Explain why Barack Obama s family background is unusual. Barack Obama s parents came from different races and cultures. His father was an African from Kenya. His mother was a white American from Kansas. They met at the University of Hawaii when they were both students there. When they got married, there were very few marriages between white people and black people. 3. Tell about Barack s relationship with his father, Barack Sr. Barack did not spend much time with his father when he was a young child. His parents separated when he was only two years old. His father went back to Africa. Barack only knew him through letters, pictures, and stories. Barack s father visited him in Hawaii just once when he wa ten years old. He stayed for a month. They spent time together and became friends. 4. Describe the time that Barack s family lived in Indonesia. Barack s family moved to Indonesia when he was six. His mother had married a man from Indonesia named Lolo. They lived outside the capital city. They had lots of animals around. Barack had a baby sister named Maya. His stepdad, Lolo, treated him like a son. 5. Why did Barack s mom send him back to Hawaii to stay with his grandparents? Barack s mom sent him to Hawaii to go to a better school. She did not think the schools in Indonesia were very good.

There are many possible reasons; here are some of them: Barack Obama was a good speaker who connected well with different kinds of people. Voters thought new leaders could help the country solve the serious problems it faced. Many people were also excited about the chance to elect the first African-American President of the United States.
