place for humor and play in the faith community. (C,Y) SOPHIE MANESS is the Director of Christian Education at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Nashville. A5 A Common Sense Solution to Hunger in the U.S. Linda Tozer Each year billions of pounds of food go to waste in this country and millions of Americans are at risk of going hungry. Society of St. Andrew uses a common sense approach to moving food at risk of going to waste to people at risk of going hungry. Learn how you can become involved in this grassroots solution. 3 LEAD 2014 WORKSHOPS 11:00a 12:15p SESSION B B1 The Future of Christian Education Most agree that Christian education is important -- that we want to teach and nurture a vibrant faith in Jesus Christ in our children, youth, and adults. But more and more, Christian education leaders are facing a myriad of obstacles and hurdles. The old models of Christian education no longer seem sustainable. In this workshop, we will explore the challenges and obstacles and emerging practices that are leading and transforming the church's educational ministry. (A) B2 Parenting on Point (part 1) Jim Williams At LEAD 2013, Jim talked about family mission statements and the critical items necessary to raise a child of character, who is responsible, accountable, dependable with God in the center of the child s life. In 2014, Jim will explain why the nurturing curve is upside down. In our society as the child gets older, parents, teachers and other adults nurture less. This workshop will cover some of the key ways we can nurture our child more as they pass through the key years of character development. This nurturing process represents the fertilizer that will keep the child s root system healthy. (C,Y,P) JIM WILLIAMS is an author, speaker and workshop leader whose topics include parenting, leadership and bullying. Jim lives in Brentwood. B3 Embracing Sabbath Janet Salyer To embrace Sabbath is to turn aside from the message of our dominant culture which suggests that there are no boundaries to our capacity for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. In truth, we are finite beings; and without renewal, we become empty, exhausted, resentful, and depleted. Observing the Sabbath creates space for God to fill us, feed us, heal us, strengthen us, and renew us. Join us for a time of reflection on Sabbath-keeping as a means of grace for individuals and for the Church of Jesus Christ. (A) Janet Salyer is a licensed professional counselor, spiritual director, and Teaching Elder, and attends Westminster Presbyterian Church, Nashville. B4 Seeing 2020: Visioning for a Vibrant and Valued Mission Rev. Warner Durnell Where there is no vision, the people perish. [Proverbs 29:18a KJV] In the absence of a clear vision or compelling revelation, people are apt to wander aimlessly, without direction and purpose. This workshop will invite participants to engage in the vital task of vision casting for any successful mission endeavor, especially for a local congregation or presbytery. The question, What might become the vision for the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee for the foreseeable future? will be considered. Come and share in pondering what God may be calling us to be and do! (S) Warner Durnell is the Executive Presbyter for the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee. B5 Creating a Culture of Generosity Robert Hay, Jr. Is your congregation s approach to stewardship stuck in a rut? Are you living in a state of scarcity and longing for abundance? You will walk away from this workshop with ideas on organizing your generosity/stewardship leadership group, communicating with the different generations that exist in your congregation, integrating all aspects of your church into the life of generosity, and teaching the spirituality of generosity. (S) ROBERT HAY, JR. is a Ruling Elder and the Ministry Relations Officer from the Presbyterian Foundation serving Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico. 3

4 LEAD 2014 WORKSHOPS 1:15p 2:30p SESSION C C1 Absent in the Pews - Ministry with Young Adults The recent Pew Forum on Religion and the Public Life identified today's young adults (persons in their 20s and 30s) as the least churched generation in our history. Many of these young adults grew up in our churches and report that they had a positive experience as children and youth. So why are they not staying with us as young adults? Will they come back when they get married and have children? In this workshop conversation, we will explore who these young adults are, what they are seeking, and what congregations are doing now to call this most elusive of generations to be active participants in Christ's church. (A) C2 Parenting on Point (part 2, see description under Session B) Jim Williams C3 Loving Your Church s Space Krista Lovell Are you having a Goldilocks moment? Stuck in rooms that are "too big" or "too small" while wishing for educational space that is "just right?" Come join us for a time of creative brainstorming, out of-the-box thinking and make-it-work moments designed to help you love the space you're in! (A) Krista Lovell is a Certified Christian Educator from Huntsville, Alabama who has spent the past 35 years designing educational programs and spaces for churches large and small. C4 Creating Intergenerational Events Suzie Lane Want to gather all ages together for an event that is fun, nurturing, and inspirational for everyone? In this workshop, we will explore all the steps in creating effective intergenerational gatherings, and share ways to put these steps into practice in a variety of settings, like an Advent workshop, Vacation Bible School, retreat, and mission projects. (A) Suzie Lane is an Advisor for GenOn Ministries and is a Teaching Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Nashville. C5 We're Stewards, Too! Sandra Shepherd Stewardship Development of Children and Youth Children and youth are stewards of God's gifts, too, so let's help them become loving, faithful, and generous stewards. Workshop participants will explore creative techniques, practices, resources, and theology supporting creative development of young stewards. (C,Y) Sandra is an ordained minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church serving at-large in consulting, preaching, writing, and developing disciples in any way she can. C6 Growing an Endowment Robert Hay, Jr. Does your church have an Endowment? Is your Endowment growing? In this workshop you will learn some ways to start an Endowment program or to continue to grow your Endowment through gifts and investments. Topics will include gift acceptance policies, investment policies, spending formulas, and approaches to growing the principal through new gifts including bequests and planned giving.
