If you look at the schedule, there is a test for Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) just after our last scheduled meeting for this election year. Our Section Chair, John Law, has set up each meeting to give us all a new part of the body of knowledge for CQA. Beginning with last month s meeting where David Smith, the Director of Quality at Spectra Technologies, started us off, each section meeting is scheduled specifically for each of us to get something back for our membership. Although the meetings are November 2009 set up this way, it is still up to YOU to get the most out of what is provided. Regular attendance to the meetings, accessing the information available on the ASQ website and applying your new skills are all necessary for success. So come to the meetings prepared to learn, and when you are sitting for your CQA exam in June, remember that although the training was provided by the section, it was still YOU that worked to get the knowledge needed to pass it. The October issue, available at is full of helpful articles on auditing. For just a few hours a month, you can be a part of helping Section 1421 continue to thrive. Training Don t let the lack of local training prevent you from expanding your knowledge base. ASQ has several web based self-paced courses that can be taken on your own at your own pace. Simply go to the ASQ website, log in and search the training and certifications pages for online training using the advanced search tool. You may be surprised at what you can find. Page 5 of our newsletter also offers some information on upcoming local courses. Additionally, beginning in October, each monthly section meeting will include auditor certification training.

3 Section 1421 Standing Meeting Agenda Page 3 All regular meetings will be held at the Glory Diner on the 3 rd Tuesday of the month (September through May), unless otherwise communicated. A formal business meeting will precede all regular meetings and will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. All Section Officers, Committee Chairs, Committee Members and other Section Members and Guests are encouraged to attend the business meeting. Generally accepted parliamentary procedure will be followed. 4 Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 4 Quality for Life Program From the Member Leaders section of the ASQ website Quality for Life is an exciting program that celebrates the humanistic accomplishments of quality. While quality is often commonplace in our day-to-day activities, we often take for granted that these skills are used at work, in our personal lives, and often through volunteer efforts to make a difference. Quality for Life centers on recognition, sharing the stories of individuals whose quality skills have made a positive impact on the lives of others. By sharing Quality for Life stories, we applaud ASQ members whose passion and commitment for quality makes the world a better place. If you use quality tools and techniques to improve life whether for one person or hundreds of individuals then it is certainly a Quality for Life story. In the example below, a ramp was built by one of the contributors to this program to make it easier for the owner to get in and out. In addition to your own work, do not forget to examine the work of others and encourage them to participate as well. It is important that we participate in this program because it gives us the opportunity to highlight aspects of quality that sometimes might be overlooked. Featured this quarter: Treasurer and Internet Liaison/ Newsletter Editor Meet our Section Leaders: Gene Morton I joined ASQ and the Shreveport/Bossier City Section 1410 in spring of 1994 and received my CQA certification that same year. I was employed at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant for twelve years as a Senior Industrial Engineer. During that time the industrial engineering profession was getting a bad rap for not caring enough about quality. With the encouragement from the LAP Quality Manager, Bobby Lee, I joined ASQ and studied and passed the CQA exam. While a member of ASQ in Shreveport, I was active in ASQ Section 1410 and held several different offices. In 1997 I moved to Conway Arkansas and was a Manufacturing Engineer for Carrier Refrigeration, manufacturing commercial freezers and refrigerators. I joined the ASQ Central Arkansas Section While a member of that section I held the offices of On-Line Chair, Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman. During my tenure as Chairman, , Section 1407 achieved the ASQ Total Quality Award. In 2002, I moved to Camden and went to work for General Dynamics and am currently the Production Manager of the Hydra 70 program. While a member of the South Arkansas Section 1421, I have held offices of Membership, Secretary Meet our Section Leaders: Rosalyn Cox and currently am the Section Treasure. I continue to utilize my knowledge gained as an active member of ASQ in my daily decision making and look forward to continuing to work with our section in the future. My wife, Barbara, and I will be celebrating our 40 th wedding anniversary the 29 th of November. We have two children, a son and a daughter. Our son lives in Shreveport Louisiana and our daughter, Carrie, lives here in Camden and is working for Lockheed Martin. Rosalyn Cox, Newsletter Editor and Internet Liaison Hello, my name is Roz Cox. I was born on a small 2 acre farm in a town called West Chicago, Illinois. After many years of the good life in a small rural town, I mixed things up a bit, moved to the relatively big city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and became a southerner. After completing my high school years there, ida. After my time running down the East Coast, I transferred back to New Orleans and transitioned from Active Duty to Active Reserve where I spent the last 10 years of my military career. I am now retired, but not before I spent time in Kuwait for Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as some time in Portugal and Puerto Rico. During my time as a reservist, I was also working my way up the civilian side of life and have been working for Lockheed Martin for 8 I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where I spent the next 10 years on active duty at various locations such as New York City; Yorktown, Virginia and Key West, Floryears. I have filled some type of role in Quality Assurance/Mission Success for those 8 years on many different programs. One of which was the Space Shuttle Main Engine program where we tested the main engines for the Space Shuttle. I even got to meet genuine Astronauts! I recently transferred divisions from space to weapons, I guess you could say, and I now live in Camden, Arkansas. I joined the ASQ last year and the rest is history!
