1 Kendale Elementary March/April 2016 Principal s Message Template Designer: Ryan Horwitz In this issue: Home of the Tigers Sports Page 2 Welcome to the March & April edition of the Kendale Elementary student generated Newsletter. We are now bringing the 3rd nine weeks to a close and will enter the 4th Nine Weeks of the school year. We look to close out this year by performing to the best of our abilities on standardized assessments. The months of March & April has now become the time where we administer the both the SAT & FSA assessments to our students in Grades K-5. This is an exciting time here at Kendale because it gives us a chance to demonstrate what we have learned! Stakeholders, our continued relationship with you combined with your child's eagerness to learn is essential as we strive to continue moving forward making DREAMS come alive at Kendale Elementary! 2 Page 2 Sports: Percy Harvin By: Nick Maqueira Percy Harvin is an American football wide receiver for the buffalo bills of the national football league (NFL). He played college football at Florida when the Gators won the BCS national championship in 2006 and 2008, and was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. Harvin has also played for the Seattle Seahawks and New York jets. As a rookie he was the associated press offensive rookie of the year. He attended and played football for Lawnstawn High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where his team won the Virginia high school state championship in Local News: Florida Has a red Highway Safety Rating By Ryan Horwitz Ever heard of highway safety ratings? If you haven t, then you don t want to. Why? Florida is rated among the worst for highway safety; in fact, Florida has a red rating. And, I have seen something that makes me believe this too. On the way to the Dade schools Science and Art Fair, I saw a car on the side of the road with its engine on fire! Florida doesn t have an effective booster seat law, and not enough people wear seatbelts, causing people to die. But can you believe it? There were 2, 494 road fatalities in 2014! All of this mayhem is happening because Florida lacks basic safety laws. Another effect of this is police coming schools to teach about highway safety. By the way, on your next car ride, remind the driver not to text. Good luck with highway safety and BE SAFE! Talent Show SCHOOL NEWS: By: Tyler Horwitz The winner for the duo group was The Sensational Seven!! The Soloist was Gionna Gonzalez!! The instrument was Valeria Zumaeta!!Viewers choice was The Dancing Athletes!! Jump Rope For Heart There were single ropes, team ropes, and double dutch! At the end, there was a single rope competition for a free rope!! Jump Rope For Heart is a free physical activity fundraising program available to all primary and intermediate schools and ECE services throughout New Zealand. Since 1985 the program has heart healthy bodies. Book Fair There were books, books, and more books! Some of the books were Goosebumps, Star Wars, and The Last Kids On Earth. Spring Carnival The most popular rides were Whip It, Big Baller, Jousting, the Fair Slide, and the Spider Slide. The silent auction baskets were awesome!!for babies there was a bounce house that was themed after a farm. They loved it!

A WORLD NEWS Dangers of the Zika virus By Lucas Boudon This year the Zika virus has caused a very bad health issues in the world. It has spread to more than 30 countries across the world. In Brazil a baby was born without almost any brain tissue. Brazil has made a substance that protects you from mosquitos. It also stays on for six washes but a lot of people can t buy it because it costs a lot of money. If the Zika mosquito bites you when the dangerous amounts of fluid builds up it causes swelling and damage to many different parts of the body. In Coral Gables Florida there are a least ten cases of the Zika virus. In some places they are asking women not to have babies until 2018.

4 Page 4 St. Patrick s Day By: Nick Maqueira & Aydreon Mathilda Around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States of America, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, Saint Patrick s Day was made on official Christian feast day in the early 17th century, This Irish holiday is observed by the Catholic Church, the Angelical Communion, especially the church of Ireland, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Lutheran Church. 6 Page 6 Jump Rope for Heart About the American Heart Association The American Heart Association is the nation s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Founded by six cardiologists in 1924, our organization now includes more than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters. We fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide critical tools and information to save and improve lives. Our nationwide organization includes 156 local offices and more than 3,000 employees. We moved our national headquarters from New York to Dallas in 1975 to be more centrally located. The American Stroke Association was created as a division in 1997 to bring together the organization s stroke-related activities. What They Do: To improve the lives of all Americans, they provide public health education in a variety of ways. They re the nation s leader in CPR education training. They help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. They provide science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals to help them provide quality care to their patients. They educate lawmakers, policymakers and the public as they advocate for changes to protect and improve the health of our communities.
