The primary goal of our conference night is to assist those parents with students who have a C- or below to meet with their child s teachers. The intent of this night is to help struggling students to find success before the end of the first trimester. Please know if you were unable to get a time slot you may always a teacher directly or contact your child s guidance counselor and he/she can speak with you about other available options. There are multiple avenues available to communicate with your child s teacher(s). HALLOWEEN Candy First, I wish everyone a HAPPY and SAFE HALLOWEEN! This time of year leads to an increase of the bite-size candy coming to school and much of it may contain nuts. The following message will be read to students on morning announcements. Masconomet Middle School Newsletter 1
2 Please help protect your classmates who have food allergies by choosing not to bring in Halloween candy with nuts to school. Please note that if you do bring in a food item containing peanuts or tree nuts, it may only be consumed in the café or an approved location. Please do not share food with others and always wash your hands after eating. Thank you for caring! Fall Fundraiser Mark your calendar! Fall fundraiser items will be available for pick-up on Wednesday, November 9th. Students can pick up the items but if their order is too big, parents can pick the items up from 12:30 3:00 p.m. Life is Good Community Read As you are aware, the Tri-Town community embarked on a community read, including K-12 students and staff, parents, libraries, town organizations and community members. Together we are reading the book Life Is Good, which is the book written by the Jacobs brothers, founders of Life is Good. Their message underscores while life is not perfect or easy, it is good! Teachers have copies and many are integrating positive messages into their lesson and team activities. The first Friday of each month is Life Is Good Friday where the superpower for the upcoming month is introduced. For November, gratitude is our focus Superpower as it also connects so well with Thanksgiving! The Jacobs brothers share By elevating our awareness of what s right with the world, instead of focusing on what s wrong, we come to realize that the keys to happiness are all around us. (pg. 117) Masco Excels This is the last week of our Excels program for Session 1. Any make-ups will begin next week. Please have your child check with the teacher that is running the program for the scheduled make-up sessions. It is important that students are picked up at 4:00 p.m. A staff member will wait until students participating in Excels are picked up or a note is sent in allowing the student to walk or ride their bikes home. As such, any student that is repeatedly not picked up by 4:15 p.m. may not be able to continue to participate in their activity. Private School Applications If your child is interested in applying for Private School, please have them see their guidance counselor for a private school packet. This packet will include a Student Activities form for your child to fill out, which is helpful for the guidance counselor when filling out the recommendation. Even if the application states a recommendation is needed from the principal, your child should work through his/her guidance counselor. There is also a checklist included of what forms the student will need to bring in for their guidance counselor and teachers. PLEASE NOTE our important deadlines for submitting applications: Private School Deadline Deadline to submit forms to Guidance Counselor/Teacher December November 16 January December 14 Masconomet Middle School Newsletter 2

4 A big thank you goes out to the staff and students who participated in our 10 th annual Halloween Open Mic. On Thursday afternoon, we had some very talented students who shared their own poetry, used dramatic pauses and voice fluctuation to draw in the audience while telling short stories and some interesting improv jokes. The audience was also very supportive of the performers.
