6 4-H School Highlights Pictures of Mrs. Jackie house beginning her Embryology project with 5th grade students at Colony Elementary. Students candled the duck eggs and set them in the incubator on Tuesday, April, 25, The eggs will be scheduled to hatch 28 days from now. You can follow the class project on North & South Laurel High Schools were given a dose of reality before their prom events this month by participating in a mock accident and trial as part of the extension program Truth & Consequences. The program was sponsored by Laurel County ASAP. It consisted of a real life simulation that involved the student s classmates. The purpose of the mock accident and trial simulation was to allow students to see first-hand the effects from substance abuse or distractions while driving. County volunteers participated in the event and conducted the simulation in the same way they would if it were a real accident and trial. After the event, students realized the truth about alcohol and drug use and the consequences involved when driving under the influence. Sublimity and Cold Hill school clubs made posters this month showing what they have learned this year about 4-H, from the clover, motto, what the four H s stand for, and all the many activities and opportunities that were presented in their club meetings this year.

7 Community Clubs Our 4-H Rabbit Club is up and going and had a great meeting this month. They elected officers, named their club, and already planned a community service event. The Rabbit Club will meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6 pm at the extension office. The Super showmen 4-H Livestock Club met at the Cornett family farm and worked on hog judging. The club will have students entering the state judging contest this year and are working hard preparing. A big thanks goes out to the Cornett family for hosting and Kaitlin Fouts for being willing to work with our livestock judging teams. The team will be working on beef cattle, sheep, and goats over the next few weeks. The livestock club usually meets the last Tuesday of the month at 6pm. The Laurel County 4-H Sharpshooters Club is back in action! They enjoyed their first day on the range a couple of weeks ago and the first opportunity to use the range at Center Target Firearms and Indoor Range. Thanks to our volunteers and local businesses for your time and support of this club! Youth ages 6-8 building and painting bird houses this month. Next month, we will learn to make our own personal pan pizzas. The next meeting will be May 17th at 5:30 p.m. at the Laurel County Extension Office. This club is open to youth ages 6-8 and is free of charge. Members of the SPARK club finished their Bead ART this month and will be making Unicorn Slime next month on May 5:30 p.m. at the Lc Ext. Office. Club is open to youth ages FREE to join.

8 The NRESci Academy is a three-year program designed to teach youth about their natural environment. In the program, scholars participate in hands-on investigations to learn about Kentucky s water, forest and wildlife resources. Each year of the three-year program, scholars concentrate on a different core area (water, forestry, wildlife) and interact with experts in each of these disciplines. Scholars participate in a variety of field exercises, including stream sampling, forest measurement data collection, wildlife survey, insect collection and identification, and much more. Scholars also have the opportunity to visit natural areas throughout the Commonwealth, and learn about the diverse natural resources in our state. Scholars who have graduated from the academy in good standing may apply to be NRESci Teen Ambassador (a one-year commitment). Kentucky 4-H believes that all youth should have opportunities for positive youth development in our four guiding concepts: mastery, belonging, independence, and generosity. This program fosters mastery by increasing environmental literacy, belonging by interacting and connecting with adults and youth with similar interests, independence by practicing leadership skills and independent thinking, and generosity by designing and completing a community service project. Contact your county extension office for more information or go to: scholarship_application2018.pdf Additional Information Applicants must be enrolled as a first, second, or third year scholar or ambassador for the upcoming NRESci Academy program year at the time of application. Applicants must reside in Extension Districts 1 or 2. Applications should be submitted to University of Kentucky NRESci Academy, c/o Ashley Osborne, 212 Scovell Hall, Lexington, KY or ashley.osborne@uky.edu. The application deadline is June 1, 2018 (applications mailed should be postmarked by May 26). Successful applicants will be notified by July 1, Scholarship money will be paid directly to the Kentucky 4-H Foundation for the awarded applicant prior to the first day of the program. These scholarships are available to pay all or a portion of the NRESci fee for youth that would benefit from this educational experience and would not be able to attend the program otherwise. The Timothy Warren Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 to honor the life of Timothy Warren, a graduate of the NRESci Academy and a Academy Ambassador from Breathitt County. Full and partial scholarships are available annually to NRESci scholars that reside in Extension Districts 1 or 2. Applicants must be enrolled as a first, second, or third year scholar or ambassador for the upcoming NRESci Academy program year (starting September 1, 2017) at the time of application. "Timothy was a scientist by nature. His love for animals, reptiles, and amphibians was evident to everyone that knew him. His passion for science could be seen in the many instructables videos that he made describing how to make solar USB chargers, battery USB chargers using altoid tins, RGB lanterns, and breadboard friendly switches. He loved to take things that most people discarded and re-invent them into something valuable. He was very proud to be a member of the NRESci Academy and to be chosen as an Ambassador.
