1 HORTICULTURE WOODWORKING ISU EXTENSION AND OUTREACH BUENA VISTA COUNTY 4-H Maker s Day March 2017 What is a Maker? Someone who learns by making, tinkering, or engineering through direct experience with an assortment of high and lowtech materials. Our 4-H Maker Space had 4 defined sections: Horticulture, Sewing, Repurposing and Woodworking. 4-Hers were encouraged to use materials and tools from multiple areas to MAKE a unique project. Here is an example: a 4-Her constructed a shelf in the woodworking area, they then selected plants from the horticulture section and used twine and tin cans from the repurposing area to dangle plant hangers from the shelf. Both volunteers and participants enjoyed the creativity, freedom and flow of the Maker s Day Workshop! And MAKE they did! The results of our Maker s Day included 30 participants, 10 volunteers, 51 woodworking project, 46 sewing projects, 60 repurposing projects and 63 horticulture projects! FOOD SAFETY QUALITY ASSURANCE Why is it Important? In today's world, food safety is one of animal producers' biggest responsibilities. With over 15,000 Iowa 4-H'ers enrolled in livestock projects, about 17 million pounds of meat is produced each year. The new Veterinarian Feed Directive rules will also be included in this year s training. Who needs to complete FSQA Training? All 4-H Youth who plan to exhibit special livestock, swine, beef, sheep, dairy cattle, rabbits, poultry, dairy goats or meat goats at any fair. (FSQA Certification is not required for horse & dogs because these species do not enter the food industry) Does Age of the 4-H er make a difference in FSQA Certification? Grades 4-6: Grades 7-9: MUST ATTEND FSQA WORKSHOP MAY ATTEND WORKSHOP OR TAKE THE INTERMEDIATE FSQA TEST Grades 10-12: MAY ATTEND WORKSHOP OR TAKE THE SENIOR FSQA TEST Call Extension Office at to schedule TEST Time FSQA Future Changes: The FSQA Curriculum will be replaced with an online training curriculum called Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). This transition will happen in the upcoming year Each 4-Her showing market livestock must complete the YQCA annually. POULTRY ORDERS COMING SOON! 3 4-H ENDOWMENT FUNDRAISER SCHOLARSHIPS: ATTENSION SENIORS! The Buena Vista County 4-H Endowment will be awarding a minimum of two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors who are/have been Buena Vista County 4-H'ers. For a senior student to be eligible they must have been a 4-H member for at least 5 years with at least 2 years as a senior member. Click the link below for more information and an application.
