Forster s trial began Monday in Antlers due to a change-of-venue request that was granted earlier this year because of the publicity on the case. A jury was seated by lunchtime Monday, according to the Bryan County District Attorney s Office, and both sides presented opening statements. Several people also testified, and the trial resumed today. Forster and Taylor were charged following an investigation into the fire that authorities ruled was caused by arson. According to a probable-cause affidavit by Bryan County Sheriff s Investigator John Bates, Brandon Perkinson, 19, Tishomingo, said they all went to the fort to search for ghosts. Authorities said the fire started after a roll of toilet paper in a storage room was set on fire. Upon questioning, Forster, the affidavit states, said that Taylor set a roll of toilet paper on fire and that it burned for approximately one minute before they put it out by stomping on it. Perkinson was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering a dwelling without permission. Taylor s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 15. 3 TUESDAY,JUNE 21, 2011 Lifestyles THE DURANT DAILY DEMOCRAT 3 Dear Annie: I have been in a relationship with Derek for two years. I love him dearly and know we will marry someday. The problem is, my sister and her husband will not accept Derek because we started dating when he was still going through a divorce. Annie, I know we should have waited until the divorce was final, but my sister can t seem to move past it. She refuses to meet Derek and has told me that neither she nor her husband will come to our wedding. My sister has made mistakes in her marriage, and I was always very accepting and forgiving. Leaving Derek is not an option, but I hate that I don t see my nieces anymore because of this tiff. How can I convince her Derek is a good guy if she won t make an effort to meet him? -- Miss My Sis Dear Miss: All choices have consequences, and it helps to be prepared to deal with them. Yes, your sister seems unforgiving and harsh, but you cannot fix that. She also may believe that her intransigent position will force you to give Derek up. If you plan to stay with this man, you should conduct your lives with dignity and integrity and hope that your sister will someday accept the two of you as a couple. Dear Annie: I have a friend who has the call waiting feature on his phone. If I am talking to him and a second call comes in, he will say, Oh, I have another call, and either hang up on me, or leave me waiting interminably while he chats with the second caller. Once he kept me holding so long, I finally hung up. However, if I am the second caller, he will say, I m on the other line. Can I call you back? This seems to indicate that other callers are always more important to him than I am. Unless it is a dire emergency, I feel the first call should take priority. I also think his treatment of me is disrespectful. My friend also has Caller ID, so he knows who the second call is from and doesn t need to answer it unless he believes it s urgent. Is there an etiquette rule for this? Am I wrong to feel rudely treated? -- Unimportant Caller Dear Caller: Etiquette says the person with YOU ARE INVITED Annie s Mailbox By Kathy Mitchell & Marcy Sugar whom you are already on the phone takes precedence over an incoming call. Your friend should put you on hold just long enough to inform the second caller that he will call back. However, if your conversation has already gone on for quite a while, it makes sense for you to say, Go ahead and get that. I ll talk to you later. Courtesy works both ways. Dear Annie: I read the letter from Scared Sister, who is worried about her younger sister s night vision and her ability to drive. The sister, Louise, is a fulltime operating-room nurse who is required to rotate being on call at night. You recommended she speak to her supervisor along with several other alternatives. Here s one more: Louise may be able to apply for a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. She should speak to her HR department or contact the Americans with Disabilities website to start the process. This is federal law, and if Louise has a legitimate disability, her employer needs to make a reasonable accommodation for her. If they simply took her off the night shift, the employer would not have to bear any financial burden. -- Ron in Connecticut Dear Ron: Several readers suggested that Louise find out if she is eligible for accommodation through the Americans with Disabilities Act. For more information, readers can contact the ADA information line at or check their website at Our thanks to all who wrote. 4 Durant Daily Democrat OPINION THE DURANT DAILY DEMOCRAT TUESDAY, JUNE 21, 2011 John Boehner Rolls the Obama White House How important is Ohio in deciding who wins U.S. presidential elections? Critically important! Consider this: No Republican presidential nominee - not one - who has not carried Ohio has ever been elected to the White House. In the last 17 presidential contests, John F. Kennedy in 1960 remains the only Democrat who has won the White House while losing Ohio. That Ohio will once again be a major battleground state in the 2012 presidential race is understood by both parties. Last November, Ohio Republicans won a smashing landslide - unseating Democrats from the governorship and four other statewide offices, from five U.S. House seats and from control of the lower house of Ohio state legislature, while sending a son of the Buckeye State, John Boehner, to be the Republican speaker of the U.S. House. That s the same Speaker John Boehner whom President Barack Obama invited to play golf with him and Vice President Joe Biden. Given the opening by a politically tone-deaf White House, Boehner then shrewdly invited first-year Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich to round out the famous foursome. Kasich, for those who do not regularly follow Ohio politics, has, according to a recent survey of the state s voters by Public Policy Polling, a positive job-approval rating of 33 percent positive, while 56 percent of Kasich s constituents award him a negative job rating. These numbers tie him with Florida freshman Republican Gov. Rick Scott for, what the pollsters term, the most reviled governor in the country. Last November, John Kasich won by defeating the Democratic governor, Ted Strickland. If voters were deciding between the same two men today, according to the poll, Strickland would trounce Kasich 59 percent to 34 percent. Beech nation s 50 governors whom Barack Obama has ever invited to play a round of golf. Imagine you are the spouse of a police officer or a special education teacher who is facing - without recourse - loss of salary or benefits under Kasich s collective bargaining law and who is ready to volunteer in the campaign for the referendum vote. Instead of an insensitive chief executive who favors the Have-a-Lot s over the Have-Nots, Kasich turns out to be a golfing buddy of the Democratic president of the United States. Oh, the White House insists, this was not the president s invitation, this was Speaker Boehner s choice - which proves only that Boehner has thought more strategically and understands more clearly the central significance of Ohio in determining the presidential winner in To find out more about Mark Shields and read his past columns, visit the Creators Syndicate web the Republican governor s unpopularity is Kasich s successful championing of a new state law, SB 5, which severely limits collective bargaining rights for some 350,000 Ohio teachers, police officers and other public employees. When asked whether that new state law should be kept or repealed in the proposed referendum vote, to be held this fall, by a 54 percent to 36 percent margin Ohioans - including lopsided majorities of independent voters and white, bornagain evangelical voters - favored repeal. Democrats by more than five to one endorse repeal of the Kasich-backed law to curtail public employees rights. In short, John Kasich has in six short months managed to reunite and re-energize demoralized Ohio Democrats by stripping Ohio working families of their traditional right to bargain for the conditions under which they work. So what does the page Obama White House do? It elevates Republican DISTRIBUTED Gov. The seven-term congressman announced Thursday that he is resigning his congressional seat 10 days after admitting that he sexted at least a halfdozen women from his Twitter account and almost three weeks after the scandal broke. But what have we actually learned from this weird spectacle that has dominated the front pages of the country s leading newspapers and aired round-the-clock on cable news? People were fascinated by the Weiner story because his behavior was so reckless. How could a member of Congress think he could get away with sending lewd pictures to total strangers and not be caught? It says something about the hubris of politicians. But it also says something more about our culture. There is something uniquely narcissistic in sending naked pictures of one s self out into cyberspace. It s the modernday equivalent of flashing. And like exhibitionists who flash their nakedness at unsuspecting bystanders, sexters seem both creepy and pathetic. Yet the phenomenon appears to be widespread. Several similar scandals involving teens have become national news in the last couple of years. At least one led to a suicide, but others have also ruined lives. And Weiner isn t even the first highprofile sexter. Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre also sent naked pictures out that embarrassed him and his family. It s hard to imagine that many of those involved in sexting would display naked body parts face to face with casual acquaintances or strangers. But the virtual world of the Internet loosens inhibitions and encourages behavior that in real life most people would know is out of bounds. In a society in which many people don t even know their next-door neighbor s name, millions create friendships with total strangers online. And many of those friendships turn into something more - virtual sexual relationships. Chat rooms and other online temptations lure many into cyber relationships that can become Conservative: as obsessive and destructive as the real kind. The benefits of the Internet are indisputable. We now have instant access to information and knowledge that would DAN BALLEW, camera-press supervisor ddpress@heartlandpublications.com KARL OAKLEY, advertising manager koakley@heartlandpublications.com have been beyond reach just a few years ago. We can communicate quickly and to more people than ever before. But the downsides are also great. Some of the information we get is wrong. It s easier to spread lies to a much wider audience than ever before. And, much of the communication that goes on communicates very little of worth. Do we really need to know what our virtual friends ate for dinner last night, much less what they re doing or wearing (or aren t) right now? Internet communication feeds the narcissism that characterizes modern society. In the past, narcissism was recognized as a vice; today, we celebrate its virtues. Anyone with Internet access has the ability to create a world that centers on himself. Individuals with little to say create blogs on which they ramble at length about everything that happens in their own little world - or the world at large - unfiltered. I realize that in part it s a generational difference. I registered for a Twitter account awhile back but quickly realized that I had no great desire to share my opinions on everything instantly. And the idea that anyone - even my children - would want to know where I was, what I was doing, and what happened to be on my mind a dozen or more times a day seems downright delusional. In his resignation statement, Weiner said he wanted to continue to serve his constituents but that the distraction (he) created has made that impossible. He s right, of course, but he s not the only one distracting attention from what s important. Maybe the biggest lesson we can learn from the Weiner affair is to think before we tweet. Of course, there s a difference between sending dirty pictures across the Internet and tweeting inane comments every few minutes, but both are a form of exhibitionism we d be a whole lot better off without. Police detail attack on Bronco player BY MIKE HOUSEHOLDER ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT (AP) Denver Broncos defensive player Jason Hunter was struck in the left upper chest by a kitchen knife hurled at him by his girlfriend during an argument over cell phones, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. Hunter told police the woman waved the knife and told him to stay back before throwing it on accident during the morning of April 27, according to the six-page report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. She then took her boyfriend to receive medical treatment and later was arrested after being pointed out by hospital security, the report said. The officers who wrote the report said the girlfriend was angry about having found a bag of cell phones, which Hunter claimed were not his and belonged to his boy. Detroit police have said only that Hunter had been stabbed and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Hunter s agent, Robert Walker, said afterward that the player required several stitches. On Monday, Walker said the five-year pro is well. The team declined to discuss specifics of the case. Our physicians have been in contact with the physicians who are treating him, but out of respect for his privacy we don t want to elaborate, Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said Monday. Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County prosecutor s office, said charges have not been brought against the girlfriend. However, she said prosecutors are currently studying evidence and deciding whether to bring charges against a female suspect she would not identify. Hunter, 27, was injured only days after police in Florida said Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall, a former Broncos player, was stabbed with a kitchen knife by his wife, who said she was acting in selfdefense. He said all of those arrested Friday can anticipate some prison time. They will go to prison. They ve been doing it for some time, he said. Elouise Cobell of Browning, Mont., claimed in the 15-year-old suit that for more than a century, U.S. officials systematically stole or squandered billions in royalties intended for American Indians in exchange for oil, gas, grazing and other leases. U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan, in approving the settlement after a daylong hearing, said the legitimacy of Cobell's claims could not be questioned. "The government mismanaged these resources on a staggering scale," Hogan said. The settlement does not make up for the losses Indian tribes suffered for more than a century, Hogan added, but "at least it provides some certainty" to hundreds of thousands of individual Indians who will now receive payments of least $1,000 each from the government. Many will receive substantially more money. Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, will receive $2 million, and three other named plaintiffs will receive payments ranging from $150,000 to $200,000 each. "The process has gone on long enough," Hogan said, noting that hundreds of potential beneficiaries have died in the 15 years the case has wound through the courts and Congress. The government and lawyers representing Cobell settled the lawsuit in December 2009 after years of court battles and appeals. Congress approved the settlement at the end of last year, and President Barack Obama signed it into law. But the case still needed Hogan's approval, which he provided late Monday after a daylong hearing on the merits of the case and legal fees to be assessed. In a statement, Obama said the decision "marks another important step forward in the relationship between the federal government and Indian Country." Resolving the dispute was a priority for his administration, Obama said. He promised to engage in "governmentto-government consultations with tribal nations" regarding the land consolidation aspect of the settlement to ensure that it moves quickly and fairly. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the settlement not only resolves the contentious 15-year Man with shotgun robs Oklahoma bank Two arrested in death of 4-year old Cobell litigation, "but also honorably and responsibly turns the page on an unfortunate chapter in the department's history, demonstrating President Obama's commitment to reconciliation and empowerment for American Indian nations." Under the settlement approved Monday, $1.5 billion will go to at least 300,000 Indian account holders. Another $1.9 billion will be used to buy back and consolidate tribal land that has become subdivided and difficult to manage over the years. An additional $60 million will go to a scholarship fund for Indian students.
