1 The Madison Messenger Newsletter for the Parents and Students of James Madison Elementary School 2302 David Avenue Sheboygan, WI (920) January 2018 Madison Families, I hope all of our families had a Happy Holiday season and want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I would like to thank all of our family members that were able to come to Madison over the month of December to attend one of our events. Your support is important to the success of our students. During the month of January our classroom teachers will be assessing all of the students on their mid-year screeners. The 3 rd -5 th grade students will be taking the STAR 360. the screeners will show the students growth in reading and math since the beginning of the school year. The screener will also assist in helping us make decisions if a student is in need of additional supports. To assist you in understanding our school and district response to intervention I have linked the Wisconsin RiI Center website for you. This site can provide you with background information of the RiI, Response to Intervention. RtI Parents and Family The new James Madison Computer Technology Club will begin Friday, February 2. Our club will meet most Fridays through March The launch of this exciting new student opportunity stems from our interest in providing students with a taste of coding and related computer technology skills -- the same kind of skills that will be in high demand in the job market of the future. The club also aligns with Sheboygan Area School District s Academic & Career Planning (ACP) goals. The club, as well as ACP, is a student-driven, processcentered opportunity for your child to explore coding and technology skills. Students in grades 3-5 are welcome to sign up. If interested, please complete and return the attached registration form. In order to make morning transportation easier for families, those students in grades 3-5 that have siblings in grades K-2 are welcome to have their younger siblings attend the Computer Technology Club with them. Please add their names to the registration form. Your conference time will be consistent to each families fall conference time. We will be utilizing Skyward to schedule conferences. You will be able to change your conference time through your family account. More information will be provided to families in the near future. It is hard to believe that the school year is nearly half over. The students are doing an excellent job and working hard every day. Student Council appreciates your support! Our Box Top classroom competition ended on December 15 th! We collected $550 in boxtops and bonus coupons. The winners of the competition are: 1 st place Mrs. Schlueter s classroom ($50) and 2 nd place Mrs. Urben s classroom ($25). Congratulations to both classrooms and thank you to all those who participated in the contest. Our Movie Night will be held on January 18 th from 5:30 7:00 in the gym. Please bring your chairs and blankets to watch the movie Gnomeo and Juliet with your family and friends. Our next meeting will be January 22 nd from 4:00 5:00 p.m. in the IMC. Childcare is available if requested. We are looking for substitute noon-hour supervisors. 3 PBIS at Madison James Madison Elementary School utilizes the Positive Behavior and Interventions Support framework to maximize academic success and provide a safe learning environment for all students. Our Eagle Expectations encourage students to: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. PBIS Building Goal: Our PBIS Team set the following goal this year: During the school year students will engage in safe, respectful, and responsible behavior to maintain 94% of students with 1 or less major office discipline referrals in all types of major problem behaviors. We are proud of the positive choices James Madison students are making this year. So far, 97.2% of students have 0 or 1 major office discipline referrals. Acknowledgements: Staff members acknowledge students following expectations with Eagle Tickets. Eagle Tickets are turned in weekly for a chance to win a prize or may be saved for our Ticket Trade Days. During January 18th lunches, students may turn in 1 Eagle Ticket for a cup of hot chocolate. Assembly Changes: Our January assembly will be held on January 11th. All other assemblies are held on the 1st Thursday of each month at 3:00. Our all school assemblies are a time to celebrate positive behaviors, build community and teamwork and have fun. Students will see some fun changes at our next assembly including a Minute to Win It competition demonstrated by our staff. Beginning in February, students acknowledged with a PBIS Star Student award will have the opportunity to compete or choose a friend to compete in Minute to Win It. The winning classrooms in each grade will earn a fun class prize. Family awards will be announced during Friday afternoon announcements. Parents and family members are welcome to join us for our monthly assemblies. All School Celebration: We will celebrate 2nd quarter Positive Behaviors on January 25th. Students will have an opportunity to swim or use technology. More info to come in Friday Folders! Office Discipline Referrals: When Eagle Expectations result in falling short in behavior, an office discipline referral (ODR) form identifies the behavior, setting and consequence. Please refer to our Parent and Student Handbook for a list of possible consequences. ODRs may be written for a Minor or Major rule infraction. The staff member who saw the behavior manages Minor ODR s. Mr. Ledermann manages Major ODR s. A copy of the ODR will be sent home with the student. Please review the ODR together, sign it, and ask your child to return it to his or her teacher (minors) or Mr. Ledermann (majors) on the following school day. 4 Student Council rd th All 3 5 grade students are invited to be members of the Student Council. If your child is still interested in joining, please have them see Mrs. Kindred or Mrs. Ringwell. Students must have a parent permission form turned in in order to attend after school meetings. st Meetings: Officers and Class Representatives will meet on the 1 Thursday of each month from 3:45-4:30 in Room 110. The next rd Officer/Rep meeting will be Thursday, January 4th. The full Student Council will meet on the 3 Thursday of each month from 3:454:30 in Room 110. The next Full Council meeting will be Thursday, January 18th. If your child is a member please arrange for transportation in the front of the school at 4:30pm. Lunchroom and Hallway Helpers: Our members are doing a great job helping out during the Kindergarten and 1st grade lunch hour and after school in the hallways acknowledging students making positive choices. Parents: please be aware if students sign up to be a Hallway Helper, they will be scheduled for a week and will be about 10 minutes late leaving school each day. The schedule is posted outside the guidance room. The School Store: School Store will be open on Tuesdays after school until 4:00. Snacks, school supplies and small toys are available for purchase. Prices range from $.50-$1.00. We ask that students have no more than $2.00 with them at school to spend at the School Store. Student council members who work at the school store sign up at our meetings. School store workers are finished at 4:00 on Tuesdays. Candy Cane Gram Sale: The Student Council held its annual Candy Cane Gram sale in December. Thank you to everyone who purchased Candy Cane Grams. We were able to make a $315 donation to Children s Hospital. Thank you to all the families who donated baked goods for our Student Council Bake Sale at the Holiday Concert. We raised $177 which will be used for Student Council activities. Student Council prepares candy cane grams for delivery! We want to Stay Connected with you! 7 James Madison Elementary School Computer Technology Club Code of Conduct Contract School Year Please initial that you have read and understand each item listed below. Then sign and date the agreement. 1. Members must follow school rules, classroom expectations and maintain good citizenship. 2. Members must show respect to all adults, and other students, by using school appropriate words and actions. 3. Members must accept responsibility for completing school work and maintain passing grades. (Stay up to date-no missing assignments.) 4. Members must maintain good attendance. (Have few absences and/or tardies.) 5. Members must work together with others to get the job done. 6. Members must resolve conflict in appropriate ways. 7. Members must practice respectful, responsible and safe digital citizenship. Devices will only be used for coding. 8. Members must use only school appropriate, instructor approved sites.
